What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

Nothing will change. Charles, or william will be king and we'll carry on as normal. Migjt get a bank holiday i guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

mnahmnah · 15/04/2021 15:02

I should imagine the royal mint have it all planned to phase a change in the image on money. HMRC would stay the same - His instead of Her. Only one word difference in the national anthem. I can’t imagine it would be a massive change in any way?

Bells3032 · 15/04/2021 15:03

They'll just change the word Hers to His. They've done it a hundred times before. there are plans in place for everything and every little detail has been thought through.

It'll be the Queen is dead, long live the King. On a day to day basis you'll barely notice

Bells3032 · 15/04/2021 15:04

Money will be changed gradually. it won't happen over night. New bills will have Charles' face on them and they'll gradually get into circulation just like when they brought out the new notes, or the pound coin designs

SingingSands · 15/04/2021 15:07

I remember my Gran telling me that after the King died, it was hard singing the national anthem and changing "king" to "queen".

Hopefully we will peacefully transition to not bothering to fund a royal family because support for that has dwindled considerably.

Justmuddlingalong · 15/04/2021 15:10

When new stamps appear it'll be a novelty for a while.

PicsInRed · 15/04/2021 15:11

Wording changes immediately, new money and infrastructure is cycled in as and when new stock is needed. Official mourning will be significant, I wouldn't expect as much opposition as seen to PP's mourning. There will be enormous pomp and ceremony around the funeral, proclamation of King, investiture of PW as new Prince of Wales (Kate becoming new Princess of Wales) and eventual coronation of (probably) King George VII.

Prince Edward will become Duke of Edinburgh (and Sophie presumably now Duchess of Edinburgh), as the title reverts to the Crown.

Some people will go absoutely mad when the Queen dies. As a republican I shall keep my head down for a while and wait it out quietly in an ideological bunker.

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 15:12

I'm doing some ferocious googling.

@GoWalkabout I would hope so too, alas I feel it could go either way, and indeed support for the monarchy could soar during the mourning period as people slip those rose tinted glasses on.

Pics - why do you think he will take on King George and not King Charles?

skeggycaggy · 15/04/2021 15:13

My Y8 thinks school will be closed and you’ll only be allowed to watch telly about the queen Grin

PicsInRed · 15/04/2021 15:14

Also I suppose we definitively find out if Archie becomes Prince Archie once he's grandchild to the reigning monarch.

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 15:15

Agreed, I worry it will be on the scale of Diana, though hopefully not as I think a lot of that was because it was so unexpected.

I do think though that people will absolutely try to out do each other with how much it's effected them. Confused

I actually really really hope it doesn't happen during anything Covid, because there are times when the nation needs ot gather in crowds.
I am not an ardent royalist, but I think the Queens death would stir a lot of people to want to gather and just mourn.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/04/2021 15:15

There will be a Bank Holiday for the Queen's funeral, I've read this week.

Most other things (money, post boxes etc) will be phased in. It's probably all planned for, given that the Queen is of an age where she could pass away at any time.

I don't know if it's still there, but in the last 5/10 years, I've seen a King George postbox somewhere.

Looking at the info for HMRC, it seems to be named as HM Revenue and Customs, which would mean it is not necessary to change the name when the Queen dies.

PicsInRed · 15/04/2021 15:15

They've said this for years. Bad connotations for the Charleses 😉

George will be his regnal name.

Probably not far off tbf!

Oh I think it will be worse. Probably more spread roudn the country though
ItsSnowJokes · 15/04/2021 15:16

Google "London Bridge is down" that is the plan that has been decided when the Queen dies. It is checked over and rehearsed periodically (more frequently now she is getting older).

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 15:16

Ah thank you @BarbaraofSeville that makes sense

Actually Charles is now Duke of Edinburgh as the title is hereditary, it will revert to the crown when Charles becomes king, at which point he’s promised his mother he’ll give it to Edward.

Whatever happens formally, the shock on the day of the queen's passing will see Britain effectively cease to function. The day of the funeral, about two weeks later, will be declared a bank holiday, but shell-shocked mourning will continue throughout this time.
I love this bit from that article above. Shell shocked?? She's a 90+ year old woman, she could go at any time!!
