Lisa Montgomery was executed yesterday - I don’t know how this amounts to justice in 2021. What an appalling tragedy her life and death was.

I am against the death penalty in all circumstances.

echt · 13/01/2021 09:09

I am against capital punishment for all the reasons proponent say it's the right thing to do.

What is particularly disgusting about this is that it is personal spite, akin to sewing prawns into the curtains as he leaves the White House on the part of Trump.

He has killed a human being to make a point.

What a cunt.

Unfair to cunts, as they have depth and warmth. I know. I have one.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/01/2021 09:10

Once Trump lifted the stay on executions there was no way this woman was going to escape the death penalty!

The US just doesn't have the infrasructure, or the political will, to do anything other than punish when mentally ill people, poor people etc etc commit crimes. That this woman committed such a vile crime made it inevitable that she would be executed.

It will take a while before any changes are made. I hope that Biden is the beginning of a more tolerant US*... but it didn't respond to Obama very well, so maybe a bit longer than you'd like to hope!

*As a country, a political entity, not the individual people, cos I know there is a difference!

Viviennemary · 13/01/2021 09:11

I'm not against the death penalty for certain cases. Like Fred and Rose West, Hindley and Brady. And this latest one. Her crime was beyond horrific. I think it could be justified in her case.

Livelovebehappy · 13/01/2021 09:11

What she did was hideous, but when you see what sort of upbringing she had, and the trauma she suffered, you feel that she was a very damaged woman who must have had severe mental health issues. I’m an advocate of the death penalty, but I really think in this case she should have had the sentence reduced to life imprisonment with no parole. But then again, maybe death was a release for her as I imagine her mental suffering must have been horrendous.

Hmm
Moondust001 · 13/01/2021 09:13

Justice isn't always happy or comfortable

Nor is it always justice.

How can state condoned killing demonstrate that murder (or anything else) is wrong? "You did this, so we will do that" is not justice, it is revenge. No matter what someone does, not matter how much it scares or sickens us, the hallmark of a civilised society should be that we rise above their level and do better than them.

ncbby · 13/01/2021 09:14

Mixed feelings on this. On one hand I think if she suffered from mental illness and was non compos mentis at the time of the crime, then the execution is unjust as she had no other option than to do what she did.

Subsequently though, if someone ever hurt someone in my family and took their baby I would need that justice to be able to live with it. I don't know if that's right or not, but I think there needed to be some kind of closure for Stinnett's family.

Branleuse · 13/01/2021 09:14

Her whole life was awful and her crime was beyond hideous. I am not in favour of the death penalty but I dont see what benefit to having her incarcerated for life either. Hopefully she is at peace now

Are the cases of other less notorious murders less worthy of your judgement? The families of such victims might think differently.

Why is it worthy in LM's case?

Do explain.

Absolutely this.

Oreservoir · 13/01/2021 09:16

I’m appalled that anyone in 2021 could think a death penalty is ever justified.
Imo the US justice system is more about revenge than justice.

MorrisZapp · 13/01/2021 09:16

For anyone wondering if I'd feel the same if this was a man, yes I absolutely would. This lady had a stepfather who raped her repeatedly and pimped her out to his friends when she was a child. I don't know where that man is now, dead or in jail I suspect but I don't advocate the death penalty for him because I don't advocate it for anybody. That's what a principle is.

PegasusReturns · 13/01/2021 09:17

I can’t see the death penalty as justice - it is abhorrent and has no place in civilised society.

The issue with Lisa is she should never have been convicted - she was severely mentally ill as a result of decades of severe abuse.

Execution is never Justice

It's Revenge

cuddlymunchkin · 13/01/2021 09:19

Did you read what she did? The family of the victim should and we're listened to. She went out if her way to befriend the victim online - not a brief psychotic episode but a long, thought out campaign.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/01/2021 09:20

@JustAnotherUserinParadise

This lady's life was a real lesson in knowing the full story - I read the headline and one-paragraph summary and thought "wow that evil woman to do such a thing - maybe she deserves it". Then read the full article about her life, with the bits by her sister, and just felt so so sorry for her, she was literally failed by every single person who should have cared for her. It's hardly surprising she was so messed up.
Yes. I was exactly the same.
ancientgran · 13/01/2021 09:21

I'm against the death penalty for anyone, the USA are on a killing spree.

Phoebesgift · 13/01/2021 09:22

The death penalty has no place in a civilised society.

Shame on America.

Thurlow · 13/01/2021 09:23

@KaptainKaveman

There is an article about her in the Guardian this week. I read it not knowing what I was letting myself in for Sad, and couldn't believe how appalling her life was from start to finish. Her awful, abusive life was flagged up before the authorities - including Judges - but nothing was ever done.

I'm no psychiatrist but I think she was desperate to get hold of a baby she could love because nobody had ever loved her. What a terrible tragic waste.

Trump is vile.

I read that too, and the psychiatric report they linked too. While nothing excuses what she did and the unthinkable trauma she perpetuated on her victim's family, Lisa had the most appalling life and clearly suffered from multiple mental illnesses. The number of times US society and health services let her down is just shocking. The reports suggest she has been detached from reality for decades. She needed help. Yes, she wasn't fit or safe to be in society, but she needed help, any she needed it decades before the murder, and she has been let down by everyone in her life at every stage.
Jenasaurus · 13/01/2021 09:24

The only consolation in this is at least she is no longer having to deal with what she did every day. She carried out the murder while in a Pyschotic phase so when she came out of it, and realising what she had done would have been punishment over and over again. If that was me, death would be a welcome relief. There are no winners in this case, very sad for the victim and Lisa.

379abc · 13/01/2021 09:24

I have no pity for her, so many go through horrifically abusive childhoods and don't murder innocent woman and steal their babies from the womb, especially when they already have children. You all say she was mentally ill, but clearly not mentally ill or incapacitated enough not to put a lot of planning and thought into her crime.
I save my sympathy for the family of the woman who died, and her baby.
The real victims family can rest now knowing there is zero chance she will ever be released to live a semblance of normality when their relative was so cruelly and brutally snuffed out.

FoxyTheFox · 13/01/2021 09:24

Do you feel this way when men are executed in the US? Similar situations with men on death row

There's always one...

I'm against the death penalty in all circumstances. State-sanctioned murder is not justice and it disproportionately affects the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill, not to mention the racial and societal bias rife throughout the system with an uneducated black man far more likely to receive a death sentence than an educated white man who has committed a similar crime. It does not act as a deterrent to others and countries with the death penalty tend to have a higher crime rate than those without.
