We want to love when dd goes to uni and are currently in the south. I'd love a big ish detached house with a big garden and off an estate for £650-700k .. any ideas on areas that are nice ?
Jobs are irrelevant as DH works from home and only needs to get to an airport a few times a year .

North West! Man airport nearby too.

Frazzled2207 · 01/09/2020 08:41

I was going to say north west.
Some really nice areas in Stockport and Trafford, also over the border in Cheshire.

Emma1962 · 01/09/2020 08:44

You won’t get much round Trafford for that money if you want a large garden & space. My friend had a similar budget moved to culceth. There’s some gorgeous villages around there but good links to mcr & Liverpool. I’d look more that way or homes chapel

IheartJKR · 01/09/2020 08:45

Suffolk

lastqueenofscotland · 01/09/2020 08:48

Nice bits of Manchester are seriously expensive. But other parts of the north west could work.

espressoontap · 01/09/2020 08:53

Chester or the Wirral

Burnout101 · 01/09/2020 08:53

Go just outside Cardiff and you can get gorgeous houses in really nice villages for that, then very close to Cardiff if you want a bit of city life and there's Cardiff airport and Bristol airport not too far.

Most places in Scotland. You could probably buy a castle for that is some places!

MadeForThis · 01/09/2020 08:56

Northern Ireland

Vinosaurus · 01/09/2020 08:57

Northumberland. There's some amazing houses in your price range on Rightmove, this for example.

BabyLlamaZen · 01/09/2020 08:57

Where is dd going to uni? Ideally you'd want her to be able to get back easily?

In the south - Suffolk

Further up in Yorkshire or Scotland would be stunning. The weather though!

BangingOn · 01/09/2020 08:58

Warwickshire, especially the north of the county. Lovely villages, great train connections and handy for Birmingham International.

IheartJKR · 01/09/2020 08:58

This village is beautiful.

If you want an estate then wales or northern scotland would be your best bet
SaffyWall · 01/09/2020 09:00

Something like this? It's a very pretty village and you'd have plenty of spare change to make it your own.

Just a budget and "amazing house" is too vague. What will be amazing to one poster could be totally shite for you. We need more. Do you have some idea of where you want to live? N? NE? SW? Where are your friends? Family? Interests? Do you want hills for walking and views? Sea for surfing? Rivers for fishing/kayaking? Relatively accessible so DC can still come back to visit or for holidays? Close enough to towns for shops or in the absolute middle of nowhere.

HashtagMakingMemories · 01/09/2020 09:09

Not sure about most places but anywhere you can't commute really easily to a city (specifically Edinburgh) is going to be a lot cheaper. I'd love to not have to commute, there's some great places to live in Perthshire etc.

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/09/2020 09:11

I lived in the Scottish Borders for a few years. Some beautiful houses to be had for a song and it’s a nice part of the world with reasonable access into Edinburgh and Glasgow.

But - what sort of lifestyle do you have / aspire to? Do you have friends you’d want to continue to see regularly, do you like to do outdoorsy or homebody things in your spare time or do you like arts, culture, fine dining etc?

The biggest loveliest house in the world is going to seem like a prison if it’s several hours train journey or drive from friends and you’re stuck in a small village when you prefer urban bustle.

Staffordshire. Lichfield is lovely and is only about 20 mins from Birmingham Airport

gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 09:25

Wow thanks for the replies .. for clarity I want off estate .. I currently live in a ne build which is worth about that money so def don't want close neighbours ! Will look at replies ..
We don't know where dd will go to uni yet and I guess I hadn't thought about being near her as I presume they always go miles away .. we are just fed up of the house prices in the south and fancy a change . What's Norfolk lie ? I saw my ideal house there 😍

Just about anywhere outside London and some parts of the south east.

Over 1400 to choose from here across a small section of northern England.

How to start narrowing it down depends on what you want - proximity to a city for amenities, or out in the wilds. The choice is endless.

Holdingtherope · 01/09/2020 09:27

Scotland east lothian

gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 09:27

By amazing I guess I mean something a bit different and special .. to get that in the south is £800-£1m ! 🙈
