Vaseline: How did I get to 53 before knowing I could do this?

CormoranStrike · 30/11/2020 15:42

My skin is very dry and prone to spots (thank you menopause).

On a whim I decided to try rubbing in some Vaseline - OMG it’s great! I’ve now added a thin layer below my makeup and the difference is remarkable.

Am I late to the party? And what else so I need to know?

That Vicks vapur rub has other uses - soles of your feet if coughing is keeping you awake at night. On fungal toes (boak!)

BobbinThreadbare123 · 30/11/2020 15:44

It's the 'slug life' - the particles that make up Vaseline are too big to get into your skin, so they sit on top, trapping in moisture. I'm also a dry, crispy person and Vaseline works wonders for a chapped nose, dry eye bags etc. Some people use it as an overnight face mask.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/11/2020 15:48

It's pants on dry lips though. It doesn't replenish the moisture so you just constantly reapply. The blue Nivea lip balm is the best for chapped lips.

Sorry @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz the best lip balm is o’keefes in the orange tube. I had a terrible skin condition around the edges of my lips (you could basically peel them off!) for about a year. GP couldn’t work it out even with blood tests, nothing worked, had to stop wearing makeup- this fixed it in 2 weeks and I now buy in bulk. It is literallly magic 😁

HollowTalk · 30/11/2020 16:10

Thanks for that recommendation, @Keepingthingsinteresting. I've just ordered some of those for my mum, on your recommendation.

Totally agree with this! I was on roaccutane and researched a decent moisturiser for lips before going on it and O'Keefe's was recommended and I've used nothing else since.

I had a memory pop up on FB today, where I said that for a week I'd unsuccessfully tried to treat chapped lips with proper lip stuff, and it hadn't worked, then I'd tried E45 ant-itch cream and 20 minutes later my lips were fine!

Cillmantain · 30/11/2020 16:15

On a side note O Keefe's handcream is fantastic.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/11/2020 16:19

When you say O'Keeffe's tube, so you mean squeezy tube, or twist-up cylinder?

81Byerley · 30/11/2020 16:20

OH! and years ago when Anne and Nick were on breakfast TV, they got a very big range of moisturisers analysed by a Consultant Dermatologist, to see whether something from the pound shop could be just as effective as one of the really expensive ones. At the end, when it turned out that most contain similar ingredients, so you may as well use Nivea, for example, Anne asked "So now you've looked at all of these, which would you recommend?" and was visibly shocked when he said "None of them- Vaseline is absolutely the best one!"

Fuss · 30/11/2020 16:38

Vaseline kills my lips, makes them so so dry. I've tried everything from O'Keefes to Burts Bees and the best for me is without a doubt the Nivea.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/11/2020 16:41

Bepanthen nappy cream is great for sealing moisture into lips Grin

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 30/11/2020 16:44

isn't that fancy pants ElizabethArden stuff basically vaseline??? plus exotic smell

I am pretty sure the Aldi knock off Miracle Cream is.

drumst1ck · 30/11/2020 16:51

Lansinoh nipple cream is my go to for chapped lips.... (and other dry areas). Honestly it's a miracle worker on nipples and any other body part!!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 30/11/2020 16:55

Yeah, I think the Elizabeth Arden stuff is pretty close to Vaseline - it smells petrol-y to me!
Bepanthen is my go-to post-tattoo cream.

I’ve always thought that about the ElizabethArden stuff - plus vaseline doesn’t smell like spicy parmesan 🤢

Old wives tale and absolute nonsense. If you want any benefit put it on your chest and sniff it, you can't smell it through your feet!

My pillows aren't going to thank you, but I am going to try this.
diddl · 30/11/2020 17:16

Do you mean ordinary vaseline (petroleum jelly), Op?

It's very greasy isn't it?

How did you manage to apply make up?

Cailleach · 30/11/2020 17:16

I've always used Vaseline on my face at night / first thing in the morning - 99p for a massive tub that lasts a year.

I work in a place that - amongst other things - sells posh face cream, some brands of which are over £100 a tub. Curious as to what costs so much, I happened to look up one of these online for ingredients list.

And what was first on said list?

Petrolatum.

People are mental aren't they?

Haha, I though the "Miracle Cream" was vaseline with a little tiger balm added. That's what it looks/smells/feels like!
TatianaBis · 30/11/2020 17:17

Vaseline is petrolatum which makes me feel sick personally, I have to avoid lip balms with it in.

Weleda Skin Food has the same effect, with no nasties.

Dillo10 · 30/11/2020 17:18

That a thin layer of vaseline applied to eyebrows and even eyelashes before bed makes them grow like crazy

IRunLikeJoeBiden · 30/11/2020 17:19

Doesn’t Vaseline make your face furry? Or is than an old (furry) wives’ tale?

RubyFakeLips · 30/11/2020 17:19

@Keepingthingsinteresting when you say the orange tube is it the standard stick, the cooling relief or the squeezy one? I have exactly the problem you describe around my mouth and nothing is helping. I'm desperate to get rid of it!
