What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

Charles is probably making more decisions than you think already.

I don't think the reaction to the Queen dying will be much different to Philip or Queen Mother dying. Old people at the end of their lifespan.
Diana was so young that it shocked people.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/04/2021 16:57

@GizmoBasil
I'm a similar vintage to Viques
Charles/George VII will be my third monarch

George VI (died 1952)
Elizabeth II (assuming she predeceases me)
then Charles

VettiyaIruken · 15/04/2021 16:58

She'll have a big funeral, we'll get some days off work, there'll be lots of black, Charles will be crowned and we'll have to remember it's now God save the king.

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 16:58

@viques ahhh that makes sense now!!

Very true, he's already taken over the majority of her responsibilities

@Dahlietta

It's Her Majesty's Of Revenue and Customs at the moment.

I think there will be a massive shock to the country when she dies because she is, as some have said, the stability in this country. With that in mind, I think Charles and William need to step up now and take on a large chunk of her work or be with her when she does her work to get us used to the change and to sort of hand it over to them. We should see less of her. She deserves a break TBH. She is 94!

Arbadacarba · 15/04/2021 17:07

It would be a good opportunity to revisit the national anthem, given that it's not very popular.

A new anthem could be chosen by means of a TV talent competition, judged by, say, Ozzy Osbourne, Davina McCall and the bloke from the 'Go Compare' adverts.

My entry will be a song called 'Anthem McAnthemFace' - I'll let William Hill know so they can open their books up for early bets.

KVIIIlyne · 15/04/2021 17:07

a few bank holidays to show respect would be great

Karatema · 15/04/2021 17:08

@PicsInRed

Also I suppose we definitively find out if Archie becomes Prince Archie once he's grandchild to the reigning monarch.
Why? Princess Anne's children are plain Mr Phillips and Mrs Tindall so why should Archie's title change? The King may bestow an honorific title on his grandchildren but I suspect he'll refrain until he knows how the public are likely to react!
Havanananana · 15/04/2021 17:09

Money won't - there were still George VI shillings/2 shillings doing duty as 5p and 10p coins in my childhood (70s/80s).

Before decimalisation in 1971 there were plenty of copper coins in circulation with Victoria on them - occasionally with the "young Victoria" portrait on them first introduced in 1860.

The old penny and half-penny coins in circulation might have Victoria, Edward VII, George V, George VI or Elizabeth on the face.

IHateThinkingUpANewUsername · 15/04/2021 17:09

How are people so confused by @viques. She said, ‘it WOULD be my third monarch’
Monarch 1: George
Monarch 2: Elizabeth (current)
Monarch 3: Charles (I.e in the future)

LettuceAveIt · 15/04/2021 17:11

I think people will be a lot more affected by it than they expect. I think it will be a big shock for the country and there will be a period of genuine mourning.

I’m not a monarchist/royalist / devotee of the royal family or whatever, but I think there’s a lot of affection for the queen, even among the indifferent or republican-leaning, plus she’s always just sort of been there.

Exactly. Were the Queen to pass away, Charles would be her third. No room for confusion.
SallySycamore · 15/04/2021 17:14

Why? Princess Anne's children are plain Mr Phillips and Mrs Tindall so why should Archie's title change?

That's because Anne's female, and it's only the children of sons who are Prince and Princess when their grandparent is Queen/King.

Alsohuman · 15/04/2021 17:18

@GoWalkabout

Hopefully we will peacefully transition to not bothering to fund a royal family because support for that has dwindled considerably.
I don’t think it has. Almost 2/3 of the population across all age groups support having a monarchy including almost half of 18-24 year olds.

Lockdownbear · 15/04/2021 17:19

Anne was offered titles and refused as did her first husband. They knew they'd need to make their own way in the world and thats easier to do without a title.

Kezzie200 · 15/04/2021 17:20

Nothing much will change as death is inevitable from life, so plans are always in place.

A lot of people will be upset but also reflect on her long and healthy life. If its a shock (like an accident) it will be worse.

She has had such a long and healthy reign that we all know what comes next, so that takes any surprise element out of it. Charles will take over with lots of help, I'm sure, so the young ones are more involved straight away whilst thay are not the formal monarch.

The mourning time will be taken far, far, more seriously than it has for Philip. Partly because she's the Monarch and partly because Philip made it clear he didn't want any fuss.

The funeral will be state and watched by millions. The number in attendance will be huge unless restrictions apply.

IsAnybodyListening · 15/04/2021 17:21

I believe the normal protocol is when her death is announced, all workers return home for the day and all businesses close for the remainder of the day to mourn the news. Then the day of the funeral is a national bank holiday.

KVIIIlyne · 15/04/2021 17:22

I think it will be more the older generations, who are used to have a the Queen as a constant in the background.

eekbumbler · 15/04/2021 17:25

Finding out winner of Masterchef will probably be spoiled for me. Again.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/04/2021 17:27

@ajandjjmum

Thank you to all those people who've bothered to come on the thread to let us know that 'they won't care'! Grin
Has anybody said they 'don't care'? I thought it was more a discussion about what happens when the Queen dies?

I think many people do quite like the Queen; not so her family so when she dies, that will be that for many.

Prince Phillip, if he hadn't been the husband of the Queen would have been shunted off into an old folks' home many years ago as a belligerent and rude old gentleman, typical of his privilege.

I neither care nor don't care, it's just an institution that I don't really understand and don't have enough interest in to get into it. Any other institution has very clear mandates but not this one.

Fernie6491 · 15/04/2021 17:28

viques
It will be my third monarch. Honestly, all this chopping and changing. A person doesn’t know if they are coming or going.....

grin

I will know to hang on to my model coronation coach this time, and not throw the box away.
Eh? How old are you exactly?! confused

I'm in my early seventies, so it'll be my third Monarch too. Firstly George lV, then Elizabeth ll, then Charles by whatever Regnal name he chooses.
