Only Fools and Horses

It's iconic but I've never watched them all, not sure why, but have just seen occasional episodes.

In need of some light relief, I thought I'd have a go at watching them from the beginning. I only made it half way through the first episode.

Even if you leave aside the casual racism and sexism that was of its time, the Del Boy/Rodney relationship is abusive, not funny, isn't it?

It's funny. I love OFAH!

Thisusernameistakenagain · 21/12/2020 08:10

I really love OFAH :)

Also quite convenient that your thread is practically word for word a copy of this article I read last week.

DailyPotion · 21/12/2020 08:24

Oh Mrgrinch, I really hadn't seen that. Hadn't thought of the programme at all in ages, until I was flicking through Netflix last night.

I found the opening scenes of the first episode, where they're setting the scene of how Del controls Rodney through the whole thing actually quite upsetting.

OP posts:
TriflePudding · 21/12/2020 08:32

If you had carried on watching you would get a better sense of the relationship/dynamic which is that Del was a father figure to Rodney as their actual father was abusive.

Sure it was ‘of its time’ in the sense of the dialogue but the characters and storyline are really heart warming. And if you watch you will see a lot of acceptance of people for who they are not their social standing etc.

You don’t have to like the programme, or watch it, just probably don’t assume everything about it based on watching 15 minutes of it.

LawnFever · 21/12/2020 08:34

I’ve always thought it’s completely overrated, it’s kind of ‘raise a slight smile’ amusing in parts but not laugh out loud funny

Apart from the explosive blow up dolls episode Xmas Grin
Mydogisagentleman · 21/12/2020 08:42

YANBU.
It was funny 25 years ago, not so much now.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 08:50

I'd not watch them now, because both John Sullivan (the writer) and Roger Lloyd-Pack have died and it would remind me of this.

It is of its time.

longwayoff · 21/12/2020 09:15

Oh it's terrible OP. You should notify social services and don't, whatever else you do, pick up and read anything by Shakespeare or Dickens, as I fear you may be too frail to withstand the contents.

goldielockdown2 · 21/12/2020 09:18

I'll never not love it! Of its time for sure but very well written and genuinely funny.

plannit · 21/12/2020 09:55

I disagree. It's all about family and Del and Rodney are great brothers.

Ok so some of the sexist stuff is of it's time but it can take away from the dynamic of the show:

LittleBearPad · 21/12/2020 09:59

It’s not abusive FGS

I just thought this after reading the op post! Love only fools and horses. If you dont like it don’t watch it. And no need to write a whole article on it for a newspaper!
CheeseCakeSunflowers · 21/12/2020 10:16

Watch the episode where Del takes a beating to save Rodney from being on the receiving end it. It says a lot about their relationship.

StreetHaunting · 21/12/2020 10:20

It's the best comedy ever made and I WILL NOT HEAR OTHERWISE!

jerometheturnipking · 21/12/2020 10:22

And every interaction between Rodney and Damien 😂

Mange-tout Rodney, mange-tout.

Agreed!! It must be exhausting always looking for things to complain about while watching a simple sitcom! Have a breakWink It’s my favourite comedy
