I can't help but love the 'little bit of bread and no cheese' song of the yellowhammer. And if you read Enid Blyton as a kid you'll always easily identify the song of the chaffinch: she described it as 'chip chip chip cherry erry erry chippy here we are!' I've never mistaken it since.

I lived in the New England area for a while and their local barred owls are loved for their hoot which sounds like: 'who cooks for you, who cooks for you all!' That sound, coupled with the slightly mournful haunting of the great horned owls in the woods, brings back such evocative memories of my time in the US. They didn't have any tawnies, though!

They sound like they have boots on when they land on my flat roof.

I can 'hear' a wood pigeon right now but it's call doesn't fit with 'my toe hurts Betty'. The call is too drawn out for that.

Was just going to write that I hear it in a Frank spencer voice too!

Well, if you can hear it, you will always hear it. Even when you don't want to. And it will slowly drive you mad.

But if you can't hear it you are probably safe.
