Aged 39, I've just ordered my first ever takeaway.

To be delivered. Never ever done it before. But got sick of cooking myself and miss eating out. It arrived in 9 minutes! So impressed. (It was Nando's!)

Dictionary definition of takeaway. I’m baffled how people can think they can buy fish and chips and ‘take them away’, but it’s not a take away??

noun

  1. BRITISH
a restaurant or shop selling cooked food to be eaten elsewhere. "a fast-food takeaway"
TillyTopper · 05/02/2021 21:48

My Mum had her first ever takeaway a couple of weeks ago. She came to live with us and we have takeaway at least once a week. There was a bit of a problem about what is plain enough for Mum to eat... But she has first ever at 89 years old!

Tuscadero · 05/02/2021 21:50

what was her verdict, @TillyTopper?

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 05/02/2021 21:51

Baffled,you say?

DancingElephant · 05/02/2021 21:57

Yes, @HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee, baffled. Dictionary definition is pretty clear. And of course you can get a takeaway delivered. But a delivery is not the only kind of takeaway.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 22:00

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee not quite sure how it can be a stealth boast.

Lol, how the other half live eh? 😂

MindfulBitch · 05/02/2021 22:01

Love a good Chinese. We have a lovely Chinese that we get probably once a week.

I couldn't replicate what they make! I could but it wouldn't be half as nice.

CloudPop · 05/02/2021 22:01

Surely fish & chips purchased wrapped in paper, taken home to eat, is a takeaway ?

MsRinky · 05/02/2021 22:06

@Porcupineintherough we have delivery robots here, order your takeaway or groceries and they trundle round to you, and are opened via your phone. I love them. www.starship.xyz/

Food From a chippy is a chippy tea.

Derbee · 05/02/2021 22:07

This thread makes me think of Uncle Bryn in Gavin & Stacey, being constantly amazed and blown await at really mundane everyday things that other people do all the time. 😂

Changemaname1 · 05/02/2021 22:09

There’s something kind of sweet bout this and the other poster saying they had their first ever takeaway last lockdown And really enjoyed it 🤷🏻‍♀️ my lazy ass gets them way to regular 😂😂

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 05/02/2021 22:09

I think it’s quite endearing too, first takeaway

NiceGerbil · 05/02/2021 22:12

It's really nice to have something new to discover!

Well happy for OP!

Even if it was a nandos...!

kurtrussellsbeard · 05/02/2021 22:13

Was it any good OP?

Flavabobble · 05/02/2021 22:17

I’ve been getting takeaways for the last 25 years or so.
But I’ve probably had more in the last year than the previous 24 combined 😊
Doesn't help that both kids quite often offer to pay

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 22:20

Yes. It was lovely, but should have ordered the 1/2 chicken. Had forgotten how good Nando's chicken tastes! And the custard yard was lovely. Though could be a bit bigger!

MrsCatE · 05/02/2021 22:24

More importantly, did your Cats enjoy it too?!

Bythemillpond · 05/02/2021 22:28

I am in my 50s and never ordered a takeaway that has been delivered to my door
Occasionally I would love to order a curry but for the last 35 years we have moved from different areas that don’t offer the service.
You can get a takeaway at the bottom of the road but not up our road.

diamondpony80 · 05/02/2021 22:37

I never ordered a takeaway until I was 18 and living away from home. My parents never did takeaway's or even eating out. We did live in the country though quite a few miles away from the nearest town. In university we got takeaway all the time and I've been getting at least one or two a month ever since. I'm impressed that you made it to 39 and never tried it!

As an aside, I did use a drive through for the first time last week at age 40. My 17 yr old DS couldn't believe I'd never done that before!

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 05/02/2021 22:38

Mmmm, I'd love a Nandos.
Unfortunately we don't have one in the County let alone the town. 😢
I think we ordered a Domino's a couple of years ago but haven't had a delivery since then. If I don't want to cook I'll just pick up a ready meal from Sainsbury's.

lazylinguist · 05/02/2021 23:01

A takeaway is phone or online and not face to face

What, so if I decide I fancy a curry and pop into the Indian restaurant on the way home and take it home to eat, it's not not a takeaway, but if I phone from home to order it and then go and pick it up from the same restaurant, it is a takeaway? Grin Utter nonsense. Besides, if I phone and then go and pick it up, I'm still 'face to face' when I pick it up! Confused

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 23:02

@MrsCatE they were both very interested and I got the big eyes, but I didn't want to risk the spice. Especially as Cheddar has a very sensitive tummy!

Nonsense is your fatuous use of emoji GrinSmile to support a weak point
