Metal loving MNetters rock on

DK123 · 29/11/2020 16:19

I thought it would be nice to start a thread for metal loving MNetters after speaking to @ApplesandAardvarks @NastyBlouse @IndemMUND about missed concerts. Great to find fellow Rammstein fans and metalheads!

Please join in if you love metal and enjoy going to concerts!

It'd be great if anyone wants to share info on new releases they've enjoyed, concert announcements, doesn't know many metallers and wants to link up with people going to a particular gig.

Let us know the last gig you went to and the ones you've missed this year or what new albums you've been enjoying recently!

The last gig I went to was 3teeth and I've been listening to the new songs from The Pretty Reckless and the new Katatonia release.

🖤🎸🤘🏻🎸🖤 Rock on everyone!
@PopcornAndWine I remember when Once came out! I think Angels Fall First was the album I listened to most often. I remember seeing them in around 2003 at Rock City Nottingham and in about 2005 in London.
Do you like Within Temptation at all? I listen to them quite a lot nowadays.
Oh yes they are probably my second favourite after Nightwish! I wasn't so keen on their most recent album though. The Unforgiving is my favourite.

TurquoiseDragon · 01/12/2020 22:08

I remember my one and only Download, I was poised with the PC at work (I know, but no-one was bothered). I managed to get a ticket with barely any waiting. When I told Ex, his first response was "did you even think about a family holiday next year, how could you just go ahead without talking to me first?"

I'd been talking about trying to get a ticket, he knew the dates wouldn't clash with our usual time, but he just had to have a reason to have a go at me.

Well, joke's on him now. I'm arranging his funeral on behalf of the kids.

Meanwhile, I'm listening to Ghost right now, I've not heard of them before.

I enjoyed Download immensely, btw, I got a ticket into the luxury area, and just took everything in with pleasure. was great to listen to bands I'd not heard before.

And next year I'm going to learn to play drums Grin

@PopcornAndWine I'm listening to The Unforgiving right now! It's my favourite Within Temptation and I love The Silent Force too. I wasn't too keen on the new one. I'm not sure what they were aiming for, especially with the track with Jacoby Shaddix!

@TurquoiseDragon Ghost are brilliant! I saw them towards the end of last year and it was a great atmosphere! I think Prequelle was one of the best albums of last year.

For anyone looking for inspiration for new albums to listen to, Loudwire have done a list of the best 2020 releases. I don't personally think it was a brilliant year (aside from the obvious) but everyone's tastes are different and there might be something you didn't know had been released and might enjoy:

loudwire.com/best-rock-metal-albums-2020/

For me, some of my favourites on this list include;
F8 - FFDP
Katatonia - City Burials
Static X - Project Regeneration
Marilyn Manson - We are Chaos
CMFT - Corey Taylor
Cyr - The Smashing Pumpkins

Oooh, there's stuff I've not heard of before, looks like I've got some listening to do Grin

I do find I tend to go for music with a heavier bass/drum sound, which is highly likely to be a response to the fact that I'm partly deaf (from birth) with most of the loss in the upper frequencies.

I know some people have found it odd that I can often recognise the intro to a track before they can, based on said drum/bass beats Grin

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 02/12/2020 00:11

Just a passing late night thought.... Would any of you Beautiful Vipers fancy a meet up at Whitby Goth weekend next year?
We could don our bestest finery, plaster on the warpaint, fill bamboo travel cups with Jack Daniels, and show the bairns how it's done...
Or you could all come to Vikings in Sheffield - beginning of December - and we could get our Valkyrie out Grin swig gin from ale horns and shout AIBU in the style of Icelandic footy fans...

TheOnlyMrsW · 02/12/2020 14:29

@PopcornAndWine love Within Temptation too - not fan of the new album either though. We saw them on the Hydra tour and they were fab, then last winter where they seemed to be promoting the new album before it had actually been released here Confused.

Am relatively new to Nightwish, WT, Evanescence etc - my listening as a teen/early 20's was very similar to @wishywashywoowoo70 but has been expanded by DH. Previous partner (and DD's dad) was openly not a fan of anything I listened to so went for a few years not going to gigs until we split. I have the last laugh though as she is firmly in "our" camp music wise and he hates listening to it in the car!!!!

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS I've always wanted to go to WGW and we were planning a trip this year ironically! It's not exactly my thing or style but I love Whitby itself, and always feel at home there.

