How many countries have you visited?

Hi, my friend from school is very well travelled and is now a high end travel agent. She was saying recently that she has been to 47 countries.

Many of them are long haul types ie Australia, Japan, lots of Caribbean and Europe and some really exotic places such as Bora Bora.

I worked out I’ve been to 12 countries which I think is probably more than average. I have an auntie in her 60’s who has never left the country and know a few others who are the same.

It would be really interesting to hear about other people’s experiences. Included are England/Ireland/Scotland/Wales.

Whilst I was very impressed with my friend’s tally, she said one of her bosses has been to almost 70. I just couldn’t imagine even wanting to go to that many places!

Thanks for reading.

About 30, depending on how you classify the USSR and Russia. I've been to both, and to complicate things further while in the USSR I stayed in Kazakhstan, then part of the USSR but now independent. Not sure if that counts one, two or three countries.

I'm inclined to count countries which are culturally distinct, although I see that that's subjective. So in my head I would include Tibet and Hong Kong (and Scotland, for that matter), though they're not in my "official" total.

Seems a lot of ppl on here need to look up countries as such. England, Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland are NOT. Countries as such. They are technically the U.K.!!

Republic of Ireland- yes it is a different country Confused

Destroyedpeople · 08/07/2020 16:00

Yes they're countries as in 'nations' just not separate states.

carorganiser1 · 08/07/2020 16:04

32, most outside of Europe

Destroyedpeople · 08/07/2020 16:08

Yes they are nations. If you are not sure Google 'nation vs state'.
Fgs it's lecture #1 in first year undergrad international politics.

HollysBush · 08/07/2020 16:09

Four

carorganiser1 · 08/07/2020 16:11

@Destroyedpeople I never said it wasn't a. 'Nation' I said it's NOT an "independent nation"

Destroyedpeople · 08/07/2020 16:11

Fir example the old Yugoslavia was the state...Serbia Croatia etc were nations.

In the uk the uk is the state...England Wales Scotland Ireland are nations.

The ussr was a state it's constituent countries'were nations..

Do you see.?

Zenithbear · 08/07/2020 16:14

41 in 4 continents
If next years holidays go as planned I will have been to 6 more.

carorganiser1 · 08/07/2020 16:15

I never said it wasn't a nation I said it wasn't an INDEPENDENT nation as such and therefore not a country in its own right. It doesn't meet the criteria.

I do see...

HarlanWillYouStopNamingNuts · 08/07/2020 16:15

Thank you, Destroyed, that's it in a nutshell.

GlamGiraffe · 08/07/2020 16:15

I seem to have travelled a lot but so often its to the same countries. (9 times to the same place last year to work for example.)
If I had to tot up the number of flights I've been on that really would would be scary!

speakout · 08/07/2020 16:16

I first went abroad when I was 19- my parents had no money.
So that is all adult travel I have paid for ( mostly myself- some work travel)
That is 27 different countries- but many many trips- Greece alone 11 times, Turkey 5 times, Thailand 6 times, USA 4 times.

So probably travelled abroad over 200 times, but only to 27 different countries.

Nosuchluck · 08/07/2020 16:17

I forgot Turkey

Destroyedpeople · 08/07/2020 16:18

Nation = country. Doesn't have to be an independent state.
Of course some nations don't have a country...just to add confusion.
Like Kurdistan.

Nosuchluck · 08/07/2020 16:18

That's like me, I've been to Italy and Greece about 10 times each.

Popjam · 08/07/2020 16:20

20

DestinationFkd · 08/07/2020 16:21

Being in the forces, a fair few worldwide and literally all of Europe.
All for free too.

carorganiser1 · 08/07/2020 16:21

Nation does not equal country

Quebec is a nation but not a country...

Scotland
Wales
Northern Ireland...are not countries

They are NOT listed in countries of the world.

Destroyedpeople · 08/07/2020 16:22

Oh I must have arrived in Amsterdam about 39 times lol....and Greece...

Destroyedpeople · 08/07/2020 16:24

I think that England Scotland an Wales are countries Caro. I know it's a bit...hmm ..sometimes.
Perhaps London should be a different country as well....

Lightsabre · 08/07/2020 16:26

About 70+. We were lucky enough to get 8 months unpaid leave once and travelled round the world. On top of that, we travelled a lot before and after as I didn't have ds until late 30's.

We can't afford the really big trips now due to mortgage and teenager but hope to travel again properly in a few years. Also glad I travelled when younger - it's a slightly different experience now and I wouldn't have had the stamina needed now to backpack through India for example. It would be more tailored with higher star hotels.
