Metal loving MNetters rock on

DK123 · 29/11/2020 16:19

I thought it would be nice to start a thread for metal loving MNetters after speaking to @ApplesandAardvarks @NastyBlouse @IndemMUND about missed concerts. Great to find fellow Rammstein fans and metalheads!

Please join in if you love metal and enjoy going to concerts!

It'd be great if anyone wants to share info on new releases they've enjoyed, concert announcements, doesn't know many metallers and wants to link up with people going to a particular gig.

Let us know the last gig you went to and the ones you've missed this year or what new albums you've been enjoying recently!

The last gig I went to was 3teeth and I've been listening to the new songs from The Pretty Reckless and the new Katatonia release.

🖤🎸🤘🏻🎸🖤 Rock on everyone!

@SlippersForFlippers welcome fellow metaller! The more the merrier!

I would never have realised how many other MNetters were in the crowd at Download until this thread. Metal is definitely for life though.

On a slightly related note, I wondered if any fellow MNetters like to go to Whitby goth weekend? Or are goth IRL/or just at home/or only now in spirit?!

I haven’t been to a metal gig in years but went to loads in my late teens/early 20s.

I was going to start listing them but there’s way too many.

My favourite gig though was Slayer at Nottingham Rock City in 2000.

I used to love the dingy old venues I’d go to. Dudley JB’s holds a special place in my heart, all sticky floors and broken toilet doors 😄

DK123 · 29/11/2020 23:58

@SingleHandSue Slaaaaayyyyerrr!! 🤘🏻 Rock City is one of my favourite venues. Seeing HIM there in about 2002 was one of the first concerts I went to!

Also Whitby goth weekend regular, it's only about an hour's drive and have family living near by so don't have to worry about hotel costs!

I have some clothes I get out for goth weekend, generally I just wear jeans and T-shirts. Pretty much haven't changed that since I was in my teens 😂

SingleHandSue · 30/11/2020 00:04

Are there any decent rock/metal clubs around anymore? (Obviously not during Covid)

Every weekend I’d be off to a club, there were so many great ones at one point.

Jilly’s in Manchester, XL’s in Birmingham, First Base, The cage and The Deep in Wolverhampton. So many great nights had. I’d love to go to a proper metal club again and become the old crumbly rockers we used to take the piss out of

DK123 · 30/11/2020 00:10

@SingleHandSue which part of the country are you asking about? If in the midlands I'd say that there are still some good rock pubs in Nottingham but nowadays most of what's still going is more towards biker pub than stereotypical rock club.

There were a couple in Birmingham I used to go to but I can't remember the names, there could have been one called Snobs?

In London (if we go for a weekend) then the clubs still around are more the ones with a fetish edge. There are a couple of good rock bars round Holloway Road/archway I think.

@SlippersForFlippers that's great you still go to WGW! I absolutely love it.

Although I don't still go to the supermarket in a long leather coat (Matrix style 😂) I don't think my fashion choices have changed all that much. my 15 year old self would have been very impressed with my adult wardrobe now I buy my own clothes!

I wish I had kept up my style from my younger days.

I had DS1 young though and had such fears of being judged a bad mother because of being young and how I looked (full on sexy goth most of the time) that I really toned it down after he was born. I’ve ended up being a totally boring and normal 40 yo now!

DH and his best man did wear New Rocks on our wedding day though!

TurquoiseDragon · 30/11/2020 00:42

*@DK123 & @ApplesandAardvarks. Thanks, and I'm sure Mum is rocking along in spirit, too. She's the one who got me into metal, via rock&roll.

Picture the scene, 25 to 30ish years ago. There's my mum, late 40s plus, coming along to the metal nights at Rock City in Nottingham with me and a couple of cousins/friends. She had a blast. I'm in my early 50s now but won't forget the fun we had on those nights.

My teen DS is now nicking my music, he likes Rammstein, Linkin Park, among others. And we can quietly ignore DD and her liking for K-Pop. 😁

DK123 might take you up on your offer, if you can cope with a fat middle aged mum 😂

DK123 · 30/11/2020 00:56

@TurquoiseDragon please please do! It's great to talk to fellow metal lovers and we metallers stick together!

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss but I am absolutely certain your DM is rocking on!

That's amazing to hear your DCs love such good music and also that were going to Rock City when you were younger, my DM and DDad took me when I was too young to go and I remember standing in the car park with my DM in a queue by the tour buses to get my ticket signed by Nightwish! The guy with long blonde hair took a liking to my DM and was talking to her for ages and I practically elbowed him out of the way when I saw Tarja coming! 😂

@SingleHandSue thats absolutely wonderful they were wearing New Rocks to the wedding, that is just spot on!

DK123 · 30/11/2020 01:00

@SingleHandSue and you will never be a boring 40yo, you never stop being a goth 😉

My DDad still takes the piss out of me because when I was 14 he said something like "you going out dressed as a goth," very offended, I replied "I'm not dressed AS a goth, I AM a goth." Decades later I still thoroughly stand by that (and often remind him).

I still look largely the same, too. Gothy! Everything is black (I do permit a bit of purple). I'm a scouser so we used to go to the Krazyhouse in Liverpool - it had 4 floors: two of metal, a hard rock and a punk floor! Occasional forays to Jillys in Manchester. I did once do a trip to Nottingham Rock City but it was a hell of a long way to trek!

