I've decided I'd like an American man :)

I don't need to preface that this is lighthearted do I?! Well, just in case - it is!

My friend is married to the most lovely man from South Carolina. Another friend is married to the most interesting man from Maryland. And I've developed a crush on a former FBI agent who appears on a crime programme. I've therefore decided I'd like an American man. How do I find one? :)

There are quite a few non service American men in London. One of mine was big in marketing the other a doctor. Both most definitely not from Nigeria 😁

littlealexhorne · 17/08/2020 23:15

Following with interest - do you think you could find one who also has a brother for me OP?

VetOnCall · 17/08/2020 23:51

@Usernamealreadyexists Sorry, I've been at work all day and just saw this. Yes, my dogs and I moved to Canada 2 years ago next month! The original relationship (who was a Brit living in Canada) didn't work out, but I've been living with the truly lovely and amazing Canadian of my dreams for over a year now and have never been happier - I upgraded to a native model 😄 (no overlap in case that's how it comes across!).

@Yukkalye Tinder in the first instance, and then work once I was in Canada. It helps to be a bit crazy impulsive and willing and able to make a big move! Canadians are pretty uniformly awesome people.

I met my American husband at a party in London.

He's probably the least religious person I know despite having quite religious parents. Right now he's out at a local brewery with some English friends, probably drinking them under the table. He speaks several languages fluently including sarcasm.

He also drives a pickup truck and loves to get his chainsaw out

MouseholeCat · 18/08/2020 01:31

In case it's helpful, the US Embassy in London puts quite a few of its Foreign Service Officers in apartments near to East Putney tube station... or at least they did 3 years ago when I left the UK. Hang out in the pubs and bars around there on Tinder and you'll probably get a few matches.

I picked up my American DH in London- it was his first week as an international student and we joke that he clearly just chose the first British girl who'd give him her number and I was obviously just after the Greencard.

Despite him being a Democrat, we had some roaring early debates around the death penalty, gun ownership and socialism. Thankfully he became enlightened pretty quick!

Many of his family members asked me what Church I attended the first time I met them. He didn't forewarn me about that one as I guess he thought it was totally normal. The "correct" answer would have been different for each relative too.

Hoppinggreen · 18/08/2020 11:24

after my A levels me and 6 friends went to Greece and found ourselves in a hotel that was opposite an American army base
7 18 year old girls and 800 American soldiers - what could go wrong?
Kept in touch with a few as they were shipping out to Iraq and I became an absolute legend at Uni when a load of them came to visit me after being posted to The UK
They were absolute gentlemen I have to say but not big drinkers, had dodgy dress sense and were a bit racist.

I thought Tinder was full of weirdos - may have to sign up to it today!

Note to self - avoid the religious and racists ones Grin

And those who are widowed, have one teenage or older child and work or have anything to do with oil.

I played along with one of them. He had a whole website up about his multi million dollar company with him as ceo which he had on his profile and which he clearly sent out to anyone who swiped on him. Being the novice and naive on those days I went into said site and there he was in every pose you could imagine as ceo. Sadly i also think its where they got my email address from to later be sent plenty of these pay me the money or else emails. But lets move on from that.....

I did a little investigating on him, as surely this is the norm these days, to find out he only opened his webpage a week prior (although his business had been running for years being so successful and all) and when I traced the ip address, it was registered to a local vet nearby. This did make some sense as to why I matched with him being in the USA when I had a 20km radius on my searches. So i kept messaging him and every reply I referred to a vet pun. He blocked me after a while Grin

Well anyway, that was my short stint with a non American American but if anyone knows a real one around my turf (see I am not in the UK so don't worry folks I won't poach your finds), as i do quite find that accent quite sexy. And Irish too. So any Irish ones you want to send my way will be okay too.

i have an accent too. Not Irish or American of course but perhaps I should add that on to my list of amazing personality, good wit and charm. (Worth a try isn't it......)

Luckily you were clever enough to do some investigating and didn't fall for his lies!

Yes I do love an Irish accent too!

I would definitely be using your accent to my advantage - everyone loves a sexy accent!!

Vodkacranberryplease · 18/08/2020 18:03

I love an Irish accent too! But after leaving my tinder and bumble on by accident extensive research in Galway and Dublin I can confidently confirm that while Irish men are the best fun ever the relationship ones get snapped up young and good looking ones don't exist are a little thin on the ground.

Aww my DH is Irish and I can confirm, very good looking (he could be Paul McGann’s younger brother.) I did however snap him up when we were a young 23.
Vodkacranberryplease · 18/08/2020 21:24

There you go! Snapped up early! Good for you, Id love a nice Irish man. The good ones are hilarious AND lovely.

Yukkalye · 18/08/2020 21:29

My internet is being strange so apologies for not responding to posts. I've hijacked dd's laptop just to tell you all that the other bloke who I confuse with Bobby is called Scott Reitz. I'd be more than happy with either of them should any of you happen to know them :)

@Vodkacranberryplease he has some lovely single cousins Grin Galway/Mayo area

Yukkalye · 18/08/2020 21:39

SillyUn is your username a play on an Irish boy's name? Very clever if so! And, er, I'm a bit hesitant to say this in case I'm considered undiscerning (is that even a word?) but I like an Irish accent too :). I'm really very easy to please!

OP posts:
SillyUnMurphy · 18/08/2020 21:43

@Yukkalye it is indeed but more specifically a play on my absolute favourite Irishman ever Cillian Murphy (sorry DH)

Vodkacranberryplease · 18/08/2020 21:44

Hmmm... I think a bity young though sadly Grin

Yukkalye · 18/08/2020 21:49

Aha - thought so! About the name I mean. I've just googled Cillian Murphy - I'm with Vodka. Too young and too pretty! He's all yours Silly :)

Catching up with posts now that my internet is behaving. I'm wildly impressed with your investigatory skills isthis. I wouldn't have had a clue.

@Annist

Nooooo servicemen....that's really not ideal. I'd give any very churchy ones a wide berth too. Culturally Boston men are the closest to Brits. I'm American woman who much preferred a Brit and here I am.
Annist how did you find your Brit?

That is indeed helpful Mousehole. Sunrise we need to hit East Putney.

Can I put in a vote for Australian men? My DH is rather lovely and best of all he doesn’t drink and is quite happy to drive to allow me to imbibe as much as I wish. Good times.

Word of warning about Irishmen - great for a night on the beers, much hilarity usually involved and usually up for fun and games thereafter - but not marriage material. As said above, the good uns are snapped up early. The ones left ..... you’ll enjoy the craic but don’t expect to be taken home to Mammy anytime soon.

Cybercubed · 18/08/2020 23:21

Americans are on average probably the best looking nationality in the world for me.
