What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

It won't be the same as Diana. She was young and it was through an accident and a shock.

It also became a kind of mass Diana hysteria; "queen of hearts" stuff. It was like Diana's death was like a conduit to get rid of pent up emotions and feelings.

There will be maybe more reflective stuff with the Queen.

[quote Aposterhasnoname]Prince Edward will become Duke of Edinburgh (and Sophie presumably now Duchess of Edinburgh), as the title reverts to the Crown.

Actually Charles is now Duke of Edinburgh as the title is hereditary, it will revert to the crown when Charles becomes king, at which point he’s promised his mother he’ll give it to Edward.

Yes, that's correct. When it reverts to the crown, which occurs when Charles becomes King.

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 15:22

@emmathedilemma shell shocked Grin

I assume they mean that the countries identity will be shaken, but she'll shocked is a little much.

@SingingSands

I remember my Gran telling me that after the King died, it was hard singing the national anthem and changing "king" to "queen".
I will have no such difficulty. I don't know the words. Any of them. And won't be singing it.
BarbaraofSeville · 15/04/2021 15:24

@emmathedilemma

Whatever happens formally, the shock on the day of the queen's passing will see Britain effectively cease to function. The day of the funeral, about two weeks later, will be declared a bank holiday, but shell-shocked mourning will continue throughout this time. I love this bit from that article above. Shell shocked?? She's a 90+ year old woman, she could go at any time!!
Exactly. It's sad for the immediate family when someone dies, and it's a significant national event when a senior royal dies, but when they're 90+, it's hardly a surprise that would trigger shell shock and ceasing to function as a nation.

It's like a Daily Mash headline. Very old woman dies after a long and healthy life.

sleepyhead · 15/04/2021 15:24

Yeah, lol at shellshocked. The BBC and the tabloids will try to whip it up as much as they can, but I think we now know that manufactured compulsory mourning doesn't really work on a national scale in the 21st c.

ConstantlyChanging · 15/04/2021 15:25

Oh it’s going to be so tedious.

This past week or so has been a preview of the utter garbage we will have to endure as the nation collectively loses its shit about an extremely old and privileged lady dying.

Rukaya · 15/04/2021 15:26

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time

In what sense?
I think there will be no normal tv for at least a week and there will be endless faux mourning with a side of jingoism. But nothing that matters will change.

GizmoBasil · 15/04/2021 15:29

@Rukaya I suppose I mean in the iconography sense. The queen is really all anyone has ever known, despite a few major blemishes she has been incredibly consistent throughout the worst times in the country.

Christ can you imagine what the Daily Mail will be like. Envy

sleepyhead · 15/04/2021 15:32

But the queen doesn't play a significant part in our daily lives at all.

She's a figurehead on stamps and coins (both of which are far less used now).

She opens things, but so do lots of the RF.

She speaks on tv at Christmas (I've never seen it).

Erm..

It's a job that was literally designed to be filled seamlessly by someone else at short notice. Everything else will be the same, just a different body.

steppemum · 15/04/2021 15:35

I disagree, I do think the country will be a bit shell shocked.

Whether or not you like the queen/monarchy, one thing you can say is the the queen has provided an unruffled stability over decades.
She is just there, half smile and measured words saying nothing.
It is the very fact that she has been there for so long that will cause the shock.
I think many people will feel as if an era has gone, as if something solid under our feet has shifted,

In reality, Charles will become a male version of the queen, as he has got older he has become more like her in that respect, duty and public image, and it will all go on, and things will settle down for another 20 years.

Lockdownbear · 15/04/2021 15:39

@PicsInRed

Also I suppose we definitively find out if Archie becomes Prince Archie once he's grandchild to the reigning monarch.
Not all HMQs GC are Prince / Princess so I don't think it will happen, especially if Harry isn't a Working Royal and they are living in the US.
TheSpottedZebra · 15/04/2021 15:43

There will be SO MUCH CLAPPING.

Aboutnow · 15/04/2021 15:45

I met some Australians recently who said that the general feeling over there is that when the Queen dies Australians will not want Charles to be their King.
Over here I think the fact that so many people complained about the ongoing BBC coverage after Philip died will have been noted by the palace. Fifty years ago people would have wanted 8 days of public mourning. Now most people just want to feel sad that someone lost a beloved family member, spend a day reflecting on the good job he did for the country (like millions of other people), maybe watch the funeral and then get on with life.

Times have changed, people have changed, we need a very slimmed down, accountable, relatable monarchy.

ajandjjmum · 15/04/2021 15:47

Thank you to all those people who've bothered to come on the thread to let us know that 'they won't care'! Grin

Apileofballyhoo · 15/04/2021 15:50

Interesting that the Duke of Edinburgh title is hereditary - are the Duke of York and Sussex titles the same?

Esse321 · 15/04/2021 15:51

So Charles will change his name because its bad luck to reign as Charles? seems a bit superstitious - and why call him Charles in the first place knowing he would have to change it Hmm

bitheby · 15/04/2021 15:52

People are still alive who were born before 1952 so they've known life before the Queen.

I don't suppose we'll fall apart as a nation. I can't see civil unrest on the streets.

viques · 15/04/2021 15:53

It will be my third monarch. Honestly, all this chopping and changing. A person doesn’t know if they are coming or going.....

Grin

I will know to hang on to my model coronation coach this time, and not throw the box away.

SallySycamore · 15/04/2021 15:53

All the male line ones are. Edward and Sophie's children just don't use the titles, but they could.

Whingey · 15/04/2021 15:54

Postbox at Walton on the Naze has VR on Queen Victoria

prh47bridge · 15/04/2021 15:54

@GoWalkabout

Hopefully we will peacefully transition to not bothering to fund a royal family because support for that has dwindled considerably.
Whilst it has fallen somewhat in recent years, polls suggest that over half the general public want to retain the monarchy with supporters outnumbering those who want a republic by roughly 2 to 1. There are a significant number of undecideds but, even if they all voted for a republic, monarchy would still win.
Susie477 · 15/04/2021 15:55

I’ve got a holiday in a non-English speaking country planned for that week, whenever it comes. The enforced public grief-fest will be intolerable. Last weekend was bad enough.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/04/2021 15:56

@Apileofballyhoo

Interesting that the Duke of Edinburgh title is hereditary - are the Duke of York and Sussex titles the same?
Yes, but the Duke of York title will revert to the crown as it can’t be inherited by his daughters. Archie will become Duke of Sussex one day though.
