Vaseline: How did I get to 53 before knowing I could do this?

My skin is very dry and prone to spots (thank you menopause).

On a whim I decided to try rubbing in some Vaseline - OMG it’s great! I’ve now added a thin layer below my makeup and the difference is remarkable.

Am I late to the party? And what else so I need to know?

I'm going to have to piss on your chips a bit Op. If you're prone to spots, Vaseline is not the best face cream. It's comedogenic (clogs pores) so will cause breakouts over time.

You could dab it onto non spot prone areas though.

Humbugus · 30/11/2020 17:50

Elizabeth Arden cream is my go to miracle worker. Whenever I have been burnt in the sun or had cracked lips that heals it over night.

My DS had terrible cracked lips a few months ago. He looked like he'd been lost in a dessert with no water. It went in one night.

Humbugus · 30/11/2020 17:51

Plus, my friend used to use it as a lip gloss and looked gorgeous as it has a light colour.

As Smiley says...it's comedogenic. I use it obsessively on lips but the thought of it on face fills me with horror. It would just make my rosacea flare up to. Still trying to recover my skin from the spots caused by coconut oil...And how could makeup stay on with Vaseline underneath?
Mine doesn't even stay on with no moisturiser, and a primer...(am oily)...

Lavenderfieldsofprovence · 30/11/2020 17:54

@drumst1ck

Lansinoh nipple cream is my go to for chapped lips.... (and other dry areas). Honestly it's a miracle worker on nipples and any other body part!!
I’ve just bought some of this, it’s great on lips and dry skin.
cravingthelook · 30/11/2020 17:54

Bepanthen is a miracle cream in my eyes 😁

CormoranStrike · 30/11/2020 17:55

Hi all - thanks for all the comments.

I’m not generally, or at least not historically, prone to spots. What I am prone to is ridiculously dry skin that is sensitive to everything.

Vaseline is like a soothing balm.

I’m putting a whack on overnight (yes it’s a bit sticky but it does the job), but in the morning I put a tiny amount of Vaseline, then primer then my foundation, and it is working brilliantly so far.

I read that Marilyn Monroe used layers of vaseline and make up. I think they said the layers of it emphasised the baby hairs she had on her face but that it made her photograph beautifully and look so glowy.
LoveandHateWhatABeautifulComb · 30/11/2020 18:02

Nope it works.I don’t understand it. I really don’t. I’ve conducted many experiments on the kids!

Nope, its still bollocks.

MillyA · 30/11/2020 18:02

You say you're prone to spots OP, I don't suppose the Vaseline does anything for those does it? I have hormonal acne and not even prescription strength cream is helping

reluctantbrit · 30/11/2020 18:04

@BogRollBOGOF

Bepanthen nappy cream is great for sealing moisture into lips Grin
In Germany Bepanthan is used for skin issues like softening dry patches or a scrab so you are not picking at it all the time in addition to being a nappy cream.

I always have a tube around when DD scrabs her knee or other body parts in Summer.

SmileyClare · 30/11/2020 18:04

Fair enough Op, sounds like it's working for you. I suppose like most things it's trial and error, you can always change your vas habit if you start getting blocked pores. Smile

jessstan1 · 30/11/2020 18:07

Vaseline intensive care lotion is excellent to massage into skin after a bath or shower and you can buy a more 'intensive' version (white container).

pandora206 · 30/11/2020 18:09

I use Vaseline as an overnight moisturiser a couple of times a week. I find that more than that is too much and does lead to spots. Once applied I then remove the excess with a tissue but that's more to protect my pillows and headboard than my skin.

I find the best lip moisturiser is Palmers cocoa butter swivel stick. That feels really luxurious and moisturing especially when lips are dry.

"That Vicks vapur rub has other uses - soles of your feet if coughing is keeping you awake at night. On fungal toes (boak!)"

Vicks is also great on the temples when you have a migraine Grin

I remember my mother, who always had massive bleeding fissures in her fingertips in winter, absolutely incandescant with fury after spending £17.50 on a tube of Elizabeth Arden Miracle Cream.

She was shrieking with rage once she saw and smelled it 'IT'S COAL TAR OINTMENT! COAL TAR! I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A BAR OF SOAP FOR THAT!'

It healed the splits in her fingers, though. After I was diagnosed with Psoriasis, I found that I could get the same effect for significantly less money just by using a coal tar additive in the bath and then a generic emollient ointment/cream on top.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 30/11/2020 18:26

Vaseline does not cause spots. It is non-comedogenic because the molecules are literally too big to get in your pores. If you layer it on and trap any crap under it then that might cause them.

The twist up tube @TheSpottedZebra.

I love sharing the joy of o’keefes!

GreySkyClouds · 30/11/2020 18:28

Doesn’t work for me (but my skin is frilly dry/prone to eczema). If your skin is very dry then it just locks in the dryness. Sometimes I use it on top of a lotion.

TwilightSkies · 30/11/2020 18:29

I use coconut oil to moisturise my face. Also to remove makeup. Skin has never looked better and I never get spots. Just soft skin.

HerselfIndoors · 30/11/2020 18:29

Another one here wanting know which o'keefe's orange tube (for my big skincare order I'm about to do to try some of these!). I get horrible dry skin, lips and eyelids despite having greasy skin elsewhere Hmm

HerselfIndoors · 30/11/2020 18:29

Ooh x-posted - thanks

I use the O'Keeffe's green hand balm - weird texture but it does sort chapped hands out. I might try the lip balms based on the recommendations on this thread.

stclair · 30/11/2020 18:33

Is it really a good idea putting Vaseline on lips, containing petroleum and all? Confused