TurquoiseDragon · 02/12/2020 18:41

I've come back for some light relief. Collected the keys and other stuff my ex had on him when he died, and got into the house, made sure it was safe, cleared the fridge, etc. Wasn't prepared for the emotions, but I guess you can't really.

I've been listening to Within Temptation and Nightwish over the last couple of years. First time I heard Nightwish was when I saw them at Download in 2016, and I really liked their show. Skindred is another I saw then, listen to them sometimes. Also Starset, Crossfaith, and my DS has recently recommended Cold Rain.

TurquoiseDragon · 02/12/2020 19:29

My Dbro told me earlier that there are some good Indian metal bands emerging. I'll get some names off him, and post them here.

Chrimboo · 02/12/2020 19:37

A bit late to this thread but I’m a metal / hard rock fab too!
My favourite thing to do is go to a gig or festival and listen to it LOUD as it should be.
I’ve missed gigs massively.
Seen many a band and couldn’t possibly list them all but I love and I’ve seen everything from avenged sevenfold to biffy clyro to rammstein to quireboys(!)

DK123 · 02/12/2020 21:47

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS That is an absolutely fantastic idea and I can't imagine anything better than a MN Whitby Goth Weekend meetup!!
I am so up for that. I'm liking the sound of Vikings too.

DK123 · 02/12/2020 21:49

Also, what has everyone's Spotify (if they have one) told them their top listens to are this year?

I was slightly surprised by mine, my top artist is Stone Sour and it said I'm in their top 0.01% of listeners. Also on the list was The 69 Eyes, Type O Negative, FFDP and Rammstein.

OP posts:
ShinyPie · 02/12/2020 23:13

The Viking meetup is very appealing, although it'll be either mead or rum in my horn!

According to Spotify, my most listened to genres this year have been power metal, folk metal, alternative metal, heavy metal and country (don't ask Grin). With my top bands including Judas Priest, Blind Guardian, Tyr, Amorphis and Grand Magus.

DK123 · 02/12/2020 23:45

@Chrimboo welcome! Really pleased to see you here! I'm so happy there are so many metalheads here joining the thread.

I always thought "I've found my people" was a bit twee, like - "my DH throws tea bags at the bin - I want to strangle him, AIBU?" and people chime in and say "YANBU, I couldn't cope with that, LTB" and you think hell yes!

But this thread is actually the real definition of I've found my people! Thank you everyone for joining, it's really made me very happy!

Last year Vikings had their own guest ale, it was lovely ( a d I don't often say that about real ale) AND it was only £2 a pint! DS and I lost count at about the fifth pint Grin

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/12/2020 07:17

Also up for a meeting!
I don't have Spotify but Youtube tells me that in the last few months I have listened to a lot of Heart, Dio, Powerman 5000 and Static X (and loads of 80s electronic stuff Blush). Favourite band is still Judas Priest.
I don't have any female friends who like metal although I captured a sibling's imagination very young (13 y younger than me).

TurquoiseDragon · 03/12/2020 12:19

I think I'm up for a meeting. would be great to meet likeminded folk.

I think I've found where Spotify have my top choices, and I am reminded of one album I fouond by accident. Konami Defense Systems only ever released one album, no idea who these people are, nothing much comes up on Google. But it's quirky and I like it.

As well as Rammstein, Disturbed, Crossfaith, Halestorm, etc, I've also had a range of Electro-metal I've been listening to this year, a lot of it instrumental. Has been great for listening to when out walking.

Deathraystare · 03/12/2020 15:12

I was in Crete on holiday with a group of single people (not really relevant) and the tour leader asked what music I liked. I like most things but he wanted to know which Scandinavian black metal bands I liked and proceed to put names into his computer and everyone heard the stuff. My companions faces were a picture!

DK123 · 03/12/2020 18:15

@Deathraystare - I know exactly what you mean! I always remember my colleagues' faces when I said I'd been to a gig and they wanted to know what the band was. I remember one woman kept telling me she found metal bands terrifying. oh dear lol!

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS @TurquoiseDragon @BobbinThreadbare123

I think this is a fantastic idea and I am so happy with this thread and to be talking to you guys! I'm going to make a private facebook group for anyone who wants to join. I think there are a lot of us who want to talk about metal and all things goth, but don't know that many people IRL who are interested or want to go to gigs!

TurquoiseDragon · 03/12/2020 18:30

Great, looking forwards to it all.
