What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

OP posts:

Hope covid's over by then.

RickiTarr · 19/04/2021 21:20

You seem bizarrely over-invested to me, with a particular specialism in trying to make standard-issue UC crass 'quips' sound ok

How can you be over invested if you’re unaware of someone’s existence?

She said “bizarrely overinvested TO me”, not “bizarrely overinvested IN me”. So I don’t really see what you mean.

Alsohuman · 19/04/2021 21:40

OK 🤷‍♀️

YellowPurple · 19/04/2021 22:40

@GizmoBasil

Yes OP the police badge will change, the same as the army badge and post boxes, notes and stamps because its ER at the moment! With is for the queen

The funeral day will be a bank holiday

When she dies The London Stock Exchange will close too

I may or may not have contributed to ongoing G2G (good to go) obituaries of famous figures and celebrities for the major nationals. It's dark, macabre etc but in many cases is done in partnership with their agent / spokesperson... publications are ready for the death of most public figures (even major pop stars / actors) at all times. Weirdness level I couldn't have imagined before I worked in 'the industry'.

@murbblurb. When Phil "retired" he went to live at Wood Farm and the Queen continued to work from Buck House during the week and went to Windsor at weekends. I think I read somewhere that they spent July, Aug and Sept at Balmoral together and I expect when the Queen went to Sandringham for Christmas until early Feb, he moved up to the big house from Wood Farm whilst she was there. They were definitely apart until Covid and he was brought to Windsor to form a bubble with her before the lockdown set in. A couple of weeks ago her cousin was on tv and I heard her say that the aristocracy always had separate bedrooms with connecting doors, in case they wanted to get cosy ( as she put it). Years ago when Michael Fagin broke into Buck House, she was alone in bed when he got to her room and Phil was "nearby" but didn't hear a thing and only knew after a foot men or valet told him. I remember reading that the maid had come in to open the curtains and said "Bloody hell mam, what's he doing here?" Apparently the Queen watered her remark down a bit in the official police report! After that they improved the security. So many homes to choose from and they seem to hand (privately owned) Balmoral and Sandringham down without any inheritance tax; should be like that for everyone, being able to leave a family home for the next generation

PollyPepper · 20/04/2021 05:29

@YellowPurple I'm police and racking my brains for where we have the ER logo anywhere. Even on our warrant card holders its just the emblem of the force.

Lockdownbear · 20/04/2021 07:23

@Petlover9 not sure about inheritance tax but my guess is they do pay it can't see why they'd be exempt. But maybe laws in inheritance tax have changed in the last 69 years.

When the King abdicated King George VI bought Sandringham and Balmoral off him. They weren't automatically handed over.

Sovereign to sovereign transfers are exempt from inheritance tax. So as long as the Queen leaves things to Charles there would be no IHT, but to anyone else there is (which is why the bulk of their personal estate stays sovereign to sovereign).

CarolinaWeeper · 20/04/2021 08:54

I'm of a younger generation and will be very sad to see the Queen go. She was on the throne before my parents were alive. For me the royal family are a big part of our national identity, part of our history and our culture. I don't want a president or to be a republic...... I think there is a lot of support for the monarchy even in my generation.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/04/2021 19:48

Will we get a balcony scene like this again or will they have dampened down everything to suit modern sensitivities by then?

What will happen when the Queen dies???
Lockdownbear · 20/04/2021 20:04

I'll assume that's the Kings Coronation and Queen crowned too.
Debatable if Camilla will be Queen, but assuming that W&K stay together then probably.

JustLyra · 20/04/2021 20:49

I think there will be a balcony scene, even George V and Queen Mary appeared on the balcony on their coronation day. Even in a very scaled back event that would be one of the iconic images of it.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/04/2021 20:56

Yes I have no doubt that they will do the balcony scene. I am just wondering if it will be a lot less formal. Maybe just Charles wearing his crown and gown. Not anyone else dressed up in anything more than a suit or posh dress.

JustLyra · 20/04/2021 21:10

I think it’ll be full on trappings. The royals will all be in their finery.

They’ve got to find a balance between catching the mood I know, but they’ve got to keep a huge element of that pomp and ceremony otherwise they just become over paid civil servants.

They can’t use the tourist and tv numbers if they don’t have the regalia and pomp imo.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/04/2021 21:20

You are probably right. I just wonder outside of something sad like a funeral. How much is too much for Jo public. Can imagine the royal family are constantly trying to figure that out too.

JustLyra · 20/04/2021 21:45

I think they probably are trying to make sure they balance that, but we’ve had massive royal weddings and we still have (outwith covid times) the pomp of opening of Parliament, the garter service and parade and Trooping the colour.

I don’t think we’re done with royal pomp and ceremony yet. Especially as for a huge number of people the coronation will be the first one they’ve seen.

I think one thing that might change is that it might not be a whole year before a coronation happens. That could be the “he’s been King for a year, why is the party now?” thing that possibly doesn’t work anymore

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/04/2021 21:51

Oh yes everyone wants things to happen instantly these days

I remember seeing the golden carriage. Think it was in the museum of London. Will be good to see that all hitched up to horses again.

YellowPurple · 20/04/2021 22:51

@PollyPepper

Some warrant cards have ER and some hats too

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/04/2021 23:23

It may just be the Metropolitan police force that uses ER on their badges??

Lockdownbear · 20/04/2021 23:38

I don't think the Coronation will take a year either. I wouldn't be overly surprised if its already planned like the funerals. I'd expect it would probably be 4-8 months depending on the time of year.

JustLyra · 21/04/2021 00:19

It’ll be interesting to see how they deal with it. There is usually a period of one year where the royal family don’t do “celebratory” events like coronations and big weddings.

George VI’s coronation was the exception because of the circumstances as he basically got the same coronation that had been planned for his brother, one year after the death of their father.

It’ll have to be played carefully because Charles won’t want to be seen as insensitive or not paying his mother the respect she deserves. That’s going to be one of his early tricky hurdles.

JustLyra · 21/04/2021 00:20

Plus there is usually a temporary annexe built at the Abbey to allow the processions to be formed up and the likes so there will have to be time for that and other practicalities.

Hanidjed7 · 21/04/2021 07:42

And depending on whether we still have any "restrictions" 🤔🤔
Lockdownbear · 21/04/2021 08:20

I don't think they will hold off too long because of restrictions. More likely they'd do a scaled down version at Windsor.
Purely because we have no real idea when restrictions will be lifted completely. And people lining the streets using portaloos is as far from SD as you can get.

I think they'd be more likely to hold off for spring / summer weather rather than the end of covid.
