How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

21 jointly with BF who I later married, that was 30 years ago. Scraped together the deposit with no parent help and moved in with only our clothes, the portable tiny tv from my childhood bedroom and a new mattress which was on the floor for a few months.
IMO getting on the property ladder is never a bad move.

  1. Only able to do that due to my partner putting up the deposit.

  1. No deposit, we got cash back from the seller!

21 in 1981. I bought a 3 bed terraced house next door to the hospital where I worked. It was £12,600 and I had a £600 deposit. Borrowed £12,000 and the mortgage rate was 15%Shock. Sold it for £15,000 18 months later when I got married.

  1. We were still flitting about Uni doing masters etc and renting was easier up until that point. This was 8 years ago.

23, mortgage free at 35

Depends on the decade in which people bought a house and if their parents paid their deposit.

28 - once qualified in my profession and earning enough (2002). Little flat in nice part of east London which was 169k. Now it goes for 450k 🤪

21 with boyfriend who was 26. They gave us 100% mortgage on the basis that I was due to graduate and they just assumed I would get a good job (I didn't) No way they would do that now.

MachiaNelly · 18/06/2021 22:16

18, with no help from parents, the year before we were married. The entire wedding cost no more than £150. Church with reception in a pub. Them was the days.

These answers are a bit meaningless without knowing how long ago the house was bought as the housing and mortgage market has changed so much over the years....I would be interested to know what the average age is now to buy a first property.

I was 21 when I got married with a joint mortgage.

I was 35 when I got a mortgage on my own.

Iwant2move · 18/06/2021 22:20

20 (my husband) he’d just graduated. I was 19 at the time but still at uni. £20,000 for a terraced house in a poor state but reasonable area. It was 45 minutes drive away from family but got us off to a good start. (1985).
