The famous astronomer, Carl Sagan said:
“Science is not only compatible with spirituality: it is a profound source of spirituality.”

This man reserved judgement on the existence of God and would not call himself an atheist.

Carl Sagan: “An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no God.”

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sagan

"Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, author, and science communicator.

Initially an associate professor at Harvard and later at Cornell, from 1976 to his death, he was the David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Space Sciences at the latter. Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author, co-author or editor of more than 20 books"

I do and am able to read full birth charts now. It's been a hobby of mine for several years now.

I love astrology but I also believe in the Barnum Effect, that people will look for similarities in a horoscope and apply it to their owns lives. I also believe that people are (consciously or not) self-fulfilling prophecies. If I said "all Pisces are kind and empathetic" you might think "well I'm a Pisces so I must be those things" and then find yourself being more kind and empathetic as you feel that those positive traits are part of your personality. There's no doubt that time/place/date of birth does have an effect on you as it shapes your life experiences. I've done tarot reading before and I always point out it's for entertainment only, so yes I like to believe but taking psychology into account as well Smile

Pelleas · 12/10/2020 07:30

No. In the course of my life I've met a few people who share my exact birthday - none of them have shared my personality.

Most horoscopes that purport to forecast the future are written in such a vague way that they could apply to almost any situation.

Ifailed · 12/10/2020 07:51

interestingly, the gravitational pull of 75 kg midwife on a 3kg baby 15cm apart is stronger than the gravitational pull of Uranus on the same baby. I remember the midwife who helped deliver one of sons was called Tracey, so presumably she should be included in his birth chart?

fluffums · 12/10/2020 07:59

"There's a lot that science can't explain, but where did Astrology come from? How was it decided that a planet rising through a certain area of the sky means that someone born at X time in Y place is a hard worker?"

Astrology is a form of astro-omen divination that's thousands of years old. In times when there were no newspapers etc people watched the stars and observed what happened. They put together correlations around when the sun was in a certain section of the sky, x happened. Or when mars rose early in the morning x happened. It developed over thousands of years through observation.

What is popularly known as astrology in the form of sun sign columns (which is "pop" and made up) in newspapers is a far cry from serious astrolgy which can be very helpful.

It is more than birth dates

FearlessSwiftie · 12/10/2020 08:50

Nope. I did when I was about 11 or 12 but now I don't. How do they even explain all this stuff? It just exists and you gotta believe it? No, thanks. I don't make fun of people believeing though, everyone has their own rights to choose what to believe. My grandma believes in astrology and I got her the book about it for her Birthday and made Smartshow 3d presentation about it with pics of her planets and signs etc. This year she'll get a necklace with her sign (she is Sagittarius) from me. Everyone chooses their beliefs.

Ironfloor269 · 12/10/2020 10:29

Astrology is a load of bullshit. I grew up with parents who believed in astrology and horoscopes. Frankly, it brought my life to the brink of ruin. They consulted charlatans a.k.a astrologers for every significant thing in my life and followed what they 'advised'. As I've experienced the whole thing, I can vouch for what a load of utter tosh astrology is.

I think it's for thickos.

GrandAltogether · 12/10/2020 10:37

And yet twin studies have shown no correlations between the 'astral charts' of those who were born in the same place, at the same time.

Excellent point, @Ifailed.

Also, Seth Shostak at SETI has pointed out that the magnetic effect of even a large planet like Jupiter was so attenuated by distance from earth that you would experience more of an effect from a household appliance.

So maybe the washing machine, dishwasher and microwave should also appear on the chart along with Tracey?

