Vaseline: How did I get to 53 before knowing I could do this?

My skin is very dry and prone to spots (thank you menopause).

On a whim I decided to try rubbing in some Vaseline - OMG it’s great! I’ve now added a thin layer below my makeup and the difference is remarkable.

Am I late to the party? And what else so I need to know?

I spend a lot of time outdoors in winter and Nivea mixed with a bit of bepanthen is my go to for dry or chapped skin. Cheap as chips and works a treat

Flupibass · 30/11/2020 21:12

I used Vaseline on my scars after surgery. My physio told me to. I hate the stuff, the texture makes me feel sick, but it works brilliantly.

Vintagevixen · 30/11/2020 21:14

Just don't light up a ciggie with a Vaseline face mask on - it's flammable! I took my DD on one of the kiddie survival skills sessions once and the ranger showed us how to start a fire with cotton balls dipped in Vaseline as fire lighters.

IS there any truth it can make hair grow? As i've read frequently on beauty sites it can help lashes and brows grow. Certainly did nothing for mine..thyroid killed my brows off 25 yrs ago

HighHeelBoots · 30/11/2020 21:30

I am now in bed watching I'm a celeb with vaseline on my face. I can't see because my glasses are greased up and I'm wondering how my pillow will copeGrin
Any tips?

LindaEllen · 30/11/2020 21:37

Out of interest, doesn't the Vaseline make your skin spottier? I always found it did with mine, and I figured it might be because it's so greasy .. but that could just be me, and to be fair, everything makes my skin break out.

CormoranStrike · 30/11/2020 21:39

I will report back in a wee lok or so, but so far my spots are receding

@TheSpottedZebra

Surely if there was a fire and you were covered in Vaseline you would go up like the proverbial Christmas tree

I was an odd child and had a thing for reading about 'spontaneous human combustion^. Who h you have just reminded me of Grin

Me too! That photo with the leg that still had a slipper on it next to the burnt hole in the carpet is what started it...

jakscrakers · 30/11/2020 21:47

Blistex what used to be Blisteze works like magic, makes the lips soft and fresh again, also use round nostrils when you have a cold, great to sniff, and keeps the rudolph nose at bay

kidscreatemess · 30/11/2020 21:47

@drumst1ck

Lansinoh nipple cream is my go to for chapped lips.... (and other dry areas). Honestly it's a miracle worker on nipples and any other body part!!
Everyone seems to say this but Lansinoh did nothing for my nips or lips. Just made them worse.

Vaseline is great for my lips- the only thing that works when they're chapped!

Definitely different lotions and potions for different people.

blueshoes · 30/11/2020 22:02

I use Nivea cold cream and Almond oil (for massage) on my face every night and morning. Keeps it soft and wrinkle free for hardly any cost at all. I am early 50s.

stevalnamechanger · 30/11/2020 22:31

Its amazing! Welcome to slug life :D

ColdNovemberNights · 30/11/2020 22:37

When vicks is put on the soles of the feet, do you put socks on the top?

ScienceSensibility · 30/11/2020 22:38

I’m a long time fan of 8 Hour Cream. Love it so much and been buying it for 20+ years.
Nothing comes close, and I’ve tried them all

Like a PP I use it as a lip gloss too, lovely light Amber colour. I am often asked what it is. This was obviously before covid, when we were able to see other people’s lips!

Probablywrong · 30/11/2020 22:46

Suducrem is my go to for any spots or sore patches.
I believe you can also use it as a primer but I’ve not tried that.
Vaseline is great for taking eye make up off but I prefer reve du miel or blistex for lips

MitziK · 30/11/2020 23:07

No point in bothering with it in the first place. It's not going to do anything for your nose, breathing (or nail fungus) down there.
FrenchtoEnglish · 30/11/2020 23:16

@TheSpottedZebra Me too! Obsessed with spontaneous human combustion!

I love Blistex @jakscrakers but I find it really hard to get now. Where do you get it from? I was wondering if it had been banned due to containing ammonia!
Lalliella · 30/11/2020 23:36

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

That Vicks vapur rub has other uses - soles of your feet if coughing is keeping you awake at night. On fungal toes (boak!)
@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz are you saying Vicks is good for fungal toes?
katiegoestoaldi · 30/11/2020 23:38

I am another lover of the Body Shop's hemp hand cream, it's amazing for sore, rough, cracked skin. Blows old Lizzie A out the water

CherryRipe1 · 30/11/2020 23:38

Morbidly obsessed with spontaneous human combination since seeing that charred leg pic. The 'Wick Effect'.

PigletJohn · 01/12/2020 00:02

The lightest possible smear of vaseline, just enough to add a sheen, can be wiped onto the touching edges of doors and frames after they have been painted and seem to have dried, to prevent them sticking when closed overnight.

VenusTiger · 01/12/2020 00:23

@Blueseasky Vicks vapurub not vaseline.
@umpteennamechanges @TheSpottedZebra we had a book, still have it somewhere, something 'Mysteries' I think it was called, quite a thick book - there were all sorts of weird images in there, ufo sightings, ghosts etc. and I can still recall the leg with slipper image - an old ladies leg, from below the knee - her slipper had a heel from memory - I too was fascinated by self-combustion as a kid.

VenusTiger · 01/12/2020 00:24

lady's not ladies

VenusTiger · 01/12/2020 00:27

@ColdNovemberNights depends if you/child is running a fever, if so, then do not put socks on in bed. To the pp saying it's bollocks - it really isn't, it's worked for my son over the years and I will still continue to use it in that way. Works for me with tickly coughs - maybe it's the type of cough who knows.
