Vaseline: How did I get to 53 before knowing I could do this?

My skin is very dry and prone to spots (thank you menopause).

On a whim I decided to try rubbing in some Vaseline - OMG it’s great! I’ve now added a thin layer below my makeup and the difference is remarkable.

Am I late to the party? And what else so I need to know?

@TatianaBis

Vaseline is petrolatum which makes me feel sick personally, I have to avoid lip balms with it in.

Weleda Skin Food has the same effect, with no nasties.

What 'nasties' do you imagine are in Vaseline Confused
dontgobaconmyheart · 01/12/2020 01:31

I wouldn't put it on my face. Mumsnet it the only place I've ever heard anyone doing so and it seems to crop up quite a bit on here. Contrary to the comments on here I an never without a vaseline rosy lips and think it's great, one of my favourite lip balms in fact. Cherry carmex is also up there.

Not tried o Keefe's but I forked out for their foot cream recently and was very disappointed. Horrible texture and does next to nothing compared to my usual choices. Each to their own though, skin varies so much person to person!
@Blueseasky Vicks vapurub not vaseline.
@umpteennamechanges @TheSpottedZebra we had a book, still have it somewhere, something 'Mysteries' I think it was called, quite a thick book - there were all sorts of weird images in there, ufo sightings, ghosts etc. and I can still recall the leg with slipper image - an old ladies leg, from below the knee - her slipper had a heel from memory - I too was fascinated by self-combustion as a kid.
I was also obsessed with spontaneous human combustion and had a "Something Mysteries" book. However it is one of the few books I didnt keep and I cant remember the full title. I have bought 3 similar books so far in my quest to replace it. If you still have the book I'd love to know the title of it. Smile

Vicks on feet does cure coughs. I always use it and my cough is gone the next day. It also leaves my feet baby smooth and cured a fungal nail infection when I had one. Its magic! I do put socks over the top because I don't want it all over the sheets. But be warned you end up with very hot feet! Its also good on the temples for headache.

I wish I hadn't lost my sense of smell. I love the smell of vicks!

I have been using vaseline on my face for years, its a great moisturiser, I am 78, with soft skin, and no wrinkles. My late Mum and Grandmother used it too, both had lovely skin into older age.

TatianaBis · 01/12/2020 08:30

Petrolatum, if you read my post, (or indeed the ingredients) which gives me nausea.

HerselfIndoors · 01/12/2020 09:16

Love the spontaneous human combustion chat! :o I was so fascinated and terrified by it as a child, I was actually an adult before I stopped worrying it would happen to me! Confused (I was / am a massive worrier) That foot photo featured in all my "woo, mysteries of the paranormal" type books. It probably isn't in kids books today as sensitivities have changed but even though it scared me shitless for so long, I couldn't tear myself away!

You don't hear about it now do you, people slowly catching fire and leaving their feet behind.

MorrisZapp · 01/12/2020 09:24

Brilliant thread, combines my two favourite obsessions :)

peridito · 01/12/2020 09:41

What's best for dry scaly bits on my nether regions ?

And would nipple cream double as a lubricant for sex ?

When I read about spontaneous human combustion as a kid I was so worried it'd happen to me I'd do stuff like if I had an itch scratch it really slowly so I didn't ignite myself. I'd also learnt that rubbing two sticks together started a fire and worried that scratching fast would start the human combustion process 😆

I also tried not to move too much on a chair in a way that could start a fire. So if I was slumped in the chair I wouldn't scooch myself back up it, I'd stand up and sit back down 🙈

I remember we had a book about various disasters and human combustion. It was a white cover, not very thick, and a picture of the Hindenburg on the cover, along with other events. I can still picture it now. The photos of the slipper with an ash covered armchair always gave me the fear. I'd wonder did they know they were about to go up in flames?

Back to the original op. I used the large blue pot of Nivea creme which is great as a night cream. I use it on my lips too. I'd read using Vaseline or petroleum jelly was counterproductive for dry lips as it didn't moisturise them to being a barrier. I sometimes use my face cream, and I love the tins of Vaseline with aloe vera not just for lips but dry hands etc, and I also love Carmex in the little round tub.

@CherryRipe1

Morbidly obsessed with spontaneous human combination since seeing that charred leg pic. The 'Wick Effect'.
But you do know, now, that it's a myth?
ParadiseLaundry · 01/12/2020 12:54

HighHeelBoots I always change my pillow after a night application of Vaseline.

I have very acne prone skin but it loves the occasional night of Vaseline, it looks so plump and smooth the next day. As long as your skin is clean and you have moisturiser on underneath it should be ok. It's absolutely not comedogenic.

CherryRipe1 · 01/12/2020 13:11

Yes sadly! Seen a couple of documentaries about the spark/flame/combustion of the clothes caused a candle like effect due to human body fat. I was morbidly fascinated with stigmata too, only to learn it's psychosomatic.

Pogmaasal · 01/12/2020 14:16

We use vicks on the soles of our feet for sore throats too and it deffo works.

wizzbangfizz · 01/12/2020 14:47

Would it work underneath concealer to hide under eye lines?!

Dowser · 01/12/2020 14:56

Marilyn Monroe was said to use Vaseline and had lovely skin
( but then she was only 36 when she died)

PuppyMonkey · 01/12/2020 15:03

Just came on to add my support to the revelation that Vicks on the soles of feet with a pair of socks helps you stop coughing at night. It may be a load of old bollocks and an old wive's tale, as pp put it, but I swear it has worked for me and all my kids every single time. Grin Confused

Can anybody explain exactly how to apply Vaseline to the face in layers in order to look like Marilyn Monroe?

The Usborne Book

Mysteries of the Unknown - Monsters, Ghosts and UFOs.

I was more bothered by the painting of Black Shuck.

Mind you, there is a very real risk of dying like that if you use emollients for Psoriasis or Eczema, as you're effectively turning yourself, any dressings, clothes and bed linen into a candle/taper - especially if the person is elderly/immobile and a smoker.

umpteennamechanges · 01/12/2020 17:15

Oooh...that wasn't the one I had @MitziK but my DM still has it. I'll see if she can dig it out.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 01/12/2020 17:17

That wasn't my book either. I think mine had a black cover. And a chapter on spontaneous human combustion, one about the fairy photographs that those girls faked, and possibly one about the Bermuda Triangle.

The only way vaseline would help me look like Marilyn Monroe is if I applied it to other peoples eyeballs 😆

This is the one I remember - available on eBay right now for the princely sum of £17!

Yay, more 'fans' of spontaneous human combustion! We could have a Convention or something.
And yes, that photo! Weren't there 2 legs but only one shoe?

I think my book was called something like Mysteries of the Unexplained.

CormoranStrike apols for the wierd derailing. Hope you're enjoying your slug life. Don't smoke in bed.

Morbidly Googled the picture

TheSpottedZebra · 01/12/2020 17:25

Ooh cross post! Was that my book? Not sure. I shall ask my mum. I always joke that I'm getting it when she dies. NOT my sister who never wanted to read about burnt nannas anyway.
