How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

40 here too. renting til then.

Feel a bit 'whaaat?' about all these people who started mortgages in their 20s.

I also have friends who will Never buy. There is just no way. The prices are out of reach

Still own that house and have since bought another. I'm 50 and have never sold a house!

Thesagacontinues · 18/06/2021 21:11

Last year at 30.
Took us years to save our deposit.

Northern Rock 100% mortgage!
No deposit required but grandparents gave me £500 for the solicitors bill and I had lots of secondhand stuff

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 18/06/2021 21:13

25 with dh. Probably still wouldn't have one now at 30 if I did it alone...

proudwomansexmatters · 18/06/2021 21:13

23 for me!

ohidoliketobe · 18/06/2021 21:14

22 in 2009 with (now) DH. He'd been saving for a deposit for a few years as he had taken the apprentice route into the world of work. I was a year out of uni and ploughed as much money as I could from my Graduate role wage into savings to reach a deposit which was circa £12k in the end. Glad we did it pre kids when we had more disposible income.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/06/2021 21:16
  1. With an 100% mortgage and the interest rate was about 12%
Lottielovescake · 18/06/2021 21:18
  1. I graduated at 22 and got a really good job but it took us years to save whilst paying rent on a little house. We didn’t keep it long, only about 18 months before it was back on the market but we made a lot of money on it luckily and that funded a much bigger deposit and a move to our no 1 location just after my 30th birthday. That felt winning the lottery!
dopeyduck · 18/06/2021 21:18

27 - no help with deposit and fairly recent so no such thing as 100% mortgage.

mamawithfive · 18/06/2021 21:19
