What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

I think there would be some shock as in the end of an era, but not the kind of shock as in Diana's death. At 99, a recent hospital stay and a bit of speculation at the sighting of family visiting in light of Covid restrictions, and Prince Phillip's death is no shocking tragedy.

Public mood is also strongly affected by a year of Covid restrictions. The public's emotional wellbeing has taken a hit over the winter and normal routines still haven't resolved. Blanket coverage across the BBC has provoked a stronger reaction to normal.

Give it a year or two when society is feeling more emotionally normal and a mood for public mourning/ reminiscing will be more in line with usual expectations.

In terms of practical change, Beavers and Brownies will adapt to God Save the King far quicker than the leaders.
King Charles will get used to being mis-gendered as we're too used to the Queen since 1952 Grin

Fernie6491 · 15/04/2021 17:31

Oops George Vl, I'd be pretty old for George lV !

ConstantlyChanging · 15/04/2021 17:32

I think there will be a massive shock to the country when she dies because she is, as some have said, the stability in this country.

94 year old woman is that stability of the entire country... Well that explains a lot.

Arbadacarba · 15/04/2021 17:32

Before decimalisation in 1971 there were plenty of copper coins in circulation with Victoria on them - occasionally with the "young Victoria" portrait on them first introduced in 1860.

Wow! Interesting how long coins stay in circulation. I had what looked like a newly-minted 2p a few months ago and was amazed to see it was actually minted in 1971. I wondered if either someone had cleaned it or it had spent 50 years stuck down the back of a sofa.

JustLyra · 15/04/2021 17:32

@Esse321

So Charles will change his name because its bad luck to reign as Charles? seems a bit superstitious - and why call him Charles in the first place knowing he would have to change it Hmm
Because for the royals reigning under a different name isn’t uncommon.

George VI was called Prince Albert
Edward VIII was Prince David
Edward VI was Prince Albert Edward

Even Queen Victoria was Princess Alexandrina Victoria

Pics - why do you think he will take on King George and not King Charles?
''Eventual'' with Prince George VII.

Thank you to all those people who've bothered to come on the thread to let us know that 'they won't care'!

until they have been given the chance to express their opinion on a referendum and we know what the majority would decide, fair enough to make comments, isn't it?

Maireas · 15/04/2021 17:36

Edward VIII was Edward. His friends called him David.

Arbadacarba · 15/04/2021 17:36

It's been suggested Charles might adopt the regnal name of George but it's not certain.

Personally I don't think he will because he's been in the public eye as Charles for too long. If he'd become king when he was younger it might have worked.

not working too well with Brexit!

Feedingthebirds1 · 15/04/2021 17:38

As anyone whose parent(s) died after a long illness and at a great age will tell you - knowing it's coming doesn't make it any less of a shock or the grief any less when they pass.

Dahlietta · 15/04/2021 17:39

It's Her Majesty's Of Revenue and Customs at the moment.

I know that... I thought it was fairly obvious that it would become His Majesty’s and thus remain HMRC!

peak2021 · 15/04/2021 17:40

I hope it is a long way off.

I can imagine at events where the National Anthem is played, there will be some people singing 'God Save the Queen' instead of 'God Save the King' for quite a long time after the Queen's death.

The Netherlands had Queens for over 120 years, but in their case as Queen Beatrix abdicated in favour of her son, they did have a few weeks warning as it were.

Someone probably polished it...They polish up beautifully. I used them as weights for cooking...a 2p weights about 7 grammes, so a pile of 8 of them makes 2oz for oldskool recipes.

I polished them, too. Come up gleaming, but never polish Victorian or earlier coins.

Georgian pennies are amazing....''Dead man's pennies'' as they are so big and heavy they were used to weigh down the eyelids of the deceased.

Big, chunky pennies they are... back when a penny was probably worth the equivalent of a £10 note.

