What TV programmes scared you as a kid?

Just as the title asks, what TV programmes scared you as a kid? I'll get the ball rolling. I'm an 80s child and I hated Doctor who. The music was terrifying and I had to leave the room. I also hated he-man. Especially when he shouts 'I have the power' in the opening credits. Bag puss also frightened me. A very large pink cat was unnatural!

I read your post and immediately thought of hiding behind the couch at Dr Who.

Always loved Bagpuss though.

FrankGrillosFloof · 01/02/2021 20:29

Sorry, I meant read your question and thought of Dr Who before reading your post.

Jedstre · 01/02/2021 20:31

Yes, Dr Who for me too and Rod Hull and Emu. Funny but there’s nothing that has made my children hide behind the sofa like that.

Jim 'll fix it

He put the fear of god into me that Savile. My skin used to crawl seeing him on TV.

Chorlton and The Wheelies was very strange.

Those Eastern European animations which were in strange, muted colours and were very creepy.

The public information films designed to warn children about electricity pylons, water, fridges and strangers.

StepOutOfLine · 01/02/2021 20:33

Dr Who, but it was a delicious kind of fear.

There was a creepy Czech fairytale thing that gave me the heebs. Involved a great big talking fish stuck in some ice.

Tottie (the BBC serialisation of Rumer Godden's novel). The ending was faithful to the book and both are unbelievably gothic for something aimed at primary school-aged children.

I agree about Bagpuss - not so much him but the general atmosphere of him being on his last legs and everyone going to sleep and sepia when he did. I bought them on DVD a few years ago and still haven't plucked up the courage to watch them!

There was also a very sinister dubbed series called Oscar, Kina and the Laser - about a boy, a goose and a laser, with kidnappings etc.

Jigsaw - the scariness of Nosey Bonk - need I say more!

Don't have nightmares, do sleep well. Wink

LostFrog · 01/02/2021 20:34

Worzel Gummidge. Ugh.

LindaEllen · 01/02/2021 20:35

I couldn't watch Jonathan Creek. I love detective shows but there was always an air of creepiness about how people died in that one.

JumpOnAPlane · 01/02/2021 20:36

Dr Who for me too - the music scared the hell out of me at the time.

Nowadays I just love Dr Who and can't get enough of it!Wink

Blessex · 01/02/2021 20:36

Dr Who without a doubt. Terrifying.

LostFrog · 01/02/2021 20:37

YABVU about Bagpuss though

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/02/2021 20:38

Oh yes Tottie. Oliver Postgate did some really weird stuff.

And the kids version of Survivors, Changes (must get the books again)

Catweasel... Bloody terrified me!

HotCupOfNo · 01/02/2021 20:39

The magic roundabout.

Creepy. As. Fuck.

DoctorYang · 01/02/2021 20:40

Chocky

Imissthegym · 01/02/2021 20:40

Tottie terrified me. I can remember it vividly now.
Plus the wheelers from return to oz.

MurunB · 01/02/2021 20:42

The Moomins. Not the cartoon version, but the gloomy felt stop-animation. Even pictures from that series can make me feel a bit funny.

LetterFromLorah · 01/02/2021 20:42

Orme and Cheap
Moondial
Breakfast Serials (does anyone else remember this one?)

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 01/02/2021 20:42

Tales of the Unexpected- I remember watching one about a someone who discovered that plants scream when you cut them and it scared the beejesus out of me.

billybagpuss · 01/02/2021 20:43

There’s nothing scary about the Bagpuss 😂

There was a particular episode of dr who filmed at Avebury stone circle and it scared me witless.

bettyshotspot · 01/02/2021 20:43

Dr Who, Worzel Gummidge (when he changed his head!) and The Tripods (also 70's/80's child) Demon headmaster was a bit creepy and grotbags was angry at times lol. I was mesmerised by chocky and box of delights, a little scary but good tv.

BeautifulStar · 01/02/2021 20:43

Effing hell I’ve just googled nosey bonk WTF is that???!!

billybagpuss · 01/02/2021 20:43

God I remember that one, and a weird game where a bloke collected fingers in exchange for expensive stuff
LetterFromLorah · 01/02/2021 20:44

Sorry, Orme and Cheep that should be!
