I've decided I'd like an American man :)

I don't need to preface that this is lighthearted do I?! Well, just in case - it is!

My friend is married to the most lovely man from South Carolina. Another friend is married to the most interesting man from Maryland. And I've developed a crush on a former FBI agent who appears on a crime programme. I've therefore decided I'd like an American man. How do I find one? :)

I found one!! I mean he's 65 (even I'm not quite that old yet), and he's online. But it's a start right?!

Watch any of the 90 Day Fiancé programmes. It might put you off!
I've not heard of that programme Dee, I'll see if I can catch an episode.

I've just realised my "even I'm not that old yet" comment may cause offence :(. Definitely isn't meant to, and I'm an old one myself :)

I had a very brief relationship with an american many years ago. It all came crashing down at the point where it came to shagging and I discovered that his equipment was undersized, extremely oddly shaped and he clearly hadn’t read the manual (so he hadn’t a clue what to do with it).

I don’t think the above is standard for american men however.

I once dated and America exchange military student. He was gorgeous and had an amazing body but he was a bit dull. I lost interest once I got over looking at his admittedly perfect bod.

Vodkacranberryplease · 25/08/2020 20:32

@HermioneMakepeace

You don't seem to get normal, run-of-the-mill people in the US. They're either highly educated, worldly and interesting or... they are the People of Walmart.
Haha so very true! In London I only meet the first kind. In the US I should think they are mostly the second. And am I allowed to mention that some are a tad on the big side?

😂 I'm quite into this show.

My American CEO from Tinder might very well be a friend of Micheal.

I'd be happy to take over the admiring duties :)

I've found another one! Have you all infiltrated OLD and set up some fake US profiles? . This one has lived here for ages but is originally from the US. That'll do. He seems a bit grumpy though.

I met a nice American engineer yesterday, I thought of you lot but he’s going back to America next week. I do have his email and number though (for professional reasons)

Oh Hopping that's lovely of you :). Give him my number - a lot could happen between now and next week!

I had a very dodgy friend request on Fakebook, he also claims he is from the USA. He doesn't have a very American sounding name and he is working in Yemen. His photo (which I very much think is stolen) does not match up at all.

I really think these catfishers are dropping the ball here. If you are going to do something, do things to the best of your ability I say.

The friend request name and the profile when I clicked on to have a squizz are two different names.

I think men worldwide are jumping on the bandwagon here, knowing we are keen to meet American men. Grin

I will give Coltee a miss though.

I am fussy and don't want just any old American.

ChaBishkoot · 26/08/2020 13:38

DH is American but I met him in the UK (he was here on a Master’s course). We were at the same University. We are the same ethnicity though (and share a mother tongue that I speak well and he speaks less well).
He found it impossible to live in the UK- it was too small, too inefficient and he found the lack of ambition very frustrating. I love the U.K. but we have done stints in both countries and now live on the US East Coast.
On our first date we got into a big argument. He pronounces the word ‘route’ as ‘root’ and I told him he was being very stupid.

ChaBishkoot · 26/08/2020 13:38

Sorry he pronounces it as ‘ROUT’ not ‘ROOT’.

isthismylifenow · 26/08/2020 13:48

This does bug me somewhat.

Please tell me he pronouces the H in herbs. This bugs me somewhat too.

Maybe after remembering this I will put the Irishman back on top spot. I probably won't understand a word if truth is told, but I will just sit there, listen and swoon.

isthismylifenow · 26/08/2020 13:49

Oh I very nearly forgot to tell you all.

I have added New Zealanders to my list.

I watched Virgin River and very much feel I should meet Martin Henderson.

DinosApple · 26/08/2020 14:15

DH's best man and good friend was American. Lovely guy, absolutely hilarious and told the best stories. Literally tears down your face laughing every time you met up. He was ex military and about 20 years older than DH (with a lovely English wife), and reminded me of Iggy Pop 😂. We miss him a lot.

Anyway his theory was that you either get really nice do-anything-for-you Americans or total assholes coming over here in the military. Not much in between.

We used to get loads of American customers off the local base. They were lovely to chat to, really friendly and so polite.

So, I suggest a customer facing role in a garage should do it. The longer they leave their car, the longer you can chat!

ChaBishkoot · 26/08/2020 14:46

Nope no H in herb. Sigh. It’s a good thing I love him eih?

I am in the auto industry. Smile Sadly I am not near an American air base. Or even in the UK where there seems to be a small pocket of them.

Sigh.

Not to worry. I have Netflix so a fairly good compromise.

Yes Chabish, I dare say this can be overlooked. Jusy call them mint, basil, rosemary etc instead 😀
Yukkalye · 26/08/2020 19:05

I'm so envious of all you with your American men/partners! I work for a charity which responds to international crises - I'm wondering if I can somehow persuade someone to take me on as part of the emergency response team. But I fear this is far fetched, bearing in mind I'm scared of loud noises and have no sense of direction - I'd be rubbish in the event of an explosion.

I think the first American man I mentioned up thread must be one of those Nigerian scammers mentioned here earlier. He called me "dear" and an alarm went off in my head! So thank you fellow mn-ers for educating me in the ways of the would-be conmen :).

It struck me today that my first serious boyfriend now lives in USA. He's sort of famous in academic circles so I could probably contact him quite easily. I'm wondering how to say "hi, I know we haven't spoken in nearly 30 years, and I know you married the woman you cheated on me with, and I dislike you intensely, but do you know any fit American men you could introduce me to? Thanks a lot".

Yes? No? :)

Oh don’t talk to me about his pronunciation of basil. I wince.

Cupidity · 27/08/2020 01:24

I never understood the attraction of American men - however lockdown has introduced me to Governor Cuomo through his very wonderful daily briefings and it is now my favourite daily TV programme. No other man could make a daily PowerPoint presentation quite so riveting.

SeaToSki · 27/08/2020 01:52

My lovely DH is American. We met at Uni about 25 years ago. We moved to the East Coast and I now have 4 very American DC. They amuse my parents with their expressions and I sometimes have to translate.
