So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? Grin)

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Just feeling really good about the UK today Smile

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment Grin

I'm from Dover and am definitely not in the mood to praise the Government. My DC are regularly late to school as the buses are delayed by the lorries backed up all the way from the port. They park in our residential spaces, block streets, cause insane traffic. This is all going to get worse in 2021.

TheSandman · 03/12/2020 10:38

@Ironingontheceiling

certainly a lot more than the Scottish, Welsh, and Irish parts of this 'united' kingdom.

Ireland isn’t in the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland is.

Ireland is a completely separate, independent nation from the uk.

@Ironingontheceiling

I didn't say Ireland was part of the UK. I said "Irish parts of the UK". Just as Wales is 'Welsh' and Scotland is 'Scottish', Northern Ireland is 'Irish' and also part of the UK. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

AlternativePerspective · 03/12/2020 10:40

Russia has been vaccinating people for three or four months. I thought I'd read that China we're too. Why is this claimed as first in the world? Russia have rolled out vaccinations without going properly into stage3 trials, hence why the Russian vaccine hasn’t been haled as a success anywhere in the world.

OP, most on here are never happy unless they’re miserable.

babbaloushka · 03/12/2020 10:43

Labour more racist than the Pm who said black boys made him "turn a hair"? More racist than the PM who said Islamaophobia is a "natural reaction"? Who described Muslim women as "letterboxes" and described black people as "Piccaninnies" with "watermelon smiles"? Described a native tribe as "savages" in an "orgy of cannibalism"? Sounds racist to me...

babbaloushka · 03/12/2020 10:46

We can be positive and proud of the scientific community who have made all this possible, British or not, but not the Government who suppressed their voices, spaffed millions on PPE contracts that went to their pet companies and lined the pockets of their families and friends. I am very happy about the vaccine, but not naive enough to pretend that it's thanks to the hard work of Boris. It's not.

Pedallleur · 03/12/2020 10:47

lets see the process of administering it and who gets it. Needs 2 doses to be effective so that relies on people being bothered to get both or even to get any. At the moment nothing is happening except planning. Doubt most of us will see anything until middle of next year

Friendsoftheearth · 03/12/2020 10:52

I am SO proud of the country and I think the government are doing okay actually!

The moonshot thing is working, despite all the negativity. The vaccine IS being rolled out in a matter of days and finally the end is in sight!

In terms of the testing that has been seamless here, no problems getting tests and everything is running well.

Every country has suffered, every country has had its own unique challenges. On the whole I actually think did well, our hospitals were never overrun, we had enough ventilators for everyone - and the lady in charge of finding the best vaccines in the world, and placing her bets deserves a medal in my book - what a hero she is!!

So yes feeling like we are as country going to be in a great place come next summer! :) Wine

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/12/2020 10:53

We are British and we are NOT happy.

MarshaBradyo · 03/12/2020 10:53

Yep too true

Friends Smile nice post love the strong female contribution too

@Lonelycrab

I'm sure racism is present to some degree in most political parties but I do believe it's more prevalent in Labour

Thanks, I needed a laugh this morning. Almost spat my coffee out with that chestnut.

Everyone is entitled to their view. What is yours? I'm not an expert on Politics but I don't hold such vitriol against politicians like some seem to do.

We got emergency authorization for the vaccine because our COVID statistics are shit. It's not a race to success or a moon landing, OP. Sorry to shit on your circle jerk. Oh and if it weren't for the Germans, we wouldn't be scooping up the vaccine in the first place so... there's that. Germany has been instrumental in its development.

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

Sure as shit didn't get here by chance. See above.

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It's a good cause, for sure. It doesn't involve war in the Middle East, which is great!

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

It's like throwing me a surprise 50th party at The Ritz when I'm dead. Bit late in the day to feel like 'celebrating' after years of this omnishambles. An agreement, a conclusion, was always on the cards. It was what was supposed to happen and it needed to happen miles back. We lack diplomacy and scruples and we've been flaunting that fact shamelessly for too long now.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Nothing but a good thing. But the flip side of this will be the lowering dropping of animal welfare standards when we go out and strike our deals with the US. Goodfellas will be striking our trade deals. Remember that.

