What TV programmes scared you as a kid?

Just as the title asks, what TV programmes scared you as a kid? I'll get the ball rolling. I'm an 80s child and I hated Doctor who. The music was terrifying and I had to leave the room. I also hated he-man. Especially when he shouts 'I have the power' in the opening credits. Bag puss also frightened me. A very large pink cat was unnatural!

The Phoenix and the Carpet was a bit creepy too.

@letsgomaths

Not a TV programme, but the song "The Laughing Policeman" on the All Aboard record.
Oh, yes - The Laughing Policeman is up there with The Teddy Bears' Picnic and The Runaway Train. I used to hide upstairs if they came on Children's Choice on Saturday mornings.

I agree about the safety videos, I can still remember the scream from the pylon one!

I hated Worzel Gummidge and when I was 11 ish that Ghost Watch programme scared the hell out of me!

Interweb · 01/02/2021 21:05

Chorlton and the Wheelies - mainly the cackling witch

Willow the wisp - creepy fucker with a big pointy nose, and that evil TV

The Moomins - think it was their big starey eyes that freaked me out

Rainyday26 · 01/02/2021 21:05

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is an all time favourite, but the Child catcher still scares me 50 odd years later !

Dr Who - not the programme just the swirly titles and scary music - I used to hide behind the sofa !

HyggeHeart · 01/02/2021 21:06

Come back Lucy. Terrified me for long after it finished!!

abstractzebra · 01/02/2021 21:06

I seem to remember a lot of dubbed over programmes. Maybe Austrian? Sad looking kids with dogs etc.
I remember being disappointed when they came on as we only had 3 channels and no other devices to entertain. You'd have to go and read a book or something instead! Shock

Does anyone remember the very dreamlike "Alphaquest" sequence on Sesame Street? A girl would open a door with a letter of the alphabet, and find lots of things beginning with that letter. I used to find this really creepy, almost scary; but I think it was mostly the way that she was superimposed on a cartoon background. For instance, when she opened the "S" door, she found herself in the sea.

NannyR · 01/02/2021 21:25

The day of the triffids terrified me too, I remember being scared walking past gardens with tall plants. I just googled it and it was broadcast in 1981 so I would have only been 6 or 7, why on earth did my parents let me watch it???

augustusglupe · 01/02/2021 21:33

When Patrick Troughton was Dr Who. He terrified me. I was only about 4 or 5 and i remember if I was on my own in the Lounge when it was on, i'd sit there screaming until mum came and picked me up Grin

crimsonclover · 01/02/2021 21:33

The Incredible Hulk and Planet of the Apes.

tobee · 01/02/2021 21:38

My dd and I were just reminiscing about how she was terrified of Pippin the dog in Come Outside that was shown in her nursery class. She had special dispensation to leave the room. Grin

For some reason I was scared of The Goodies. Confused But I was a very frit child.

I was scared of most public information films but I regard that as totally normal.

Wishingwell75 · 01/02/2021 21:41

Yep Dr Who like others have said. But also The Clifton House was pretty spooky, there was a hidden room and maybe someone buried in the wall - but I could be mixing that up with something similar. Also, a film I was not supposed to watch about two kids living in Milton Keynes who runaway to London and the parents are searching for the daughter. Really scared me!

@DoctorYang

Chocky
I was equally scared and fascinated by Chocky! My sister and I feel like we are the only ones who remember it. We used to shine a torch on the wall and scare each other by saying “look it’s Chocky!”
orchidsonabudget · 01/02/2021 21:47

The public safety about not picking up sparklers
And pylons
Both terrified me
