Lisa Montgomery was executed yesterday - I don’t know how this amounts to justice in 2021. What an appalling tragedy her life and death was.

What she did was absolutely heinous but when I read the account of her life I was aghast. In this country I think she would have ended up in a high security psychiatric facility and got the long overdue mental health treatment she needed. Utterly barbaric to execute her.

Bluntness100 · 13/01/2021 08:23

I think this is very sad.

Many people do heinous crimes, but I believe that she was indeed brain damaged and suffering severe mental health disorders as her legal team stated, because I don’t believe anyone would do what she did out of anything other than severely ill/mentally incapable

However I also think she must have been deemed fit to stand trial and to know the difference between right snd wrong.

Overall a very sad situation for all involved.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 13/01/2021 08:23

Look into most offenders you will find many abuse victims and mental health sufferers, Male and female. Justice isn't always happy or comfortable

RJnomore1 · 13/01/2021 08:27

I went to sleep having heard there was a stay of execution, shocked to hear this.

How does anyone involved in this live with themself? I agree about psychiatric care. That woman’s been let down by American society for 53 years (before she was born) and the blood of her and her victim are in their hands.

steppemum · 13/01/2021 08:29

When I heard about her life yesterday I wanted to cry.

Her sister was removed by social services, so SS knew that the family was a disaster and yet no-one ever removed Lisa, or even investigated.

I feel that she was a completely damaged person, failed by every single person who knew her.

Her crime was awful, breathtakingly shocking.
She should have been in a secure psychiatric unit, not executed.
there was talk of a reprieve yesterday, I am sorry it didn't work.

But then I am against the death penalty altogether.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2021 08:31

@Bluntness100, I'd be sceptical about how fair her trial was. The little I know about the US judicial system doesn't inspire confidence that poor and badly educated accused people get good or even adequate legal representation. (Not that I think that's guaranteed here either, sadly.)

Clymene · 13/01/2021 08:32

Trump's last notable action in office - to kill a terribly disturbed victim of abuse.

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 13/01/2021 08:34

Yes, it hideous that they murdered her.

What a terrible life for a human from start to finish. Cannot believe they still have the death penalty in America.

RIP to her victim and to her Sad

picklemewalnuts · 13/01/2021 08:34

The most appalling thing about this case was the rush to carry out her sentence for political reasons.

The debate about the death penalty has merit on both sides, but the rush to expedite her death smacks of spite and powerlust.

At least she is at peace now.

TheDrsDocMartens · 13/01/2021 08:35

There’s a few executions supposed to be going through this week. Biden is expected to stop the practice again.

CherryRoulade · 13/01/2021 08:36

Shocking but unsurprising given Trump has overseen so many federal executions and continues to do so during transition. America has lost its civilised society badge under his presidency.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 13/01/2021 08:36

I agree with all of the above. Her new lawyer was saying on radio 4 yesterday that her appalling childhood etc wasn't brought out in court so the jury, quite, quite wrongly, saw a sane, evil woman not the seriously damaged person she was. It's just the publicity the USA doesn't need after the Capitol riot

Arobase · 13/01/2021 08:37

I hate the fact that Trump is ordering all these people to be killed in such a rush essentially because he can and because it gives him a hard-on.. After last week, anything he orders should have been automatically put on hold.

PolloDePrimavera · 13/01/2021 08:37

I've been following this too the last few days. I remember the case as I was just pregnant with my DD but at the time, didn't know her back story. Reading that is horrific and doesn't in any way excuse the crime she committed but should make you question her state of mind. I'm not entirely anti the death penalty and would have supported it in very few cases (Ian Huntley, Peter Sutcliffe, Hindley and Brady etc) but part of me wonders how much she wanted to live still; she was being abused in prison apparently with no appropriate clothing and no privacy. I'm not supporting the DP in her case, I'm hoping she is at peace. And maybe, it has given some peace to Bobbie Jo Stinnett's family.

ssd · 13/01/2021 08:37

Awful story.

Knucklehead101 · 13/01/2021 08:38

Oh no. I thought send had a stay of execution. I can't believe this has happened.

Obviously her crime was hideous but so were the crimes committed against her. The system has failed everyone again

^^ this 😢
Isadora2007 · 13/01/2021 08:41

RIP Lisa. I hope the next world gives you more peace than this one. I don’t think her life should have been ended at the hands of “justice” system- but I don’t think her life would have been worth living either. Sounds like it never really was.
Obviously I am also heart sorry for Bobbie-Jo’s family and their immense loss.

So much this
Skipsurvey · 13/01/2021 08:43

shocking

IrisAtwood · 13/01/2021 08:44

RIP Lisa.

I am against the death penalty for any reason.

Lisa’s life and death were tragic. She was as much a victim as Bobbie Jo Stinnet the woman she murdered.

Killing a mentally ill person is not justice.

totally agree, and one of the reasons why they should have removed his powers using the section 21 or whatever it was.
JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 13/01/2021 08:47

"I'm not entirely anti the death penalty and would have supported it in very few cases (Ian Huntley, Peter Sutcliffe, Hindley and Brady etc)"

So because the newspapers sensationalised something for you, bring on the death penalty? Ridiculous.
