I've been researching my family tree and there are a lot of surnames, mostly usual Irish, Scottish but some interesting ones and it got me thinking about surnames in general.

I always thought Italian surnames are very beautiful, Baccino, Santangelli.

I love ones that are simple such as Flower, Beach and Ocean too.

So, what's the most beautiful one you have ever heard?

The caretaker at my junior school was Mr Crapp. You just never took the piss, he looked frightening to kids the age we were.

I went to college with a girl whose aunties surname by marriage was Pinkballs.

I love the Scottish surname Crozier- sounds so classy to me.

On the flip side, I've known someone with the surname Slaughter .... who went on to be a doctor (and changed his name )

Mrs Angel was my favourite teacher in one of my primary schools and Mr Chulmleigh was my science teacher at grammar school- 😂 suited him!😂

@NeverDropYourMoonCup, cœur is masculine so it's "bon cœur" originally.

So I knew two families with the surname Rose - both lovely people. Although in one case Mrs Rose’s first name was Mary (So Mary Rose) and I think she had a hard time explaining that yes, that was her actual name, a few times. Lovely lady though and I often wonder what happened to them after we moved away.

I’ve currently got a dentist called Mr (Dr?) Payne which amuses me.

I used to know someone else with Loveday’ as a surname, which as a teenager I think she found hard but I loved!

My neighbours surname is Lambkin-I think it’s really sweet. I also knew an elderly lady called Mrs Christmas and she was lovely.

My French is atrocious. I thought I was doing well in recognising the meaning!

In any case, it's the surname I'd be using if I suddenly needed to adopt a new identity as a part of a witness protection programme or suchlike...

SuperintendentHastings · 04/04/2021 10:37

I used to go to school with a girl called Marielle Sunny. She was just the most beautiful girl and suited her name perfectly. She died quite young and I often think of her and her lovely name.