Pickypolly · 30/11/2020 07:12

There’s a fantastic live rock venue in Blackpool called the Waterloo pub. They have the best live bands of my youth on there.
If you are in the north and want a cracking night out, once re opened, it’s well worth the journey.
Their website lists bands, honestly, it will warm the cockles of your heart.

They are fighting to stay afloat at the moment as are many, it’s heartwarming to see what the locals are doing to keep it going.
So speaking of nostalgia, do Amy of you remember Donnington, monsters of rock before it was Download?
Aerosmith, AC/DC, Whitesnake, Quireboys (they played the Waterloo pub before lock down!!!! Eeek)
Whitby goth weekend is my favourite people watching event, I bloody love it! Been a few times, it’s fascinating.

Lighingupthesky · 30/11/2020 09:00

Hi all can I join you all!

Sad so many have missed out this year for concerts, my last one was in Feb this year in Munich to see Japanese band Crossfaith. Not my usual type
But dragged along by DH, think we were almost the oldest there, great night though and on so civilised!

Saw Rammstien back in 2004 at the Waldbuhne in Berlin, fantastic setting and a fantastic night. Liked and followed then for a few years after then just trailed off after a concert in Manchester.

Been going to concerts since the first little known (and only for one year) Rock on the Tyne in 1981, Diamond Head were a revalation!

Newcastle City hall had some fab bands on as did the Mayfair, went to the Tube a few times as well in the audience, an those were the days. The closed set with Robert Plant being a highlight, it's never been shown though. Motorhead and Twisted Sister, that was a night.

Concerts that stick out as well Pearl Jam in 1999, Rush, 1983, scorpions 1981(for being so bad!) UFO mid 80s, Y&T 1981...... I could go on! But if a mix of tastes there!

Need to do a list too many concerts to remember!

Lighingupthesky · 30/11/2020 09:21

Yes I remember Donnington Monsters of Rock, some excellent bands, same with Reading.

GoddamReylos · 30/11/2020 09:37

This thread makes me so happy and sad at the same time! I miss that sweet, beery, sweat smell that only comes from a metal crowd Grin

Zenithbear · 30/11/2020 09:46

Missed out on Download and Ozzy and Judas Priest this year.
Glad we got to see Buckcherry and the Cult last year, amongst others.
Seen lots and lots of bands since mid 80s.

SebastianTheCrab · 30/11/2020 10:01

Hello my people 🤘

2002-2004 was the era I became musically mature (although there is still a place in my heart for the Backstreet Boys) and I never really moved on from there so nu-metal with other stuff thrown in too. Really into Disturbed atm, their new album is incredible, and I had had vague plans to try and watch Rammstein live before the pandemic hit. I don't go to gigs much anymore as I have a condition that makes me physically tired a lot - went to see Iron Maiden last year and 60-year-old Bruce was running up and down like a loon on stage while I was seated with a cushion because my back was hurting 🙈 I'm half his age...

For radio I listen to Kerrang. They're mostly fine with the occasionally whiny shit thrown in (also not happy about them playing Machine Gun Kelly all the time who is not rock or metal).

Surprised to see so many 5 finger deathpunch fans. I'm not a big fan of what I've heard so far (their Offspring cover is terrible) but then if you put a gun to my head I'd cop to liking Nickelback so who am I to talk...

SebastianTheCrab · 30/11/2020 10:02

Oh btw I got scammed by a Chinese retailer selling goth clothes pretending to be in the UK last week. I posted another thread about it in chat. The website is DevilNight - they're Chinese scammers so avoid avoid avoid.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 30/11/2020 10:18

@SebastianTheCrab I like nu-metal as well - I was a teenager/YA when it all came out so a bit of Papa Roach brings all the nostalgia! I've loved Disturbed since they came out.
I listen to Planet Rock via internet - it doesn't come on DAB in the NW any more, annoyingly!

AWholeLottaRosie · 30/11/2020 10:43

We should have been going to Download, Ramblin' Man, and Stone Dead festivals plus Whitesnake at Newscastle.

Last gig was Halestorm, this time last year. Seems like ten years ago 😖

How were Halestorm? I love the few songs I've heard of theirs and saw them once at the metal hammer awards a few years ago. Really need to listen to some albums. I love Lizzie she's so fucking cool.

AWholeLottaRosie · 30/11/2020 11:20

Halestorm were excellent, and a refreshing change listening to a female lead singer.

TheOnlyMrsW · 30/11/2020 11:27

morning all! Our last gig was the Thunder Christmas show in Birmingham last year - they're my absolute faves, I love Danny and have done since I was 14 Grin.
We were desperate to get to FFDP in London in Jan but couldn't get tickets........have missed Fish, Evanescence and Within Temptation, Download, Green Day, Black Stone Cherry, Kris Barras, Thunder and the Levellers this year. The tickets for them all are all valid for next year - and we've got Steelhouse and Skindred booked as well. DD15 will be coming to Download for the first time next year and I'm just keeping everything crossed that it goes ahead........
I'm another Planet Rock fan, loving a lot of the more bluesy ladies they play at the moment like Orianthe, Joanne Shaw Taylor etc
