So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? Grin)

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Just feeling really good about the UK today Smile

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment Grin

btw, so far in 10 years we have come across the following nationals in our very scarce doctors visits...
romanian, irish, german and nurses from commonwealth, indian who studied in Hungary practiced in Germany and came up with a non invasive procedure in Germany and moved here because daughter is now living here after Germany (and is our new gp totally by chance)
only our last GP was proper british.

I honestly would like to know how can ppl fall for these lies "hook, line and sinker"? You really need about 10 minutes in front of google and 2 braincells to figure out how much they are lying.

tonzer65 · 06/12/2020 19:37

Yes, the UK might be the first to roll out the vaccine but we were one of the last to go into lockdown which contributed to the highest Covid related death rates in Europe. Johnson should be ashamed of himself, but that is extremely unlikely as he doesn't know the meaning of the word humility.

Morsmordre · 06/12/2020 21:02

@TheSunIsStillShining

I am the opposite. Ashamed of what this country has become. Gathering of ignorant and stupid, individualistic morons. Yes, there are lovely people here, but they are the minority.

There is nothing to be proud of.
Vaccine: I'd rather the gov would have built confidence with not rushing it through at an insane pace. I'm still confident in it, but it feels like a publicity stunt nothing else.

vaccines2: great that it's approved, but rollout won't start for god knows how long, because that has been botched.

vaccine3: proud that uk gov could hit the buy button? Really? Seriously?

Uk army - world beating? thank god we are not in a position to find out. Might be true, but there is no evidence. It might be my ignorance, but I can't recall a UK-only army event. Joint UN stuff only.

brexit deal: god, you really believe it? Even if there is a deal the UK will be worse off because of the actual fact that we will no longer be in the EU. Nothing to celebrate about that. It's just not a million levles of crap but million-1 levels of crappy. yuhee

I have nothing to say about banning of live animal export as I don't even see the significance of this.

So, let's try again. why should anyone be proud to be a brit in 2020?

Kind of Ironic that your user name on MN is a positive one, yet this post is so mood hoovering! Let me guess - you're a glass half empty individual Hmm
TheSunIsStillShining · 06/12/2020 22:51

actually no. I am more a cat type of person: lands on feet and has 9 lives.
But thank you for reflecting on what I actually said. Really enlightening and insightful.

Gilead · 07/12/2020 01:04

Football players, not having played with a crowd were booed for taking a knee. Yeah really proud of our racist population.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 09:46

Why is everyone waffling about being the first in the world to roll out the vaccine....when you've already been beaten by Russia?

Cygne · 07/12/2020 09:55

I just hope however that actually, being able to swiftly approve this vaccine is going to show the big benefit of leaving the eu

It's been made very clear by the people responsible for this that we were able to approve the vaccine quickly because we are in the EU, and that it would have been much more difficult if it had happened after we leave.

TheSandman · 07/12/2020 10:29

@teateateateateamoretea

Why is everyone waffling about being the first in the world to roll out the vaccine....when you've already been beaten by Russia?
Our beloved leaders quietly slip in the odd "Western World" into their flagraving (sic) waffle about this to cover their arses - and Russia is using a different vaccine.
Defenbaker · 08/12/2020 19:05

I felt very proud of our NHS today, when watching the first people being vaccinated. There were several people in their 80s and 90s, and I thought to myself that in many other countries elderly people will not be prioritised in this way, or vaccinated free of charge (although they have of course paid into the system for years anyway). I felt quite emotional ahout it, and genuinely pleased for the recipients, who were looking forward to seeing their grandchildren etc. Maybe some of them only have a few months left anyway, but they can now enjoy what time they have left, without being constantly fearful of catching Covid. Well done NHS and everyone involved in authorising, planning and organising the prompt roll out of the first vaccine. Smile

Petronius16 · 08/12/2020 20:40

I'm pleased the UK has been able to import vaccine from the EU and made good use of it quickly.

OchonAgusOchonO · 08/12/2020 21:51

@Defenbaker - why is it necessary to make a nasty comment about other countries? Is it not enough to just be proud of the NHS and delighted for the older adults who are getting the vaccine as first priority?

Defenbaker · 09/12/2020 00:23

@OchonAgusOchonO It was not intended maliciously against any particular country, it was just an acknowledgement that in many countries there is no state funded healthcare system, so things are very different. In such countries poor people may well not be able to afford the vaccine at all, or may only have the main breadwinner of their family vaccinated, if cash is very limited. Hard choices around the world, but in the UK we are in a very fortunate position by comparison. Healthcare is a lottery depending on your country of birth (and/or residence).

OchonAgusOchonO · 09/12/2020 08:26

@Defenbaker - it may not have been intended maliciously but it certainly comes across that way. I don't understand the need to put others down in order to feel good.

You do realise that many of the countries without state funded health care are impoverished as a result of colonialism by the UK and other European countries? Obviously I am not referring to the likes of the USA who are excessively right wing and choose not to care for all their citizens.

Bluethrough · 09/12/2020 08:57

Poorer countries, even if they could, will not have access to vaccines next year because richer countries are buying up supplies, often far more than they need.
The UK is no different in this, all the publicity on vaccine is about how and when we will vaccinate everyone in this country.

lifestooshort123 · 09/12/2020 10:28

@OchonAgusOchonO

@Defenbaker - it may not have been intended maliciously but it certainly comes across that way.

It certainly didn't to me .

Ddot · 19/12/2020 20:02

We are very lucky to be British, in my opinion. Merry Christmas x

CabinClose · 19/12/2020 22:16

@DDot you resurrected a zombie thread to announce that on the very day the government revealed that the shit handling of the pandemic has led to the rapid emergence of a new, worse, strain of the virus? Are you particularly proud of that?!

MyOtherProfile · 19/12/2020 22:47