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/67008966_//_

"A clinical investigation was undertaken to challenge the commonly accepted view that the interval between the birth of the first and second twins should be preferably within 15 minutes and certainly no more than 30 minutes. During 1981 and 1982, 115 patients with live-born twins at 34 or more weeks' gestation underwent an attempted vaginal delivery at four regional perinatal centers. The interval between vaginal delivery of the first and second twins (mean, 21 minutes, range, one to 134 minutes) was 15 minutes or less in 70 (61%) cases and more than 15 minutes in 45 (39%) cases"

This is enough to change your Ascendant sign (for instance, if I were born three minutes earlier I'd have a different sign). It would definitely change the degree of your Ascendant.

gurteee · 12/10/2020 11:12

@Oliversmumsarmy

Likewise, if they have read their horoscope or chart or whatnot they might plan their life more like it suggests or be more searching of opportunities (e.g. they're told they will make money at 28 so they startle looking for promotions/new job/business opportunities at that age

Horoscopes guide. It isn’t supposed to replace free will.

The person who waits till 28 is missing the point. You can climb the career ladder then at 28 to make a leap forward would be easier

It isn’t there to replace free will.

Absolutely.

Actually, I was thinking of people born on exactly the same date.

However, most published horoscopes only refer to 'star signs'.

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/10/2020 00:52

Pelleas

I am talking about astrology based on exact times, dates and places of birth not horoscopes based purely on your star sign.

I would think it would be unheard of for twins to come out at the exact same time.

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/10/2020 01:15

A long time ago, someone I knew had a theory about astrology. There had been some stuff in the press around then about what you ate in pregnancy affecting your child, and her theory was that in the past (looong time past Grin) when all the food you ate was seasonal and locally grown and most people never moved more than 10 miles from where they were born, any dietary affect on the womb environment would be very seasonal and very affected by where you lived.

She also then pointed out that since the advent of tins, freezing, manufactured foods and flying stuff all over the world out of season, this would no longer hold true.

I thought it was an interesting theory. If e.g. summer babies were observed to have different personalities from winter babies, people would try to explain to themselves why. If they also noted the movement of the constellations and thought there was a correlation, I can see why astrology came to be.

cbt944 · 13/10/2020 01:57

I recently read some article online that pointed out the famous astrologer Susan Miller predicted that 2020 would be an excellent year!

Define “born”. If astrology works on a to-the-minute basis, this must be important. For a vaginal birth, is it the moment the head crowns? The head appears? The last toe leaves the birth canal? The baby takes its first breath? What the midwife chooses to write on the paperwork?

How about twins born via c-section. They’re both exposed to the outside world at the same time but one is removed from the uterus before the other. Are they born at different times in terms of astrology? What difference is there between sitting in a uterus open to the world and having being lifted from the uterus?

How does astrology account for time zones, daylight savings, inaccurate clocks?

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 13/10/2020 10:30

@ItsGoingTibiaK yes to all that! There's not really a moment of birth.

My DD was born around midnight-ish. A few minutes after she emerged and was checked and wrapped up, one midwife said: did anyone notice the time? Grin
As it was around midnight, I got to choose her birthday. I thought the 20th was nicer and more even and rounded than the 19th, so just after midnight on the 20th it was! We could have noted it as it as just before, on the 19th.

screentimebabe · 13/10/2020 16:07

for anyone interested (and this is very geeky) there is a full episode of the astrology podcast dedicated to the topic of twins:

It will not make a lot of sense to people who don't have more than a very basic grasp of astrology though!

CloudyVanilla · 13/10/2020 16:12

I believe that even without astrology there are many wonderful and fascinating things in the universe. I'm enamoured with humanity's unwavering ability and desire to interpret all around us and see even the mechanisms of the vast infinite universe as part of our human experience :)

So no I may not "believe" it, but I value it all the same.

CloudyVanilla · 13/10/2020 16:15

@WhereYouLeftIt that is so interesting!

Although I don't believe in astrology I am so different to my other 3 siblings and they are all spring summer born and I am the only Autumn winter baby. Will remember to ask my mum if she ate seasonally next time I see her :D

chunkyrun · 13/10/2020 16:15

No. I do not believe the entire of humanity can be lumped into 12 personality traits, based upon alignment of the stars at time of birth
