Everyone is fawning over it! I watched it last night and thought it was absolutely rubbish, reused the same old exhausted tropes that every disaster movie uses and was really oddly paced.

Seriously though, please can we have a disaster movie where the family aren't estranged and the kid isn't forced to have a medical condition just to advance the plot?!

Me too Mary - I watched San Andreas last night also. I actually quite enjoyed its daft self. But then, I am a bit soft on The Rock... Grin

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 11/02/2021 09:02

The Rock was great, one of my favourite films ever.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 11/02/2021 09:03

Oh sorry, you are talking about the Rock the person, not The Rock the movie with Nicolas Cage.

TastyTicklemore · 11/02/2021 09:06

I was!

But I am also a fan of the movie - except the bit where Ed Harris dies (spoilers!!). Ed Harris looks 100% exactly like my Dad did at the same age and I find it most upsetting when he dies in movies.

TastyTicklemore · 11/02/2021 09:07

Actually, I've not watched The Rock in years. I feel a 90s Action Movie phase coming on Grin

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 11/02/2021 09:45

I just thought that GB, wife, child and her dad could've had a lovely last evening together, maybe a horse ride, bit of a BBQ, meaningful chats and then just snuggled up peacefully to be obliterated in their sleep....

Exactly! Her dads farm was gorgeous, with all that soft golden light and pancakes. Id have been off on that horse for a ride, spend the evening with my loved ones and then all die together. I don't think a disaster movie works unless you actually think they got the better end of the deal by living in the nasty underground bunker and then emerging into a barren landscape covered in ash with absolutely nothing left as opposed to dying surrounded by your loved ones in a beautiful place.

mumwon · 11/02/2021 09:49

many (of the cheap) disaster films have a sequence where the general (or senior person) is talking on the radio/computer/internet/mobile phone to the hero (usually telling them they are to late or they have to get somewhere which is impossible to get to) & the general is standing behind about 2 or 3 staff on computers only one of whom has a speaking part.
I am sure that they use this sequence with the same cast in many films (I always try to spot this bit!)

mumwon · 11/02/2021 09:53

re good death
"On the beach" either the original or look on you tube for the later version
made in 2000 (nb it is in several parts but it is worth watching

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/02/2021 09:58

I read On The Beach recently and found it implausible the way NOBODY seemed to be building bunkers and trying to survive, they all just passively accepted their fate. This felt like the other extreme in a way.
I think like with covid there would probably be a lot of variety in how people respond- denial, prepping, passive obedience...

mumwon · 11/02/2021 12:15

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel
I think the idea was that the levels were so high &increasing that they would take centuries (millenniums?) to be liveable
If you watch the second film version on you tube they do show some refugees from N Australia (spoiler!)
But it is a weeper (I love it - I reread this & re-watched this recently) Acting is great
Has anybody noticed that they seem to be reading/watching more disaster films/books?

spoilers for Melancholia

they kind of do this a bit in that film, it's very relatable and sad and stayed with me in a way that disaster cheese (however much I enjoy it at the time) never will.

No, but I have started writing post apocalyptic fiction again which I haven't don't since maybe 2004 when I had an absolutely terrible year.

I have literally told everyone I know how crap this film is! My youngest lived it! It has also caused heated debates between myself and kids. I'm in the have one last great party then die camp. They would fight tooth and nail to get to a bunker but then they do have far longer left to possibly live than mee!

QuestionableMouse · 12/02/2021 20:48

I always wonder what would happen to all the pets then get really sad. 😭

There's no way I'd leave mine behind.

This is what I posted on another thread:

Anyone else seen Greenland? I'm just watching it on Prime. I love a disaster movie but this one has me genuinely terrified - not because of the comet which really takes a back seat but because of the cruel, desperate actions of ordinary people.

(sorry if I'm late to the party)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2021 00:01

I rather enjoyed it. I've felt starved of blockbuster type films and we went all out with popcorn and drinks tonight.

I did realise that quite sadly, I think I've lost the desire to be one of the survivors of an apocalypse recently.

Itscoldouthere · 14/02/2021 00:43

Watched it last night.
I thought it was terrible, DH fell asleep, I wish I had too. So many Netflix movies are just rubbish.

salsmum · 14/02/2021 02:25

Gerard Butler film... not good ??? On the naughty step poster 🤣🤣🤣

Icenii · 15/02/2021 18:46

Watched this last night. Much prefer Melancholia. That's worth a watch.

Do you think the atmosphere would be radioactive as all the nuclear power plants would be destroyed? Would the fires and winds stop that?

I'd have liked to have seen what happened when the asteroid / meteor hit the earth. Imagine of you were on the impact site. What would you see? Sorry. I've give this aot of thought and mapped out my plan of action based on different scenarios. Generally involves wine and not doing very much if an ELA. Zoombies I would try to fight.

knittingaddict · 16/02/2021 17:43

We watched it at the weekend and both thought it was a good film and well worth watching. It took a while before we came to that decision though.

There were various bits that just a bit too formulaic and had me rolling my eyes. The child with the illness and you could see that they would leave the medication behind as soon as it fell out of the bag. At times I felt like shouting at the screen "why are you doing that stupid thing".

However I loved the fact that it was mostly about people rather than action. The scenes of devastation were kept to a minimum and the nasty characters were balanced nicely by the kind, decent ones. To me it had a heart and I liked that.

knittingaddict · 16/02/2021 17:49

How did the child survive? They did not have enough insulin for 9 months tucked into GB's pants.

I'm sure they would have had a fully stocked drugs cupboard and medical equipment in the bunker. They could probably do surgery if they had to.

blue25 · 16/02/2021 17:49

It’s an awful film!

I’m sure we will find out in Greenland 2 , or G2 as I’m sure it is already being promoted as. Let’s face it, that ending was a total setup for a sequel and I imagine GB isn’t exactly inundated with work atm as the roles for actors who can’t maintain accents from one scene to the other are a bit thin on the ground.

Plot possibilities for G2 .

They discover that there is only one colony of bees left in the world and only one person brave enough to return to the US to find them.

They discover that there is only one source of insulin left in the world and only one person brave enough to return to the US to find it.

They discover that there is only one xxxxxx of xxxxxxx left in the world and there is only one person brave enough to travel to Australia to find it.

(Obviously plot three is dependant on Australian film funding.)

They discover a hitherto unknown colony of humans living in deep underground caves under Greenland. Fortunately this colony of humans has evolved the ability to produce insulin (as well as other useful technologies) . But they are understandably a bit hostile , and there is only one person brave and intuitive enough to contact them , inexplicably manage to communicate with them and make them see reason. Double plot twist, turns out they aren’t humans but aliens from the same solar system as the comet things, coincidence or what !!

I was a bit annoyed they didn’t have a cute dog. Maybe something for the producers/scriptwriters to think about for G2.

knittingaddict · 17/02/2021 13:16

The accent was laughable. It took me till about 3/4 of the way through before I realised he was doing a Scottish accent. I didn't even notice for most of the film. Very odd.

RedPaperLantern · 17/02/2021 13:47

He is Scottish tho’?
