Is there anywhere on the coast that sells VEGAN fish & chips?

Hi, I’ve been vegan for years, but woke up this morning to a drizzly bank holiday weekend and have this yearning to sit on a beach eating fish & chips.

I know you can buy vegan ‘fish’ but I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere on the coast that sells it?

Many thanks.

Which coast?! Sounds like you’re prepared to travel 100s of miles. You do know that we can’t tell where you’re based, right?

I was going to suggest battered halloumi but realise that’s not vegan. I bet Brighton would have some, though.

Southend does, it has a pub directly outside the station. And I'd be shocked if Brighton didn't.

What's vegan fish?

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 07:33

We live in Yorkshire, and struggled one year to find a fish and chip shop in Bridlington that sold chips cooked in vegetable oil.

Every single fish and chip shop cooked their chips in beef dripping, so DD ended up sitting on the Quay with a jacket potato. She was so disappointed.

If you're in Swansea (bit of a long shot) then Canteen 18 does amazing tofish and chips

SpringtimeSummertime · 02/05/2021 07:34

You need somewhere that fries chips in vegetable / rapeseed/peanut oil for as start ( not beef dripping). As for the fish... a fake fish sounds gross. Just go for other things on the menu.

A quick Google gave me these places:

Laura’s Fish Bar, Whitley Bay, has a vegan menu which includes a deep fried banana blossom as the “fish” and also has battered vegan sausage and other stuff.

Ooh. I will tell DD. She lives in Newcastle now.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am east coast but thought it might be a helpful thread for people across the country.

Don't go to Brid then.

Some really good options here! Thank you.

Harbour Lights in Falmouth do them with tofu. My favourite chip shop.

If willing to stretch to vegetarian, battered halloumi and chips is delicious. Way better than cod or haddock.

dancemom · 02/05/2021 07:59

You know Britain is an island, there's a lot of coast

Did you mean the East Coast of Scotland? There's some great chippies there particularly Fife and Anstruther but may be a bit far to travel for someone on the East Coast of the Western Isles?

I think we might try Brighton. What’s it like there? Is there anything to do, any nice shops, etc?

No offence but this is a really odd thread.

Yes there’s a lot to do in brighton, it’s a major tourist destination.

Camomila · 02/05/2021 10:56

I was a bit unsure what to do today with the DC but I know now - we're off to eat fish and chips at the drizzley seafront!

Why is it odd?

Op had basically just asked for costal vegan restaurants? And has been back to explain why lack of being precise, as to help others who may may be interested?

Out of the millions of MN threads, I would say this is one of the least odd Grin
