What do your kids eat from the chippy?

I fancy Chinese tonight and dp will have fish and chips.
Kids will only pick at chips and might push to a sausage, really trying to encourage them to broaden their horizons any ideas? What’s your kids chippy order?

What do you mean by fries as opposed to big fat proper chippy chips? My kebab shop does big fat proper chippy chips- if you mean potatoes cut up and put in a deep fat fryer.

Comefromaway · 20/03/2021 12:34

Chippys tend to sell a variety of food alongside the staple fish and chips.

Our local one sells fish cakes, scampi, sausages, puddings, nuggets & kebabs. Fish & sausages are always available, the rest are cooked to order.

Comefromaway · 20/03/2021 12:36

Kebabs tend to only be available at ours on certain days eg Friday & Saturdays.

Whereas a kebab shop would have kebabs as their staple and anything else like fries as optional extra.

XiCi · 20/03/2021 12:36

Most kebab/pizza/burger places just do fries. They are thinner than the chips you get in a proper 'chippy' and usually frozen and just chucked in the deep fat fryer.

Comefromaway · 20/03/2021 12:37

I tend to find as well that kebab shops tend to be located on high streets/in shopping areas whereas you find local chippys in the middle of purely residential areas.

Chip shop chips vs fries

Our chip does lots of main items with chips but also sells pizzas, pasta, kebabs, pakora, etc.

I wouldn't call a kebab shop a chippy as they mainly sell kebabs rather than chips with everything

minniemoocher · 20/03/2021 12:45

Dd has a couple of fried eggs (she'll cook them whilst I pick up) plus curry sauce, other dc sausage in batter. They do cod bites here too or hallomi fries

maddiemookins16mum · 20/03/2021 13:00

DD used to just have chips 🤗.

PinkTonic · 20/03/2021 13:18

When mine were young our fish and chip shop did cod tails and small chips as a child option so they had that or a small sausage. They’d eat whatever we ordered from the Chinese or Indian.

foreverchangingmyname · 20/03/2021 13:19

@Blueberryblueberry wait, chop suey rolls aren't standard outside of Liverpool? I feel so uneducated Grin
There is a Chinese chippy called Tso's that does the best one I've ever tasted, they've ruined all my the others for me now!

BarbaraofSeville · 20/03/2021 13:32

The Chinese takeaway we go to, in Leeds, not Liverpool, does a large pancake roll, which has bits of meat, egg and beansprouts inside a dinner plate sized pancake, which is wrapped up burrito style and deep fried, big that's the sort of thing people are thinking about.

XiCi · 20/03/2021 13:36

You can get chop suey rolls everywhere foreverchangingmyname. Sone people call them pancake rolls. I'd love a chinese buffet at Tso's right now 😋

dementedpixie · 20/03/2021 14:04

Is that the same as a spring roll?

XiCi · 20/03/2021 14:09

dementedpixie no, chop suey rolls are huge. So basically a chop suey rolled in a pancake and deep fried. So about 10 times at least the size of a spring roll.

Popcornbetty · 20/03/2021 14:12

4 year old likes fresh cod fishcake, chips amd mushy peas

ShipOfTheseus · 20/03/2021 14:13

Well, now I don’t think I know of any chippies, if a fish and chip shop or a kebab shop don’t count.

Popcornbetty · 20/03/2021 14:13

Omg i haven't has a chop suey roll in years!

Popcornbetty · 20/03/2021 14:13

had

I hadn't heard of them so we don't get them where I am then

A chippy is a fish and chip shop
FoxyTheFox · 20/03/2021 14:20

Spring rolls are roughly the length of a finger and eaten in two bites. A chop suey roll from the chippy is massive in comparison and roughly the length and thickness of a burrito, easily big enough for two pre-teen DC to share

FoxyTheFox · 20/03/2021 14:24

Have we had the batter/scraps/scrapings debate yet? Grin

Crumbly bits of leftover batter, sprinkled over the top of your meal to give it some crunch. What do you call them? They're called batter here as in "chip butty splash and a smokey and chips, all with batter please".

We don't get that here either
Sandgrown1970 · 20/03/2021 14:31

To be honest, just good old fish and chips and some bread, curry sauce or beans!

They’d also take

Sausage, chips and gravy

Fish “bites” chips and beans

Fishcake chips and beans

But pies and puddings (just not kidney) have also gone down well too.
