Everyone is fawning over it! I watched it last night and thought it was absolutely rubbish, reused the same old exhausted tropes that every disaster movie uses and was really oddly paced.

Seriously though, please can we have a disaster movie where the family aren't estranged and the kid isn't forced to have a medical condition just to advance the plot?!

Deep water horizon is brilliant but yes sad.
Deep impact much better than armageddon.
The tunnel, volcano one with Pierce Brosnan. Tommy lee Jones volcano one.
There's a foreign tsunami one that was good.

Plonque · 09/02/2021 18:39

The tunnel Daylight? With sly Stallone ? Loved that one!*

Volcano one Dante's peak, another favourite in this house.

Tommy lee volcano it's called Volcano, I had to look it up but recognised it immediately - I used to love that film and had forgotten about its existence! Will rewatch if I can find it on anything.

Tsunami* only one I can think of is Impossible about the Boxing Day tsunami. It took me a while to pluck up the courage to watch this after it came out. Makes me feel sick to think what those people really went through.

Plonque · 09/02/2021 18:40

Weird bold fail, wasn't like that when I wrote it 🤦🏽‍♀️

MadameButterface · 09/02/2021 18:48

Any other recommendations

not an end of the world/disease film, but Skyscraper is jolly good fun.

ilovebagpuss · 09/02/2021 19:35

Any other recommendations

2012 is quite terrible but has some good effects. My DH cannot watch this it makes me laugh so much he can take so much science bullshit and then in this the land masses suddenly shift around which makes it easier for our heroes to get to the arks. It was like the last straw for him ha! I’m chuckling now.
Into The Storm - Tornados And the Dwarf King from The Hobbit
Geostorm - terrible but entertaining

I think we need more outbreak/contagion type films.

Itsmainingren · 09/02/2021 19:36

Independence day is good. I think it kick started the genre but may be wrong there.

Yes I love the old action hero's/films! Cliffhanger (?) is good too.

ha ha I'm going to rewatch one of these tonight. Another good TLJ (non end of the world one though) is double jeopardy.

no it's not the one. I find real true ones less enjoyable.
It's not an English film

wowier · 09/02/2021 19:43

Just googled it's The Wave/Bolgen.

LemonDrizzles · 09/02/2021 19:55

I just left my brain at the door and enjoyed the ride. So many annoyances and implausibilities but I did enjoy this movie.

catgirl1976 · 09/02/2021 20:03

I liked it

I was expecting it to be a bit of a silly action film which it was so I wasn't expecting a lot and it was good for the genre. I wasn't expecting anything deep or mind blowing. It was entertaining and quite tense in places.

Plonque · 09/02/2021 20:25

Wowier, I've just found this on Prime, is this The Tunnel you were talking about? Ive never heard of it but it's going to be tonight's viewing so I'll report back on it's cheesiness. It's a Norwegian film.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

I think there were some wolves there, there was also a library in NY where they had to burn books and that somehow stopped the cold.

But I might well be conflating two different films. At least I'm certain there were no zombies involved.

That's the Day After Tomorrow 😁

I meant Daylight (I'm shit with names), old film.
But that looks good! I will add to my list

Plonque · 09/02/2021 22:36

The Tunnel was really good! Not an ounce of Hollywood brashness about it, a gripping, serious (but in a good way) disaster film. Would recommend 👌🏽

wowier · 10/02/2021 00:16

thanks for the heads up

Pumpkinstace · 10/02/2021 00:38

Flood was amazing.

There is a guy who goes though hell in the flood water and then at the end he finds this wife and there is a scene of them hugging and he's got fresh white out the box trainers on.

Pumpkinstace · 10/02/2021 00:39

Prize for most stupid 'so bad it's good' film is...
The Core.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 10/02/2021 09:25

The Core was brilliant in that respect.

We watched it all one Christmas and I remember thinking I must have had too much to drink at lunch, because none of it made sense.

It was a great laugh though.

MustardMitt · 10/02/2021 10:29

The most offensive part was that Holt McCallany was (presumably) released from his Mindhunter contract to make this instead.

Travesty.

We said the same thing Grin

All he did was fat shame Gerard B before he got on the plane and then crashed it Grin

dudsville · 10/02/2021 17:34

We just saw it so I looked up this thread - isn't there a lot of misunderstanding about the Americans? They were trying to get to Greenland, but it wasn't only Americans that survived, nothing to indicate they were the only ones at the Greenland site, and there were other site around the world, India, etc., Our question was by what tech were they all communicating at the end? And yes like pp's are saying, their poor son was going to die either way.

It left us talking about whether we'd try to go or not. Have your seen a film called something like "Someone to spend the end of the world with"? That was brilliant and we both thought we'd rather do that! Put on some music...

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 10/02/2021 17:38

Thanks to the poster(s) who recommended 3 Billboards, we watched it last night and really enjoyed it.

they had that wacky landing because the plane was too heavy, that poor man DIED because of Gerard butler and his dad bod.

Based on this thread I've found myself a different disaster movie to watch each night this week! I quite enjoy a Gerard Butler film...Couple of true life ones too though, so not all easy watches, The Impossible being one of them. I cried a lot during that one. Now watching San Andreas.
