Aged 39, I've just ordered my first ever takeaway.

To be delivered. Never ever done it before. But got sick of cooking myself and miss eating out. It arrived in 9 minutes! So impressed. (It was Nando's!)

Aw, I really like this! We could never afford takeaway when I was growing up. We only managed a restaurant meal once before I was 18!

It wasn't until I was living away doing my MA that I suddenly realised I could! I ordered a big fancy pizza from a local Italian place, and was amazed that they also offered wine! Grin I called my parents afterwards and everything!

One of the last things I did with my Dad was order an Indian takeaway. He was chuffed. Couldn't get over the size of the prawns! 😂

Glad you enjoyed, OP!

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee Just because you personally define a takeaway as only a delivery, that doesn’t make it fact. Seemingly everyone else, and the dictionary, define food taken away to eat elsewhere as a takeaway, so a chippy tea is a takeaway. A McDonalds is a takeaway. A Greggs is a takeaway. And a pizza ordered online to be delivered is also a takeaway.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 05/02/2021 23:44

If that’s how it is in your world, own it,proclaim Greggs to be a takeaway

DancingElephant · 05/02/2021 23:59

I’ll refer you to the pasty tax debacle of 2012. Greggs is definitely a takeaway.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 00:07

Yes in spirit of digressionI do like a good legal food battle, Jaffa cake were indeed recognised as a cake 1991 mcvitie vs customs & excise

QueenPawPaws · 06/02/2021 00:36

I had a delicious burger with chips and chicken strips tonight. Delivery as they cook from a trailer so you can't collect
It amazes me that I can get pretty much any food delivered, roast dinners, cakes, sweets, ice cream, doughnuts, Thai...
this is part of the burger menu

I’m 43 and didn’t get a takeaway until 30, a delivery until 38 and didn’t go through a drive-through until I was 36.

My parents wouldn’t let us have Macdonald’s or similar as kids because they thought it was too expensive. Old habits die hard!

I agree with this definition of a takeaway. But I do think “ordering” a takeaway is different to “getting” a takeaway. “Getting” could mean either in person or over the phone/internet, whereas “ordering” is only by phone/internet. And the OP talked about ordering.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/02/2021 11:40

My dad hated going to McDonalds when I was a kid. Now my parents practically live on their coffee.

When I took my DDad to Macdonalds (just opened in town 1982) he couldn’t grasp the concept at all!! Didn’t understand why there wasn’t ‘proper’ knives and forks, and where was the gravy?🤣
Said we were all getting ‘conned’ as the customers get to all the work!! He had a point, I guess....

amusedbush · 06/02/2021 12:55

My parents didn’t have a lot of money when we were young so a takeaway was a very occasional Chinese when my dad won something on his Saturday coupon. He would always go and collect it. They never took us to McDonald’s - even when we begged to grab something at the drive-thru, they would moan about the quality of the speaker/ordering system and refuse.

I didn’t get a Domino’s pizza until I was 19.

willowstar · 06/02/2021 15:08

We have takeaway reasonably regularly but we live rurally so only one place delivers. We had our first ever delivery during lockdown 1...a pizza for the children...they were beside themselves with excitement.

kowari · 06/02/2021 15:18

I didn't start getting takeaways until I was 35. We didn't have them growing up, we had chips from the fish and chip van/shop occasionally. My dad was very careful with money. Then I couldn't afford them as a sole parent when DS was primary age and younger.

kowari · 06/02/2021 15:19

Takeaways delivered I mean.

kowari · 06/02/2021 15:25

I do think there is a difference between getting chips and getting a takeaway delivered that costs at least £10 per person. That was the cost of my weekly grocery shop when we were poor.

jules0607 · 06/02/2021 18:22

Never had take aways growing up - parents couldn’t afford them. Never had take aways when my son was growing - couldn’t afford them. Now maybe could afford a take away or delivery now & again now, why would I? Hardly a ‘posh’ brag..

Theoldwrinkley · 06/02/2021 18:33

Be proud that you accomplished a ‘new’ ability.
I used to be confident, outgoing person. But then had horrible illness and all my confidence disappeared.
I can now drive (but only automatics) again. I’ve owned a car since 2013, (since 1978 before that) and had to fill up with fuel yesterday. I’ve always managed to suggest that hubby fills it up when he’s out! Was really shitting myself over such an easy, trivial thing that I never used to give a second thought to. But I did it! So proud of myself! Lady in Tesco somewhat dumbfounded when woman in tears of relief paid.....she couldn’t believe I felt it a great achievement!

SnotLongTilEaster · 06/02/2021 18:41

Good on you. Welcome to the dark side. My takeaway tips are:

don’t order pizza! Although it is nice, you don’t get much for your money. A nice Chinese or Indian is cheaper and more filling.

Order straight from the restaurant, rather than through just eat or Uber etc. You get things cheaper going direct.

Many restaurants/cafes who weren’t delivering are doing deliveries now due to the lockdown. So check with your favourite places as you may be able to order from them even if they don’t normally deliver.

JFM27 · 06/02/2021 18:47

Never had a takeaway and im way older than you.i live alone and rustling up a pasta dish or omlette is quick and easy, why wouid anyone waste money on takeaways full of E numbers and god knows what else.Hate curry anyway not mad on chinese and i can get a pizza base if i need to do one of those. So no i wont be having takeaways i like to know exactly what im eating.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/02/2021 18:51

The takeaway place I want isn't currently accepting orders! I might DIE!!!

Drops to the floor, wails and sobs dramatically.

Galdos · 06/02/2021 19:04

Personally I order maybe 2 takeaways a year ... but the three kids (one working) will order 2 - 3 times a week (I decline to participate). Seems to be a generational thing - takeaways barely existed when I was growing up (fish and chips, basically)so the habit was never formed. The kids though ...Different world.

DavidsSchitt · 06/02/2021 19:09

It's a bit sad that your first delivery was Nando's and I like them!!

What's next OP?

Covidcorvid · 06/02/2021 19:34

I’ve never had a Nando’s in my life. 🤷‍♀️ I’d happily have one delivered if they did delivery,to me.

honeybee88 · 06/02/2021 20:11

@Crystal905@ nope...we do t all order out all the time! Once a month perhaps thats all.

honeybee88 · 06/02/2021 20:12
