I've decided I'd like an American man :)

I don't need to preface that this is lighthearted do I?! Well, just in case - it is!

My friend is married to the most lovely man from South Carolina. Another friend is married to the most interesting man from Maryland. And I've developed a crush on a former FBI agent who appears on a crime programme. I've therefore decided I'd like an American man. How do I find one? :)

I admit I didn't read your last posts before I posted my warnings.

So, you are considering Trump. I'm concerned for you OP. Is this a firm of self-flagellation.

Fefifofaff · 16/08/2020 06:14

Go to St John's Wood and hang around the American School in hopes of landing a single dad 😁

I know this is bigoted, fruitist to be specific, but avoid the orange ones shaped like pears who look like they suck lemons.

I just spat my coffee out!
😂😂😂

sanityisamyth · 16/08/2020 07:41

Rather you than me. Couldn't think of anything worse!

HM1984 · 16/08/2020 08:58

I met a lovely man in Florida once. I was with my husband and kids in a starbucks and he was alone at the table watching us. He then started talking to us about his life (he was elderly, forgot to mention that) and he was talking about the love he had for his wife who died. It was really beautiful, I always thought american men were like Trump-ish but this man was just so....sweet! He had tears in his eyes as he was recalling his memories with his wife and kids at our age. I always say to my other half when I die you better speak of me like that! So he is my American man 🥰

36degrees · 16/08/2020 09:04

I met mine in a bar! He was lovely, now sadly married to another woman but it was great fun while it lasted.

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/08/2020 09:53

well good luck with your search i dated one many years ago and he was great fun, i met his parents when they came over and they were glorious. his mother told me i should get him to buy me a mink coat, and then told him (and the rest of the restaurant) she'd told me. i think they'd have been brilliant in-laws. i had a few american business contacts they were all very different, but one in particular was fabulous, very proud of his italian heritage and the funniest man i've ever met, if he hadn't been married with 5 kids and interested in me i wouldn't have kicked him out of bed if I'd had the opportunity. the funniness came from the directness and the telling it how it was, there were no "subtle" filters which I found very refreshing

PenguindreamsofDraco · 16/08/2020 10:18

Christ I've got one, you can have him, he's annoying me enormously at the moment Grin

Just don't discuss American politics or why we don't do air conditioning over here, you can learn from my mistakes Grin.

Gurufloof · 16/08/2020 10:36

OP have you thought of a Canadian instead, similar but different and oh so polite.

TheId · 16/08/2020 10:48

American Air Force bases in the UK are your best bet.
In my dim and distant past I found it was quite easy to pick up American men in my local town from the base.
Religious ones were often to be found in the local evangelical church and less religious ones in the bars.
They told me that it was forbidden to fraternise with female American officers and thus relationships off base were kind of encouraged.
In my experience they were rather charming and polite and had a tendency to turn up with flowers on dates and pull chairs out for you and be a bit less likely to want to go straight to shagging than your average Brit.
But in the end I married a Brit. I think it is probably easier. Divided by a common language and all that.

TheId · 16/08/2020 10:53

So in short move to East Anglia

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 16/08/2020 11:17

@sanityisamyth that’s a bit unfair. America is a big country-there’ll be some decent men there

Yukkalye · 16/08/2020 11:23

Morning all, lots more tips, thank you :).

Targetting US Air Force bases in the UK is a brill idea. By targetting I mean looking for an American dh - thought I better explain that in case there's some algorithm thing somewhere that will have flagged up my words, and next thing will be the fbi knocking on my door. Although actually ....

Fef St Johns Wood isn't a million miles away from me, I could give that one a go. But again, I'm slightly worried I'll get arrested for hanging round schools. Also, are there children at school at the minute? Hmm, need to think that one through a bit.

Jings I can't remember his name offhand but I'll let you know - the programme is on pretty often. However, please bear in mind that I saw him first :).

HM that's a lovely story. My friend's dh speaks of her like that (and she's not even dead yet), and does all the chair pulling out, helping her into coats, holding doors stuff etc.

Cherry that made me laugh. Not really considering Trump although I did wonder if I could befriend him (briefly) and get a green card out of him. Then I decided I'd probably kill him within seconds and scupper any chances of getting into USA once and for all.

Penguin what a kind offer - I'll pm you my address :). I'll only keep him as a practice run and then you can have him back. Why is he annoying you? And Sanity why do you say that - is it Penguin's Dh annoying you too?!

Guru I hadn't actually considered a Canadian but my late dh was brought up in Canada until he was 8. He was a very lovely man so, yes, I guess Canadians can go on my list :).

Yukkalye · 16/08/2020 13:04

@JingsMahBucket - the ex agent is Bobby Chacon :)

I think there's another one I like who looks similar - I get them mixed up! I'll pay closer attention next time I'm watching :)

Last year I was on holiday in the US with my DH . I had an incident in a Starbucks with a guy that was just like a scene from a rom com. I went straight and told my husband that he was stopping me from marrying my next one and moving to NY. He had the good grace to apologise! Grin

GuiltyBark · 16/08/2020 13:13

I did a lot of online flirting with American men when dating. They're lovely x

Fefifofaff · 16/08/2020 13:35

Probably safer to go with the air bases, you don't want to get in trouble for going after slightly too young American men 😂

But school starts again in two weeks...

Zippy1510 · 16/08/2020 13:40

My DH is from Maryland. He is a democrat and an atheist, which is a plus.

Yukkalye · 16/08/2020 14:19

Zippy how did you find him? Are there OLD sites where you can specify American men?!

OP posts:
pointythings · 16/08/2020 14:20

Fefiffofaff problem with going after the air bases is that it's a self selecting demographic, which means a lot of very right wing Trump follower types. That's fine if you are ok with that, but it could be a problem.

Yukkalye · 16/08/2020 14:20

I guess it could be a bit hit and miss - I heed your warnings about evangelist types, and gun carrying ones. But I'm prepared to do research and share my findings :)

OP posts:
Yukkalye · 16/08/2020 14:22

X posted with you Pointy. Yes, airbases could be risky couldn't they.

FunTimes2020 · 16/08/2020 14:52

Loving your thread, your posts make me laugh, OP! If you fancy widening your net further, and you want to add to American and Canadian, I recommend Greek men! Also very direct, say what they mean and very romantic!

Yukkalye · 16/08/2020 18:28

Oh really Fun? Tell me more! Actually (without wishing to sound as if any old man will do) I do like Greek men - sucker for dark handsome men. Where do I find one of them then? I can see busy times ahead!
