I fancy Chinese tonight and dp will have fish and chips.
Kids will only pick at chips and might push to a sausage, really trying to encourage them to broaden their horizons any ideas? What’s your kids chippy order?

Never had scraps, never lived anywhere it was offered.

XiCi · 20/03/2021 15:00

I hadn't heard of them so we don't get them where I am then
Yeah sorry when I said you get them everywhere I meant they're available all over the UK and not limited to a geographical area, I didn't mean everywhere as in every town, village and hamlet Smile. Whereas the 'scraps' I imagine you'd only get in very specific areas

Tangledtresses · 20/03/2021 15:23

God I miss London chip shops!

SavannahLands · 20/03/2021 22:03

In most Yorkshire coast Chip.shops Scraps are offered free to every customer that wants them, intact they look at you rather strangely if you say 'No Thankyou!'.
In our little Bus station Cafe here in Derbyshire, they offer a ' Bacon Splash'. It's a Bacon Bap with a spoonful of Chopped Tinned Tomatoes on the Bacon, apparently something that has been popular there since it first opened in the 1950s!

Have to ask for scraps

You need to be in the know 🤫

CMOTDibbler · 21/03/2021 08:48

Yes, my ds started wanting them after he accidentally (as in the batter had just been a bit messy that day and there were lots of odd bits) got some with his battered sausage in a cafe, and the owner said 'oh, you like scraps then, I'll do them for you next time'. Then he wanted to see if the chip shop did them, and though they aren't on the menu it wasn't a problem.
I think the difference back in the day was that the tiny batter bits were skimmed off the fryer and kept specifically to sell, and now if you ask for them they dribble batter into the fryer specifically

Oooh I used to love a pattie butty, chips and scraps.

Pattie is a hull thing, seasoned mash deep fried in batter.

Will now bring up chip spice too.

JackieTheFart · 21/03/2021 13:40

Jeez, I went out and got a chippy tea for us after being inspired by this thread - it cost £23.80 for two sausage dinners and fish and chips three times (not three fish and chips as I was corrected Grin)

@wheresmyhairytoe they sell patties in Liverpool as well but call them something else. A savoury cake, but I can’t remember what’s in it. There’s also scallops which are a bit like hash browns, but also battered.

jessstan2 · 21/03/2021 14:14

Why do you call it a 'chippy tea'? Do you dip the chips in tea? I know in some areas gravy is served at chippies.

dementedpixie · 21/03/2021 14:17

Does chippy tea not mean a meal from the chip shop that is for your tea (or dinner if that's what you call it). Nothing to do with the drink of tea

FoxyTheFox · 21/03/2021 14:37

Tea as in the evening meal "tea", aka dinner or supper as other areas might call it.

Chippy tea = food from the chip shop for your tea/dinner/supper.

Gravy is served at all the chippies here (Northumberland).

My local chippy has been ran since the 1980's by an Indian family and not only do they the most amazing usual chippy food eg fish, fish cakes, pies, sausages, mushy peas etc they do kebabs of various forms and curries. They have a huge tandoori oven behind the counter where they cook fresh kebabs and naan in front of you. There is so much choice;you'd never get bored.

My kids have various stuff from there fish cakes, nuggets, fish, sausage, pie, donner meat, chunks of freshly cooked tandoori chicken etc

Have you honestly never heard anyone describe their dinner as tea? Have you been living under a rock? I say breakfast, lunch and dinner as do all my family but I’ve never not been aware that a massive amount of people refer to dinner as tea!

In Scotland it’s a Fish Supper
Northern England - Chippy Tea (Tea aka dinner from the Chippy aka Fish and Chip Shop)

Comefromaway · 21/03/2021 17:50

It’s a chippy tea because we eat it at teatime (Friday is traditional). The workers used to get their pay packet on a Friday so could afford a chippy tea.
