Vaseline: How did I get to 53 before knowing I could do this?

My skin is very dry and prone to spots (thank you menopause).

On a whim I decided to try rubbing in some Vaseline - OMG it’s great! I’ve now added a thin layer below my makeup and the difference is remarkable.

Am I late to the party? And what else so I need to know?

I love that spicy Miracle cream.

hobbyiscodefordogging · 30/11/2020 17:22

Vaseline's a barrier isn't it? So only any good if there's some moisture to trap in there? I seem to remember a doctor on TV or something saying this...

yourhairiswinterfire · 30/11/2020 17:23

I love Vaseline.

I put moisturiser on at night and dab some Vaseline over the top to lock it in. Skin is gorgeous and dewy in the morning after washing it off.

I use it as a makeup remover too. Before I had alopecia it was the only thing that fully removed my waterproof mascara.

Does it not make your makeup break up or slide off?

I use a Chapstick on the sides of my nose when I have a cold. Every time you wipe your nose put a bit on, it stops you looking like Rudolph.

That Vicks vapur rub has other uses - soles of your feet if coughing is keeping you awake at night

Old wives tale and absolute nonsense. If you want any benefit put it on your chest and sniff it, you can't smell it through your feet!

No idea this was an old wives tale- always always makes me feel better and cosier when I slather it on my feet!!

Doesn't vaseline feel really greasy on your face?

ChrisPriss · 30/11/2020 17:26

Some years ago I had dermatitis on my eyelids, Vaseline cleared it up without irritating my eyes.

SprinkleKnees · 30/11/2020 17:28

Balmonds skin salvation is amazing stuff. Low comedogenic and great for dry or eczema prone skin.

user1481840227 · 30/11/2020 17:32

I do this but only over creams and serums.
It's called slugging and you use it to trap the moisture that you've just applied into your skin.

Cailleach · 30/11/2020 17:33

For the people wondering if it feels greasy no it doesn't - try it and see! You only need a tiny bit, much less than normal moisturiser.

tolerable · 30/11/2020 17:34

I've been using "simple"soap and its really begining to show.....bbooom boom tsh..i'll get ma coat...

Surely if there was a fire and you were covered in Vaseline you would go up like the proverbial Christmas tree?

Orangeblossom7777 · 30/11/2020 17:37

Ultra bland from Lush is much nicer and helps with dry spotty hormonal skin

The very best lip balm is Lansinoh nipple cream. I had a split in my lip so deep and so persistent that at the end of an entire winter of it partially healing and reopening over and over again, my dentist wanted to refer me for plastic surgery to basically remove that section of lip and stitch the edges together. I decided on a whim to try Lansinoh on it and it completely healed within 48 hours and never came back. Dentist couldn't believe his eyes when he saw it a week later.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/11/2020 17:37

Who h Which

Chottie · 30/11/2020 17:38

@Fuss

Vaseline kills my lips, makes them so so dry. I've tried everything from O'Keefes to Burts Bees and the best for me is without a doubt the Nivea.
I am the same. Vaseline just dries my lips up. I use Lanolips.
AllTheWorldIsGreen · 30/11/2020 17:39

I'm with drumst1ck and spiderlight - Lansinoh is healing magic on anything. Mineral oil makes my eczema flare up so I avoid Vaseline.

RubyFakeLips · 30/11/2020 17:39

E45 is the killer cosmetic in fires. All the paraffin, maybe because we don't cover our entire bodies in Vaseline though?

Nope it works. I don’t understand it. I really don’t. I’ve conducted many experiments on the kids! And it works on the soles of their feet for coughing. Doesn’t work on their chest though????!
goldenharvest · 30/11/2020 17:42

dry skin on your feet. Slather vaseline on and put on an old pair of socks overnigt. They are super soft in the morning. Same with hands if you have cotton gloves.

This probably wouldn’t work for cracked lips, but I used to get those nasty little splits in the ends of my fingers, & discovered that Nelsons calendula with a plaster on top healed them overnight (well, maybe 2 nights, was a long time ago Grin)
Lovemusic33 · 30/11/2020 17:45

I have just started using Palmers cocoa butter formula, the solid one in a tub. I get dry shin and eczema around my eyes and also on my hands, I have used it on both and it’s been better than Vaseline (and smells amazing).

I do exactly the same. Whenever I have a cold or a sniffle I never have that awful sore nose I used to have for days after.
Jellykat · 30/11/2020 17:47

I read somewhere that things are more easily absorbed through your feet.. something to do with less layers of skin, no hair follicles and bigger pores i think.
