What TV programmes scared you as a kid?

Just as the title asks, what TV programmes scared you as a kid? I'll get the ball rolling. I'm an 80s child and I hated Doctor who. The music was terrifying and I had to leave the room. I also hated he-man. Especially when he shouts 'I have the power' in the opening credits. Bag puss also frightened me. A very large pink cat was unnatural!

Tales of the unexpected used to spook me out, child of the 80s

"Don't make em like they used to...." Well thank fuck for that! Comforting to know you guys felt the same and I wasn't the only one although I feel bad for your trauma .

Anyone remember a series called Silas? It was on in the mornings in the holidays, and was dubbed from Romanian or similar. Was about a boy who rode horses in a circus. He ran away because he didn't want to become a sword swallower. He teamed up with a blind girl and another boy, and for some reason they had to keep running away from an old witch. Somehow the witch ended up getting strangled on a waterwheel??

Scared the crap out of me!

Jane Eyre which was one of the sunday tea time serials in the 1980's. It was Mrs Reads big long nose and Berthas mad laugh. I can see Mrs Read lying in bed now and still get shivers thinking of Bertha's laugh. I have never been able to watch another adaptation of Jane Eyre since. My brother was really scared of the boy from space which was part of loom and read schools program. I remember hearing him screaming with fear at school!

Opticabbage · 04/02/2021 23:15

@letsgomaths

Not a TV programme, but the song "The Laughing Policeman" on the All Aboard record.
Oh no, I've been playing the cd version of this record to my 2 year old.. hope he's not traumatised Grin I loved it as a kid!
SophieGiroux · 04/02/2021 23:27

Dark Towers and The Boy From Space - both watched at school in the "haunted" tv block!!
Also watching casualty in the 80's being far too young and being terrified to sleep after watching an episode with a horrific rta

GreenPlum · 04/02/2021 23:43

The child catcher from Chitty

The triffids

Ghostwatch WTF My friends and I had all been out but I went home early and was the only one to have watched it. Never had anybody to talk to about it!

And there was this awful thing with a talking shaking plant thing. At the end the contestants had to get across this grid in space and if they failed they fell and drifted off into space. I thought they would float around until they died 😳 traumatised for years!

SophieGiroux · 04/02/2021 23:45

@GlittercheeksOakleaf

Dr Who. I can still picture Bonnie Langford being captured and held in a net although I'm not actually sure if it happened. The whole thing scared the living shit out of me.
@GlittercheeksOakleaf yes I remember this one it was called "Paradise Towers" with Sylvester McCoy as Dr Who. It was the only Dr Who series I liked!!
Takeitonthechin · 04/02/2021 23:46

Anyone remember Armchair Thriller?

Artesia · 05/02/2021 00:05

@GreenPlum -that was TheAdventure Game! The grid they crossed was the Vortex, and the plant was called Rangdo. I LOVED that show!

GreenPlum · 05/02/2021 00:11

OMG I've just done a Google images search! I'm going to have nightmares!

tinylittleyou · 05/02/2021 00:15

Zzzap (mid 90s) weird silent comic book show with weird characters including disembodied hands in odd rubber gloves making things on a stage. There was just something creepy about it!

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 05/02/2021 00:22

Armchair Thriller esp the one with the nun. Found them on DVD recently so it's been good to rewatch them.

kissmelittleass · 05/02/2021 00:22

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 05/02/2021 00:23

The Adventure Game is now on Britbox. Looking forward to watching that again.

Teddy1970 · 05/02/2021 00:25

I remember a film about a blonde bloke in a coma, his eyes were open all the time just staring straight ahead, it was terrifying, I can't think for the life of me what it was called but I'm sure Susan George was a nurse in it.

Miljea · 05/02/2021 00:43

What was the theme thing with a figure rising up out of a musical box with triangular flaps that opened to reveal that figure? Another figure turned a handle, or winch to make this person rise up out of the musical box? Was it something related to Watch with Mother, or Trumpton/Candlewick Green?

ConfusedcomMum · 05/02/2021 00:51

The Incredible Hulk.

caringcarer · 05/02/2021 01:21

Dr Who terrified me. My Mum always made my older sister switch TV over.

GlittercheeksOakleaf · 05/02/2021 05:19

@SophieGiroux Thank you! Relieved to know I wasn't imagining it, that video wasn't quite as scary as I remember though.

BasiliskStare · 05/02/2021 05:34

Yes yes @ssd & @cortex10 The Singing Ringing tree . WTF was all that about for children's viewing?
