What TV programmes scared you as a kid?

Just as the title asks, what TV programmes scared you as a kid? I'll get the ball rolling. I'm an 80s child and I hated Doctor who. The music was terrifying and I had to leave the room. I also hated he-man. Especially when he shouts 'I have the power' in the opening credits. Bag puss also frightened me. A very large pink cat was unnatural!

The demon headmaster definitely gave me nightmares when i was young (6ish) still watched it religiously ha.

Not a series but the film Watership Down-school brought the tv on wheels out for a christmas treat! Terrifying.
I saw DP has it on his netflicks list for Dd aged 9- on questioning him he thought it was a film about fluffy bunnies.....

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/02/2021 12:25

Dr Who (Tom Baker era) for me.
DS was terrified by the spoon in Numberjacks.

@MurunB

The Moomins. Not the cartoon version, but the gloomy felt stop-animation. Even pictures from that series can make me feel a bit funny.
Same, absolutely hideous show.

It still freaks me out just thinking about it

We had a B/W TV so Bagpuss being pink was a huge surprise to me.

The Fire in Jane Eyre was one that I remember.

The (70s version) Famous Five looked terribly violent Grin

I had to be taken out of the cinema during Bedknobs and Broomsticks (the football scene) as I was so scared.

I was easily scared. Grin

Darklane · 02/02/2021 12:40

Quatermass. Used to hide behind the sofa.

@RamsayBoltonsConscience

Tales of the Unexpected- I remember watching one about a someone who discovered that plants scream when you cut them and it scared the beejesus out of me.
Tales of the Unexpected are repeated every day on I think Sky Arts. I watch them quite regularly and they are still spooky!
dinot · 02/02/2021 12:44

The Boy From Space - why? Just why would you do that to kids?

Squirrel26 · 02/02/2021 12:45

The cartoon version of Dungeons and Dragons - there was an episode where a child put his foot over the side of the bed and found himself sucked into whatever magical world they were supposed to be in and to this day I maintain that it is NOT SAFE to have a foot outside the duvet.

Also Captain Black from Captain Scarlet, because he was dead.

@Wishingwell75

Yep Dr Who like others have said. But also The Clifton House was pretty spooky, there was a hidden room and maybe someone buried in the wall - but I could be mixing that up with something similar. Also, a film I was not supposed to watch about two kids living in Milton Keynes who runaway to London and the parents are searching for the daughter. Really scared me!
My first thought was "The Clifton House Mystery"! I was real hard core and used to read tons of ghost stories with grim relish but this scared the chuffing crap out of me Grin

The ghostly face in the helmet, the secret room with the skeleton in the bed... all pales in the face of that frickin tune the music box used to play. I've never forgotten it and found an excerpt from the series on vimeo. Hearing the dad playing it on the piano - not that he means to, oh no - my hair was trying to stand on end 😱

JMAngel1 · 02/02/2021 12:48

Daleks in Dr Who - I can vividly remember crawling behind the sofa
Choccy - I loved it but God it was scary
The theme tune of Tales of the Unexpected. Never allowed to watch it but I could hear it from my bedroom and I would be in hysterics.

BrownFootStool · 02/02/2021 13:20

@LetterFromLorah I can hardly remember now. I used to think it was called 'Orman Cheep' and that was the name of the bird.

BrownFootStool · 02/02/2021 13:20

A terrifying Disney film called 'The Water in the Woods' where a bell falls on a girl and she vanishes, then there is a creepy presence in the woods which possesses people! Terrified me for ages.

skoobysnax · 02/02/2021 13:22

Sapphire and Steel

TheFogsGettingThicker · 02/02/2021 13:24

The Clifton House Mystery!

Jesus, it was petrifying. Three times I saw it, and three times I ended up cowering behind the sofa, particularly at the bit when the creepy music box music starts playing and the sounds of the Bristol Riots... Shock

I enjoyed Rent-A-Ghost and the The Ghosts of Motley Hall, but Clifton House seemed far more real!

Claricethecat45 · 02/02/2021 14:09

A series set in Wales with a strict couple - very scary - and an aunt called Hepzibah...

I recall loving it but being terrified of the man; it was a war time evacuee story about a brother and sister being sent away and being re-homed with the scary man and his sister. Cant recall the name but it was essential Sunday night, after bath and hair wash viewing and it worried me all day knowing I was going to watch it!

NannyR · 02/02/2021 14:27

Claricethecat45 I think that was Carrie's War, I loved the book as a child but I don't think I watched it on tv.

Claricethecat45 · 02/02/2021 14:31

NannyR

Thats it! I am going way back here - late 60's - it was so good and I think my mother would have got the book for us to read also- I seem to remember she watched it too and liked it - prob as it was her era.

Thank you

Claricethecat45 · 02/02/2021 14:34

NannyR

Just looked on Youtube - it was 1974 - and think the full series is available at first glance - in film format

I will rematch it!

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/02/2021 14:34

Yes to Crimewatch. I remember one reconstruction where some scumbags poured petrol through a letterbox and lit a match. Bloody terrifying.

Also -

Hammer house of Horror
Armchair Thriller
The Boy from Space (TV schools Look and Read)

Lightsabre · 02/02/2021 14:36

I didn't like Raggety from Rupert the Bear.

ladymalfoy45 · 02/02/2021 14:39

The Tripods.
Doctor Who.
The Mad Death.
Rod Hull and Emu.
Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys.
The Mesmerist.
Seagull Island.
Some kids drama where a boy was being kidnapped and stuck in speedboat trying to let off a flare. He wore yellow.

Lightsabre · 02/02/2021 14:40

Sky Arts has just shown Royal Jelly on Tales of the Unexpected

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 02/02/2021 14:44

The Boy From Space

dino I was coming on to see if anyone had mentioned that! Absolutely terrifying.

Quirrelsotherface · 02/02/2021 14:53

The BBC adaption was one of the scariest, most atmospheric programmes I ever seen and has stuck with my all my life. I loved it but was terrified at the same time. A great ghost story.
