I've been researching my family tree and there are a lot of surnames, mostly usual Irish, Scottish but some interesting ones and it got me thinking about surnames in general.

I always thought Italian surnames are very beautiful, Baccino, Santangelli.

I love ones that are simple such as Flower, Beach and Ocean too.

So, what's the most beautiful one you have ever heard?

My dad had a half Japanese/half Scottish colleague by the name of Yakimotl Hamilton. Such great cultural juxtaposition!
I went to school with a Mexican Japanese boy called Ramon Takahashi.

My (married) surname is beautiful. So much so, I eschewed my previous feminist principles and took his name when I married him as mine was really dull. I can’t out myself by saying what it is but it’s a geographical name.

Devine! The only person I know with this name is lovely!

I used to date a Devine. His brother had a baby girl and every name they thought about for her, sounded like a porn star name.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 03/04/2021 15:03

I knew some called Jane Honeydew which I thought was a lovely name. But my current name-crush is someone called Rosie Faraci. It may not be a beautiful surname as such, but is definitely the coolest name I’ve ever come across!

A colleague’s daughter worked in maternity and always regaled us with the names chosen. My favourite was Versace McLetchie.

DinosApple · 03/04/2021 15:07

We have a Clutterbuck in our family tree. I've always liked that name, it sounds bucolic.

Echobelly · 03/04/2021 15:09

Bowtell (an Anglicisation of a Hugenot name, apparently)

I like the Hungarian surname Horvath

allofthecheese · 03/04/2021 15:10

Went to school with a Hailstones

My grandmother was Ivy Knowles Dashwood

I have the most boring surname you could imagine

Are you related to Beyonce?
AlfonsoTheTerrible · 03/04/2021 15:14

There are some great names on this thread. Two of my many favourites are Peppercorn and Snowgoose.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 03/04/2021 15:16

@KitchenWarrior

Friend is my favourite. What a recommedation.

Snowball and Rainbow are common surnames in the north east but I feel they sound a little silly on an adult.

Are they? Heard Snowball but not a Rainbow and I'm in Co Durham!
Thatsmoneyhoney · 03/04/2021 15:18

Boho7 · 03/04/2021 15:20

Athenajm80 · 03/04/2021 15:25

Outing perhaps, but I don't care. I used to hate my surname when I was younger, then one day I decided I loved it to the point of telling dad I'd never change it as otherwise it would die out. I didn't realise he had two sons from a previous marriage then 😂
My surname is Mandeville. Sadly it's also the name of the probation hostel in Cardiff (used to predominantly be for sex offenders). However when I go to Jamaica, which used to be v frequently, anyone who hears my surname tells me about the town named Mandeville.

WiseOwlOne · 03/04/2021 15:25

Valentine is a lovely sur name. I like the name Gillespie as well. It seems, normal, believable, but it sounds lovely and if I go in to witness protection I want to be Ms Gillespie!

OverByYer · 03/04/2021 15:27

I know a few Shakesheffs I like the way it sounds

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 03/04/2021 15:27

Name encountered just now: Godlova (p9 Take a Break magazine).

MintyCedric · 03/04/2021 15:28

I've always quite fancied Devereaux as a surname.

None of our family ones are that quirky, but my great nan was a Cherryman which is nice.

19thNamechange · 03/04/2021 15:28

Gotobed always makes me smile.

I get a little frisson of pleasure whenever the journalist Damien Gramatticus is mentioned. A surname with gravitas!