Just feeling really good about the UK today smile

Well, I can't blame you for being easily pleased. The bar's been set very low for us by our leaders. They toss you a peanut and you think it's a steak.

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment

It will be fleeting. Savour it.

Sedlescombe · 03/12/2020 11:02

Well done to the US and German drug companies

Well done to the Belgian manufacturers for producing it and the British scientists for testing it

As for our government? Top shopping guys

Ironingontheceiling · 03/12/2020 11:08

Northern Ireland is 'Irish' and also part of the UK.

Parts of northern Ireland have people in them who identify as Irish.

Other parts have people in them who identify as British.

But the land that makes up Northern Ireland is currently, in the absence of a border poll to the contrary, British. It is part of the United Kingdom and subject to the laws of the United Kingdom, bar those that are made by the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Is that supposed to be some kind of gotcha? Because, er, no governments have produced a vaccine.

But this one has enabled the right people to make the right decisions on which vaccines to buy. So, yes, top shopping guys! Grin

@Inastatus Mmm really??

Yes, really- The Guardian reported this some time back: later report here
And russian vaccinating again in the guardian

Confusedflea · 03/12/2020 11:27

You really have very little to be proud of when you need to blow your own trumpets for a vaccine produced in Belgium and created by a Turkish woman working in Germany with US funding...

Hasn't it occurred to you that we rushed the approval because Kent is about to become a lorry park?

yawnsvillex · 03/12/2020 11:28

Hi BoJo

nemeton · 03/12/2020 11:31

I'm not miserable, and I am pleased the vaccine has been approved. But I am sick of this bluster from politicians who have completely fouled up the national response to this pandemic.
Gavin Williamson banging on about how Britain is just better than all other nations because we approved the vaccine first...um, the Pfizer vaccine yes? Not the British-developed Astra-Zeneca vaccine?

This is a global pandemic, that requires international effort and co-operation. Jingoistic nonsense like this makes us look like fools.

I am proud that the British-developed vaccine took longer in development in order to iron out the storage problems so that it can be distributed worldwide including in developing countries without deep-freeze storage readily available, so that the vaccine can be used globally. A much lower price and elimination of specialist storage will truly make the difference to combatting covid worldwide. Now that is something to hold your head up for.

OchonAgusOchonO · 03/12/2020 11:44

@TheSandman - certainly a lot more than the Scottish, Welsh, and Irish parts of this 'united' kingdom.

Just to clarify as you seem to be a bit confused as to who "owns" NI - Ireland gave up its claim to NI as part of the GFA so it is no longer considered Irish in our constitution, although obviously lots of Irish people live there as it is the right of anyone born in NI to identify as Irish, British or both,

OchonAgusOchonO · 03/12/2020 11:46

@Mummyoflittledragon

Same goes for every single other country

Not really. GB is an island. Unlike most countries.

Except GB is not the UK and one would assume that banning movement from NI to GB might be a teeny bit problematic.
gamerchick · 03/12/2020 11:46

@MsTSwift

Your post goes against everything English people stand for. We never praise the government nor are we ever pleased with ourselves and certainly not with our government. Are you sure you’re not American?
That made me properly laugh. Cheers Grin
Sedlescombe · 03/12/2020 11:54

1stDecember Not sure why you are taking exception to the MHRA getting the credit for doing a brilliant job but out of respect for your sensitivities "well done Mr Hancock for not stopping the MHRA doing their job" Any chance you can get Dido to do hers?

Oh and apparently we need to congratulate you for buying vaccines during a pandemic. A unique and unexpected achievement.

I didn't take exception?

And being the first country in the world to approve and then start vaccinating is a unique (and unexpected Wink) achievement. So thanks on behalf of the UK!

I am neither pro-Tory or pro-brexit. But at the same time can't we just enjoy this as the achievement it is (even if its only for a little while before Hancock inexplicably fucks it up).
