How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

Around 30 years ago aged 21
7k deposit on a 36k mortgage, no help from parents
A two bed flat in a converted Victorian house, no outside space or parking

I worked from age 13 in restaurants and hotels. I was working 20 hours a week when taking my A levels.

52, last year after the divorce as I wasn’t on the mortgage for FMH.
So I’m probably the oldest, but it is a ‘top up’ mortgage as I had equity from FMH. I was able to buy a very modest home, but it is mine and DCs’:)

22 I think. No deposit as it was 100% mortgage.

DramaAlpaca · 24/08/2021 22:27

Age 20, 95% mortgage, 1987 at 10% interest rate. Got to 15% at one point. 🥴

Rapunzel, she left school aged 17 in March 2020 after completing her full 6 years of high school (Scotland). Planned to have a gap year, then pandemic hit. She's been working full-time for NHS since last summer as a health care assistant and saved her 15% deposit from her earnings. She got her keys to her flat this week.

Downtherefordancing · 25/08/2021 00:13

I was 22. It was back in 1986 and it was a 2 bed semi - £22k

  1. My 20s were tough for me health wise and I couldn’t earn enough to put down a deposit. I finally managed it via a combination of savings and a legacy that came in.
Duckswaddle · 25/08/2021 09:36
