So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? )

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Here was me cynically thinking that the MHRA rushed through the final
process to get the vaccine out there before we crash out of the EU on the 31st and our order gets stuck in Europe as the lorries and other transport can’t get through meaning the U.K. would fall to the back of the queue and end up one of the last Western countries to start its vaccination programme (seeing as the Oxford vaccine, the only “homegrown”
one, is possibly less effective and needs more research).

Let’s face it, there was no other option.

And also subject to the same red tape and EU legislation that any medication transport would be. And possibly not the best way of transporting a vaccine that needs to be stringently monitored and kept at extreme temperatures.

Valid points! But surely we’ll need such a large amount of the population vaccinated for the outbreak to be controlled compared to say OZ what could continue with aggressive track and trace and vaccination of front line only?

I agree with you too op , why shouldn't we be proud for a change when something has worked out. Sometimes Mumsnet is depressingly pessimistic and negative.

Im proud of the worlds scientists and that includes our own.

I suspect I will also be proud of those that manage to roll out the vaccine delivery on a large scale. We arent there yet, of course, but I do have confidence in our services being able to rise to the job.

Im not proud of our Government. There are very few steps they've taken over COVID that have proved to be the best choices. Theyve made some pretty awful choices too.

And, Brexit, that remains to be seen of course. Building a massive lorry park in Kent doesnt give me great confidence but I also accept they cannot give any hints until negotiations are complete, so I wont slate them (or praise them) until we know more.
