Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

A coronation will be at Westminster abbey even if there are restrictions imo.

Every coronation since 1066 has been there so that’s the one thing we can pretty much guarantee will not change.

Lockdownbear · 21/04/2021 08:38

Has there been a Coronation during a pandemic which the Government have tried to control via Social Distancing?

JustLyra · 21/04/2021 08:54

I really have no idea why people feel the need to be unnecessarily rude

What's that meant to be a dig at?

Just because Westminster is where things happened in the past doesn't mean thats what need to happen in the future. A bit like the Guncarriage being replaced by Philips Landrover.

JustLyra · 21/04/2021 09:33

There’s perfectly easy ways to disagree with an opinion without being snarky and rude.

There’s just no need for it.

JustLyra · 21/04/2021 09:35

In my opinion given that Westminster has held every coronation since 1066 it will hold the next one. Regardless of distancing and restrictions.

It’s much more significant, and historical, than the mode of transport used for the body of the consort who didn’t even want a public funeral at all, but accepted he must to an extent.

Lockdownbear · 21/04/2021 10:03

Well my opinion is if they Queen unfortunately dies during this pandemic both her funeral and her DSs Coronation will be held at Windsor Castle.

The Castle is enclosed which enables them to manage crowds, ie not have any.

In March last year nobody thought SD would still be a thing in 14mths time. We don't know when SD will end.

Charles is in his 70s, they wouldn't want to wait 2/3 years for his Coronation.

I think any discussion of where a coronation would be held with restrictions is ridiculous. The Queen’s showing no signs of going anywhere at the moment, meanwhile there were two deaths from covid one day earlier this week.

I hope I’m right in thinking that by the time another coronation takes place restrictions will be a distant memory.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 21/04/2021 10:48

I think the queen looks like she will last until the end of the pandemic without to much trouble.

However if the worst happens then yes anothe Windsor funeral is likely. Short notice and no control over time of year etc

Charles coronation would be different. They can set the date to be just right for spring or summer. At whatever time is calculated to be lower cases period. Plus outside transmission is found to be extremely low. So Westminster as tradition would be very likely.

Also around a 6 month gap if they can help it. Enough to be respectful and too prepare but not so long our instant gratification society get bored.

Lockdownbear · 21/04/2021 11:20

I hope the Queen does out last covid.

It would be a real shame for the Coronation to be behind closed doors but it's not just people in the streets they need to worry about. It's those sorts of numbers packing onto trains, buses, portaloos and the risk of the virus being passed on amongst 100s of people within the Abbey from all over the world.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 21/04/2021 12:07

I think the evidence from the BLM and anti lockdown protests have shown they didn't cause a rise in cases as feared. I do get what you mean. However public transport will require masks and again the rise of the London commuters didn't cause an issue.
The same goes for cafes and restaurants. Public health England say that no major outbreak has ever been linked to them. Which is why closing them for so long is scandalous. The safety measures put in place were enough (Whole other thread needed there). Pubs would potentially be an issue but they could just order them closed to inside customers for the day.

Public toilets I have no idea about the risks🤷‍♀️ Not sure if an data is available. Which is actually interesting because you would have thought it was a possible high risk point I general.

Sandra15 · 21/04/2021 12:38

These last few posts are assuming she's going to pop off whilst covid is still around. Yes she is 95 (today! hurrah!) but she's in finer fettle than her mother was, who lived to almost 102. I don't think our Liz is going anywhere yet.

JustLyra · 21/04/2021 12:43

How is discussing how it would potentially work if it did happen, given the changes that had to be made to Prince Philip’s funeral, assuming it will?

It’s no more an assumption than any of the other “what if” things that have been discussed.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 21/04/2021 13:15

We have already said it isn't very likely. This is just pondering of the issues that could arise in the event.