The previous two didn't do so well.
Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 15/04/2021 17:42

Although a lot of Australians want to be a Republic when the Queen dies (and who can blame them) I can't see the overthrowing of the monarchy happening here. We are just too complacent.
I am also going to experience my third monarch when Charles becomes King. I was ten days old when George VI died so I have only known the Queen as monarch.
My mother is a few weeks older than the Queen and remembers the abdication crisis, and how shocked they were. It was s different, more deferential age.

ListeningQuietly · 15/04/2021 17:43

Anne's children were entirely entitled to Royal titles.
She chose not to use them.
Edwards children are entitled to Royal titles.
He has chosen not to use them.

When Kate Cambridge was pregnant the law was changed to make male and female children equal for succession ant titles.

Harry gave up Archie's right to a Royal title. That is done and dusted.

Interesting that Penny Mountbatten is going to the funeral but her husband (the one was actually related to Philip) isn't. Speaks volumes.

Geranibum · 15/04/2021 17:43

@BarbaraofSeville

There will be a Bank Holiday for the Queen's funeral, I've read this week.

Most other things (money, post boxes etc) will be phased in. It's probably all planned for, given that the Queen is of an age where she could pass away at any time.

I don't know if it's still there, but in the last 5/10 years, I've seen a King George postbox somewhere.

Looking at the info for HMRC, it seems to be named as HM Revenue and Customs, which would mean it is not necessary to change the name when the Queen dies.

They won't change the postboxes or the money until they need replacing. There are still plenty of postboxes around from before the reign of the current queen, it's just that she's been monarch for so long that most have been replaced within the last 70-odd years (in fact many streets have been laid out since then!) When I was a child in the 1970s and 80s there were a lot of old 5p and 10p coins in circulation that were actually shilling and two-shilling pieces with George VI on them. I guess they will just start minting ones with a Charles on (and you can bet your boots that the portrait has already been designed and tested). The words to the National Anthem will change (well, one word will) but HM-anything will stay the same. I guess the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace (Royal Art collection ) will have to change its name. What else would change?

Oh, yes - I think I've got one somewhere. Enormous thing!

I thought exactly the same ConfusedGrin

And if he becomes King George does that mean when the actual Prince George becomes king he'll be a number higher than he is in the succession of George's?

I wish they'd choose some different names.

I'd love a King Sebastian or Queen Matilda - of something equally classic but modern!

Arbadacarba · 15/04/2021 17:47

What else would change?

Barristers will be King's Counsel not Queen's Counsel.

BMW6 · 15/04/2021 17:49

He was called David by the family too.

Anne’s children were not entitled to royal titles. Females can’t pass their titles on. The only way they would have been titled would have been for Mark Philips to accept the offer of a title, in the same way Princess Margaret’s husband did.

The LP’s that were issued when Kate was pregnant only affect the children of the Cambridge’s. The 1917 LP’s were not changed and females still cannot pass on their titles.

Archie will automatically legally be HRH Prince Archie when Charles takes the throne unless the 1917 LP’s are changed.

It’s not that surprising that Penny Mountbatten is going. The Earl massively disagraced himself and disappeared off to the Caribbean years ago. Penny is/was very close to both the Queen and Philip. She’s also been very active in her role as countess and is basically seen as head of the family. The only way she wouldn’t have been there would have been if lady Pamela was well enough to go to represent the Mountbattens.

wonderstuff · 15/04/2021 17:53

I hope Camilla takes on Princess rather than Queen, I'd like to think that a legacy of QEII would be that King and Queen get equal billing, meaning consorts get Prince/Princess

I think we'll have a few years yet, queen mother was 102 and drank like a fish apparently.

I don't think it will be quite the outpouring that Diana generated, she was so young and W&H still so small. I think it will be closer to when queen mother died which was still a big deal, people queued for hours to sign remembrance books and she lay in state for several days.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 15/04/2021 17:54

Listeningquietly it isn't speaking volumes to me. Why is it significant that Penny Mountbatten is attending and not her husband? I have never heard of either of them.
