Do you believe in astrology?
What's your primal triad?
Sun-
Moon-
Rising-

Well you're surely not suggesting the 'information' was handed down by someone who actually has proof that it's true? So it is all made up. And put in a chart. So when you do your chart, where do all the details you get come from? Presumably they come from whoever made it all up

From astronomers/NASA and all the other people who plot the course of planets.

It is about where the planets are in relation to the place of birth and the moment of birth.

People don’t just make up where Saturn or Jupiter are.

SlopesOff · 09/10/2020 13:33

@Giraffey1

I don’t ‘like’ believe in anything.
Neither do I, like.
Level75 · 09/10/2020 13:36

Also @Peace92 it's OK to admit science doesn't have an answer for everything. But that doesn't provide evidence for made up explanations to fill the knowledge gap, particularly when those explanations don't stand up to scrutiny.

For me, 'we don't know yet' has got to be better than 'the Gods pull the sun across the sky' or 'a star is in a specific location'.

It's also worth asking yourself why, when the scientific method is able to provide such useful results, you would choose in this instance to disregard the total lack of (proper reliable) evidence for the efficacy of astrology.

I understand what your saying and I agree all I'm saying is in terms of astrology just because it hasnt been scientifically proven, does not mean there is no chance that there is some truth behind it.I didn't start this thread to be mocked and have arguments with people.I just wanted opinions.

Level75 · 09/10/2020 13:38

@Oliversmumsarmy I can't see where anyone says that the position of the planets has bee made up - can you point me to this.

I can see people questioning what relevance this has.

You might want to look into confirmation bias as a more rational explanation for your allegedly accurate charts.

Peace92 · 09/10/2020 13:42

@Oliversmumsarmy

Why did I start this thread ? 😂

OP posts:
Level75 · 09/10/2020 13:47

@Peace92 some people believe there's a giant spaghetti monster who lives in the sky, some people believe that there's an old man sitting in the clouds, some people believe there are many gods, one with the head of an elephant, some people believe in astrology.

I agree there's not NO chance that these things are real/true but I do question how likely they are to be true. I choose to work on the basis of what's likely to be correct rather than on a vanishingly small possibility.

I think the interesting question to ask yourself is why you want to believe in something for no reason.

Also, I don't think anyone is mocking you on this thread, just explaining a few things which you don't seem to have considered.

MellowMelly · 09/10/2020 13:48

I find it interesting but I wouldn’t live my life by it. I’m a Leo, classed as being on the cusp, (or I was a Leo until they discovered the new star sign this year) but I wasn’t a typical Leo in my opinion. I definitely do not like being centre of attention and I’m not an extrovert.

A friend, for fun, did my astrology chart and said I had Cancer rising so the water sign balanced out my Leo fire. It kind of made sense and I have far more Cancerian traits to be fair. I am officially now a Cancer sign according to the new Astrology chart anyway so it was never right to begin with! But like I said, I find it interesting, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m a ‘believer’.

With religion, I just don’t know. We all believe what we believe in. I’m non religious and would like to think there was more beyond death but without anything to back it up we will never know.

I have considered that's why I started the thread in the first place.Didnt expect people to be so rude about it though.

I take back the science is small minded comment.Should not of said that because I love science Grin

I think it's been fairly civil considering your position is essentially 'The entire field of what we know about how the universe functions is 'small-minded'', so I'm going to choose to believe in a pseudoscience which has consistently failed to demonstrate any mechanism by which the position and movement of plants and stars can affect humans which is not in contravention of well-understood aspects of physics and biology.'

OP, there's actually been a fair bit of research into astrology -- twin studies have not demonstrated any correlation from being born at the same time, there is no correlation between astrological chart and career etc. The results have always been no better than chance, and in some cases worse than chance. The one study that appeared to find that there was a correlation between the position of Mars and certain careers was later discredited for selectivity in the individuals included.

Quite simply, to believe in astrology requires rejecting all established scientific disciplines which are incompatible with it eg. biology, physics.

Peace92 · 09/10/2020 14:24

@Sapiophile If you think being rude is being civil then ok, just because somebody do not have the same belief system as you, does not give you the right to be rude. Thanks for your opinion, I'll take it on board. Hopefully you will take my comment on board too.

Why?

Astrology and biology/physics are 2 very different things.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 09/10/2020 14:38

Gosh, I didn’t think people still believed in astrology. That’s surprising. And also slightly depressing.

Reminds me of my lovely granny who always read her horoscope in the Dundee Courier. She said that in the late 50s her horoscope said she’d move house. They lived in a single room attic flat and she thought “I wish!”
DGF came home that same day telling her they had a lovely new three bedroomed council house with a garden. So she continued to read her horoscope for the rest of her life.
“I always thought it was a load of rubbish until then” she said!

There’s a saying about stopped clocks that may fit there.

lazylinguist · 09/10/2020 14:39

Astrology and biology/physics are 2 very different things.

Yes, but astrology contradicts more than one branch of science if it claims to both influence what individual human beings are like and predict future events.

lazylinguist · 09/10/2020 14:45

No of course not. Lord, this is hard work. What they make up is the idea that where planets are has any effect on your personality or future. So, to be absolutely clear - an astrological chart might be accurate in terms of astronomy, but the information you use to interpret what you think it means for you is made up. NASA don't tend to go in for that sort of thing, as far as I'm aware.

Peace92 · 09/10/2020 14:53

Why does astrology contradict science?

OP posts:
giantangryrooster · 09/10/2020 14:55

Belief system... well don't you think science should back our perception of our evolution, our surroundings and the universe? or rather do you just choose that science doesn't have to support your specific hobby horse? With this way of thinking it will be just as valid believing in fairies, father Christmas and leprechauns.

Astrology as with religion was a way of explaining the world/lives/death and sticking out rules and guidelines. The older the theories, the less likely it is scientifically sound. But was/is needed to reassure people.

Brahumbug · 09/10/2020 15:18

@Oliversmumsarmy

You do your chart and it doesn’t change, you can’t just move the sun into a different house or sign unless you physically move location

Apart from the fact that astrological charts have no relation to where the sun and stars actually are. For example, anybody who thinks they are a Leo because the sun is in that constellation in August is wrong because the sun is in the previous constellation. How do you explain that pluto is no longer a planet? Or for that matter any charts from before Pluto was discovered?
I am a Leo, so sceptical of these thingsGrin

raddledoldmisanthropist · 09/10/2020 15:22

There is a lot science cant explain!! Does that mean it's not real?

OP, could you name something provably real which Science can't explain?

It's all about energy etc.

Could you explain what you mean by energy here?

lakesidewinter · 09/10/2020 15:28

I'm talking about the unexplainable not vaccines and cancer treatment!!

Both of these things were considered unexplainable in the past.

Science is by its very boundary pushing and always looking for answers to the unexplained.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 09/10/2020 15:28

They do. The stars have moved since star signs were first made up but people still stick with the same dates because they are well known.

If you compare several horoscopes you will see that the gubbins about Jupiter ascendent or having a Mars in Uranus varies from one to another. It's just fluff.

CupidStunt2020 · 09/10/2020 15:36

Of course not. You'd have to be a complete moron to believe such bunkum in this day and age.

Strugglingtodomybest · 09/10/2020 15:42

No, I don't believe in it. It's up there with believing the earth is flat as far as I'm concerned.

DillonPanthersTexas · 09/10/2020 16:00

Why does astrology contradict science?

It's a pseudoscience that claims to be scientific and factual but is incompatible with established scientific method.
