So proud of the UK today

So, the UK is the first in the world to approve and roll out a Covid vaccination programme. (If another country had done this, say Germany, everyone would be going on about why can't we be as good as the Germans? Grin)

The UK had bought and tested a major amount of the right vaccine - it didn't get here by chance!

The UK Army (which really is world-class) is going to enable the largest vaccine programme ever.

It looks like a Brexit Deal is about to be struck.

And - next year, the UK will be banning the live export of animals. (We couldn't do that in the EU.)

Just feeling really good about the UK today Smile

It doesn't often happen, so I thought I would appreciate the moment Grin

I agree with you too!

nickyschof · 03/12/2020 09:04

Fantastic....we're the first country in the world to offer ourselves up as guinea pigs. Hmm

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/12/2020 09:05

Same goes for every single other country

Not really. GB is an island. Unlike most countries.

Whenwillow · 03/12/2020 09:07

@nickyschof I feel a bit like that too. Pleased to be lower down the priority list for that reason.
They are guinea pigging our oldies though... My mum and fil will be offered up first.

Heyahun · 03/12/2020 09:11

And soon you will have your new blue passport and be unable to have free movement and live wherever you want in the eu - what a time to be alive 🙄

@PrancersgotnothingonPortia

Why hasn't the FDA approved this vaccine? After all it's made by an American Company manufactured in Belgium and will present huge logistical challenges I think Halfcock had to move quickly before brexit strikes, I'm worried about lorries with vaccine on board being stuck at the border waiting to get into UK Hopefully the Astra Zeneca vaccine will be ready soon and as it has no border to cross the logistics may be a little simpler
The FDA use a slightly different process when evaluating the data. It's due to be approved shortly in the US.

I wouldn't say it's made me 'proud' of the UK, OP, but it's certainly made me thankful as far as being vaccinated quickly goes. Though the govt has certainly made other mistakes I think they've done well in this specific area.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/12/2020 09:15

@Backbee

Just remember when you’re queuing up for your vaccine, that if the UK government had handled the crisis better, you wouldn’t be needing that vaccine at all.

So do you think countries like Oz and NZ aren't going to bother vaccinating everyone, and will remain as isolated as possible forever?

No but they can proceed with more caution towards a drug that is very new. I'd be letting all the different countries have a go and then picking the best one, not the first one
confusedx3 · 03/12/2020 09:16

Find positivity where you can OP. I'm glad you are feeling more optimistic today.

There is nothing wrong with being proud of your country. Although, according to a lot of people, it's heinous to include the UK (or more specifically English) and proud in the same sentence.

Ifailed · 03/12/2020 09:17

@Ironingontheceiling

plenty of people who live in N. Ireland are Irish.

FourTeaFallOut · 03/12/2020 09:29

If some people feel motivated by some kind of national pride to get a vaccine then I wouldn't like to dissuade them. Why the hell not, roll up your sleeve and sing Rule Britannia for all I care - just do it.

stressfullday · 03/12/2020 09:29

I don't have much any confidence in the covid vaccine programme. It has been rushed through legislation without proper protocol. I certainly won't be having it until we know how it affects the first batch of guinea pigs users. We have no idea of it's safety and effectiveness.

Ironingontheceiling · 03/12/2020 09:31

Absolutely 100%. People are Irish. People born in Northern Ireland can choose their nationality to be either Irish or British or both.

But Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom. And I’m sure the pp was not meaning those people who live in any part of the uk but who have chosen their nationality as Irish.

So NZ and Aus won’t used vaccines? That other countries have developed, and been able to because trials could occur and people volunteered. Closed borders forever?
MarshaBradyo · 03/12/2020 09:33

@flashbac

Lots of trolling on this thread extolling the virtues of our corrupt and lying government. The vaccine has been rushed through due to the government doing a huge act of harm in severing our supply chains come end of transition period. Hope the money is worth it or are people really this dumb? Tory/brexit supporters sound like cult followers.
What misinformation.

Overall posts like this are worse and more damaging.

MarshaBradyo · 03/12/2020 09:35

@Leafyhouse

One thing for all the people complaining about rushed testing - drug testing / approval is something we're world class at, and we should very proud of UK abilities in that field. The MHRA was something we really brought to the table as part of our EU membership, and the EU medicines approval agency used to be based in London. We've lost it now due to Brexit, but anybody in the business would think twice before attacking the MHRA.
Exactly. This thread is full of rubbish.

GB is. UK isn't.

And do you seriously want us to shut our borders Hmm

UK farmers will also stop being paid for just having land and encouraged to better manage their farms in terms of climate change. Fewer sheep and cattle, and more sustainable farming, now we won't be tied to ridiculous EU rules.

1stDecember · 03/12/2020 09:37

@Billben

The UK Army (which really is world-class)

😂 Even my ex-army DH is laughing at this

Really? Which armies would he say were better? Let's limit to the ten he thinks are better than the British Army Smile

@Whenwillow

Did the EU force live export? I've never really understood this. I'm glad it's going to be banned but I think it could have just not happened before. Presumably they can still refuse to accept meat that's slaughtered here? So the way I see it (appreciate I might be wrong) is that it's yet another of the things that we have blamed on the EU, when were already able to do our own thing.
Yes, very much so forced by the EU. You cannot, as a country within the EU, ban your country from live animal exports.

It's not to do with what meat the EU consumes. It's to do how it exports its live animals.

PigsInHeaven · 03/12/2020 09:40

This is the most pitiable post on the internet today. Seriously, OP?

goldenharvest · 03/12/2020 09:41

Sadly UK bashing by UK citizens is a national sport. One at which we excel in 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Whenwillow · 03/12/2020 09:42

But we've never had to export live animals have we? Some UK farmers choose to.

If Germany had been first yes we would have heard about our inefficiency. But the other way and still a lot of negativity.

Dual passport here and everything my home country does is ‘the best’. Whereas here it’s the worst. Better to be somewhere in the middle imo.
