Can we list the inconsistencies in F.R.I.E.N.D.S just for funsies?

I know it’s probably been done many times before but I’ve just noticed one I can’t believe I hadn’t seen before!

  • when Joey is about to act in the war film with Gary Oldman, Phoebe doesn’t know who they fought in WW1 but in the Thanksgiving episode she was a nurse in the same war in a previous life.

So she would have known they fought the Germans!

Where does the window in Monica’s kitchen go? There’s a hallway outside?

ceeveebee · 07/02/2021 11:12

When Rachel comes to central perk in her wedding dress in episode one, she doesn’t seem to know Chandler but then in later flashback episodes she has met him lots of times

Birthdays annoys me every time

Where does the window in Monica’s kitchen go?

I can’t believe I never noticed. It’s true, unless the building has some weird shape where it looks out on the outside wall of that hallway, but no that’s daft.

Jack Geller tells Chandler that when he started dating Judy, he was unemployed, but told her parents he was a lawyer. Then says to Chandler, 'If you ever see me giving them legal advice just nod along'.

But nana died in Season One (Judy's mother) and I'm fairly certain her father was dead too, so why would he give legal advice to the dead 🤔.

NoddyHoldersCrazee · 07/02/2021 11:33

Yes, also Jack says at one point that they had to get married because Judy was pregnant (the dog chewed her diaphragm) but then in another episode they said they thought she was ‘barren’ and that Ross was a medical miracle

SmidgenofaPigeon · 07/02/2021 11:33

Ross forgot when he lost his virginity didn’t he?

And Rachel was pregnant for AGES, longer than nine months.

Phoebe gave birth to triplets with a with about three scrunch-face pushes and voila!

BaggoMcoys · 07/02/2021 11:34

I am never sure if I have imagined this but I think there are two different episodes where Chandler and Monica say "I love you" for the first time (or where Chandler says it to Monica). One is when she has a turkey on her head, but I'm sure there was another one. Can anyone remember?

That's it! I am not sure which came first, the turkey episode or the one where everyone finds out, but I'm pretty sure that both times it's a huge surprise/focus of the episode for Monica to hear that Chandler loves her!

ChelseaCat · 07/02/2021 11:37

@BaggoMcoys - I was going to say the same thing! The other one is when Phoebe is trying to seduce Chandler

ChelseaCat · 07/02/2021 11:38

Damn, too slow!!

WeAllHaveWings · 07/02/2021 11:38

@Thebeginning10

the kitchen window is angled away from the hallway, so is the hallway window, so its like a V in building
JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 07/02/2021 11:38

Phoebe's vaginal birth to triplets in the American health system always makes me laugh!

Yes to Rachel and Chandler never having met and then having met lots of times, and having even snogged.

Carol in the first episode being a completely different actress to carol in the rest of the series.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 07/02/2021 11:40

So Rachel finds out she’s pregnant at Monica and chandler’s wedding which is may 15th. So would have been like four weeks? Five? At Thanksgiving she’s still pregnant but not really showing.
She should have been due in January or so but when she goes into labour they’re all banging on about the heat, so I guess it’s a New York summer...? Which means she was pregnant for fourteen months 😂

BaggoMcoys · 07/02/2021 11:40

And the general character developments don't make sense. They all become extreme caricatures of themselves - perhaps it's least bad for Rachel - but the others seem to go backwards in their character development rather than progressing as people. I think Friends lost its way after series 4, though I still enjoy the later episodes.

BaggoMcoys · 07/02/2021 11:44

Phoebe the woman who felt guilty that she got free money from the bank or compensation from a drink with a thumb in it, becomes heartless and mean. Joey becomes unbelievably dumb and love sick. Chandler suddenly can't smile. Monica loses nearly all the aspects of her personality except "clean freak". I'm not sure about Ross. He does change into something stupid but I don't know how to describe it.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 07/02/2021 11:46

Ooh and they always said joey was the youngest but Rachel is the last to turn 30 (and has a totally ridiculous existential crisis about it!)

Sleepyquest · 07/02/2021 11:49

The birthday thing annoys me. Why didn't the creators/writers have all these important character points noted down somewhere to refer to?

TheChosenTwo · 07/02/2021 11:50

Chandler and Monica’s baby birth mum expecting twins and no one having any idea until they came out. Ridiculous.

BuffaloCauliflower · 07/02/2021 11:51

@BaggoMcoys no that’s not quite right, the thanksgiving episode is when they say I love you to each other, but the episode where Chandler says ‘I love Monica’ to the others, it’s not a surprise to Monica it’s just a surprise to the others. Phoebe says ‘I just thought you guys were doing it, I didn’t know you were in love’. Monica isn’t surprised he’s said it, it not the first time to her.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 07/02/2021 11:52

Yes, that drives me nuts!
RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 07/02/2021 11:52

It’s true that Phoebe’s character is inconsistent. She is portrayed as a free progressive spirit but she reinforces gender stereotypes all the time by chastising the men for not being manly enough.

It doesn’t make sense!

Most of mine revolve around the Gellers...

Apparently, they have a lot of anniversary parties/birthday bashes as Monica moans that Ross does the toast every year. Yet Richard didn't recognise Monica when she came to cater for his party. If he is Jack's mate, surely he would have seen her at some point at one of their do's?

Agree 're dead/alive grandparents

Gellers pretending to their friends that Ross and Rachel got married, just made NO sense.

Chandler randomly scared of dogs for 1 episode.

Monica and Rachel not knowing Richard's son when they first see him (they must have been all around same age/from same area)

One of Rachel's sisters owns a ski cabin early on, later both of them are too feckless to own anything!

Phoebe's birth mum and dad both disappeared again

As does Ben!

And Rachel spends a lot of time not minding Emma when they live with Joey

ballsdeep · 07/02/2021 11:56

In the one where Monica opens the wedding presents, the camera bagel keeps changing and the present is wrapped in some shots and unwrapped in others.

They really did have shoddy work for such a huge sshow
