How many countries have you visited?

Hi, my friend from school is very well travelled and is now a high end travel agent. She was saying recently that she has been to 47 countries.

Many of them are long haul types ie Australia, Japan, lots of Caribbean and Europe and some really exotic places such as Bora Bora.

I worked out I’ve been to 12 countries which I think is probably more than average. I have an auntie in her 60’s who has never left the country and know a few others who are the same.

It would be really interesting to hear about other people’s experiences. Included are England/Ireland/Scotland/Wales.

Whilst I was very impressed with my friend’s tally, she said one of her bosses has been to almost 70. I just couldn’t imagine even wanting to go to that many places!

Thanks for reading.

  1. Everytime I go to book a holiday, I end up going back to the same countries, albeit different locations. I really want to visit different countries, but I always feel a strong pull to the Med.
sashh · 08/07/2020 07:01

My mum wouldn't fly so we drove to places like the south of France, occasionally we would have detour into another country so I 'collected' a couple then.

I've also changed planes in a couple of places so I'm only counting the ones I actually got out of the airport.

England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Mann
France
Germany
The Netherlands
Belgium
Luxembourg
Switzerland
Australia
Singapore
Indonesia (Bali)
Mauritius
Argentina
Ecuador
Chile
Uruguay
Spain
Italy
Andorra

I'd love to see more but due to health and financial reasons I probably won't.

My brother has never left Europe and his main holiday is usually in Brittany, which there is nothing wrong with, but he lives in Cornwall which is so similar.

My mum used to say there must be gypsy blood somewhere in the family (when she wasn't claiming I must have Viking blood).

My aunt emigrated to Australia as a 'Ten pound pome' and my grandmother went to visit her a few years later on a cruise ship, she had a detour cruise around the med for 2 weeks and the actual ship made a few visits to places like South Africa on its way.

So before 1970 my grandmother must have visited quite a few countries, which would be fairly unusual for a working class woman.

  1. Still so many more I want to see. Am supposed to be going to Malta in September which would make it 70, but it’s not in the no-quarantine zone at the moment...

Loveinatimeofcovid · 08/07/2020 07:30

About a dozen? I mostly fly between Australia and the U.K. but have spent a lot of weekends away in various places, I can’t really remember all the trips tbh, most of them were in Paris but I remember flying on a few weekends away so I guess I have quite a few lostweekdnds in various European cities. The joys of being young.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 08/07/2020 07:30

About 40 I think. I've lived abroad as a child and adult and travel a lot for work. Plenty more still on my list though!
