What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

@skeggycaggy

My Y8 thinks school will be closed and you’ll only be allowed to watch telly about the queen Grin
ha! It might be a bit like when the Pope died when I lived in Poland. Everything pretty much shut up shop that day and for at least a day after . There was nothing else on TV for a while.
romdowa · 15/04/2021 16:25

What title will camilla get once Charles becomes king?

Mumoblue · 15/04/2021 16:26

I would like it if we just called it quits with the monarchy when the queen goes, but that’s obviously not likely.
I too wonder about the changing of all the money and that, and how much that’s going to actually cost.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/04/2021 16:27

The powers that be have made the optimistic decision to give us an extra Bank Holiday next year to celebrate the Queen's 70th year on the throne. They've moved the Bank Holiday that's usually the last Monday in May to the first Thursday in June with the extra one on the following day so we can all have a long weekend.

Worth bearing this in mind if you are at the planning stage now for anything affected by this. I've never quite got over the huge amount of extra work it created for me when we were given an extra Bank Holiday at very short notice for the William-Kate wedding. It was the last Friday in April, IIRC, and I had all sorts of things scheduled to happen then/start then and it all had to be re-jigged.

Camilla will be the Queen Consort, but I've read that she will be known as the Princess Consort. We shall see. At one point it was treason to discuss the death of a monarch!
viques · 15/04/2021 16:29

@Rukaya

Whether or not you like the queen/monarchy, one thing you can say is the the queen has provided an unruffled stability over decades

You can say it, I wouldn't agree. What stability has she brought? She just....exists. She doesn't actually do anything. (and don't start on about all the "works" she does, shaking hands and opening things is not of any real use to most of us).

It will be my third monarch. Honestly, all this chopping and changing. A person doesn’t know if they are coming or going.....

You must be over 85 years old.....

85! Cheeky. Mind you if I am I look bloody good for it. Grin

I am in my prime, and in my estimate I have been in my prime for the past twenty five years at least.

As a poster up thread noted, present Queen dates from 1952.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/04/2021 16:30

Yes, the plans for the succession will all slip seamlessly into place but I think a lot of the public reaction will depend on whether HMTQ has a period of illness and increasing debility, as PP did, or if she suddenly dies, which could certainly happen at her age.

Viviennemary · 15/04/2021 16:31

I wonder if Camilla will get the title Queen. They said she wouldn't but I don't think there is as much opposition to it now as there was. Probably because of the furore coming from other quarters. Camilla seems a steadying influence.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 15/04/2021 16:32

A republic, preferably.

BalloonSlayer · 15/04/2021 16:33

QCs will be changed to KCs I suppose in the legal profession

As several people have already said, the money won’t change.

They’ll just keep gradually producing new notes and coins each year as they do now, but with Charles on.

By the time William is King, there will still be millions of coins in circulation with Queen Elizabeth on.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/04/2021 16:35

A GM of mine could remember Queen Victoria dying when she was very little.

The church bells were tolling and her father said, ‘The Queen is dead!’ in a very sombre voice.

Poor little GM thought the world must be coming to an end if the Queen was dead. 😂

Lockdownbear · 15/04/2021 16:36

I think Camilla should be Queen she has been a great partner to Charles but maybe she'll end up Princess Camilla Duchess of Cornwall similar to Philips title.

But then I think DoC goes back to the Crown and goes with the PoW title...time will tell!

camelfinger · 15/04/2021 16:38

It will be annoying if you’ve planned e.g a weekend away in London and things get cancelled or the place is full of people lining the streets. Hopefully it will happen a while off yet so people have had chance to have a normal life without more disruption and being told what we must and mustn’t do and how we are supposed to feel about the death of someone we don’t know.

The TV by then will be more irrelevant as people can increasingly watch something else and turn off the news once the initial story has broken.

As time passes there are fewer people who care about following the RF to the same extent as they would have done years ago, there is so much more in life and entertainment nowadays. I don’t think there will be the same levels of excitement about a King Charles visit, with him wearing a suit. I kind of like how the queen wears blocky bright colours and looks distinctive.

LunarSea · 15/04/2021 16:39

@BarbaraofSeville

There will be a Bank Holiday for the Queen's funeral, I've read this week.

Most other things (money, post boxes etc) will be phased in. It's probably all planned for, given that the Queen is of an age where she could pass away at any time.

I don't know if it's still there, but in the last 5/10 years, I've seen a King George postbox somewhere.

Looking at the info for HMRC, it seems to be named as HM Revenue and Customs, which would mean it is not necessary to change the name when the Queen dies.

We still have some Queen Victoria postboxes locally.
milveycrohn · 15/04/2021 16:46

Well, there would be the ceremonial funeral (obviously thinking here post covid), and then the ceremonial coronation, and that's it.
(ha ha, only 30 to a funeral, no mention of how many to a coronation, but hopefully some years away, when all restrictions ended)
It will be King Charles reading the Gov speech at the State opening of parliament, and King Charles doing the red boxes, etc
Otherwise, not much difference to us ordinary folk.

BigBlueDog · 15/04/2021 16:46

Will John Lydon have to re-record this?

God save the queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
A potential H bomb
God save the queen
She's not a human being
and There's no future
And England's dreaming
Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
There's no future
No future
No future for you
God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves
God save the queen
'Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead
Is not what she seems
Oh God save history
God save your mad parade
Oh Lord God have mercy
All crimes are paid
Oh when there's no future
How can there be sin
We're the flowers
In the dustbin
We're the poison
In your human machine
We're the future
Your future
God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves
God save the queen
We mean it man
There's no future
In England's dreaming God save the queen
No future
No future
No future for you
No future
No future
No future for me
No future
No future
No future for you

Money won't - there were still George VI shillings/2 shillings doing duty as 5p and 10p coins in my childhood (70s/80s). I don't think they fully got rid of them until they made the coins smaller in the 1990s.

All that bollox doesn't;t have to happen though.

The whole Empire didn't fall apart when Queen Victoria snuffed it . . . oh - hang on . .

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 16:49

@viques I'm sorry, I'm confused too. You say you've lived through three monarchs, King George (the third monarch away) died in 1936. So even saying you were born in 1936, that WOULD make you 85.

I wonder if it will be like Diana dying with grown adults screaming and crying on the streets. I remember at eleven years old watching the Diana coverage to see forty-year-olds crying their eyes out, even at the age I just thought "get it together". I will just avoid the news and carry on as normal.

Charles can't keep his mouth shut Grin and likes to get involved in more decisions openly etc so I except a year or two with him in charge and putting his foot in it republicanism will rise.

merrygoround88 · 15/04/2021 16:51

Apart from days off for the funeral, life will continue as normal.

The only difference is that the Royal Family will become less respected and less popular

No, sorry for the confusion, I will be on my third monarch if I outlive the queen. Which ,fingers crossed ,I intend to do.
