Here's a new thread for discussing aircon, aubergines, and Goth music.

@Orangeblossom78 Maybe it will, maybe it won't, is excellent journalism. Really covering all bases there Smile

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 23/06/2020 09:34

I've done c25k twice and stopped after the 5k part. Can't seem to keep it going after that. I only ever jogged, not built for running. I've been for one jog since lockdown and a couple of walks. I like to swim but even in normal times the nearest pool is a half hour drive and that's enough to be a barrier to frequent use.
Trying to persuade the DCs we need to go the beach, as I like a sea swim, but only one of mine is keen on beaches... My dream is to live by a lake I can swim in (none of those in this part of the country really).

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/06/2020 09:35

I think they''ll be small hot spots as it were - and that's why track and tracing systems and local lock downs will be needed.

At least Englands GCSE and A-level exams might be later this year to make up time though DH thinks that it may cause additional problems for university recruitment - not sure what the plan for Wales is.

SpnBaby1967 · 23/06/2020 09:39

I really enjoyed doing c25k, but I hated running outside so only did it on a treadmill at the gym. Now I'm back working full time I just dont have the time for the gym so cancelled my membership. I really miss running, doubt I could do it for 60 seconds now let alone 30 minutes.

I'd love to visit LIDO PONTY - would be bit hard to get to from here main problem is no one else is that keen on outdoor swimming. Though last location there was a swimming pool with a door to outside and they all loved that bit.

dkl55 · 23/06/2020 09:49

Checking in
@mylittleyumyum I did see an icke video recently. Some of the things he says sound possible but that's the trouble and I think it's done purposefully - Ie scatter a few reasonable sounding elements in - and then add in a few quite crazy aspects. That way you draw people in to something making it more believable.

Nihiloxica · 23/06/2020 09:57

I have no truck with David Icke, but the last few years have made me aware of how people are discredited and how it works far more by social pressure

"David Icke is crazy and a Nazi and right-thinking people don't listen to him."

I have never paid any attention to him or read what he actually says, I've just taken other people's word that he's not worth listening to.

And that's not especially smart.

He was ruled way beyond the pale before the recent trend for social media purity spirals, though.

What's a social media purity spiral?

dkl55 · 23/06/2020 10:08

@nihiloxoca - totally agree actually. Just brand someone alt right or a bigot and everyone ignores them.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/06/2020 10:10

unherd.com/2020/01/cast-out-how-knitting-fell-into-a-purity-spiral/

I came across term on FWR and radio 4 - seemed to fit.

mylittleyumyum · 23/06/2020 10:11

It's amazing how easy it is to 'discredit' someone. It's frightening how many scientists have been silenced in the past for alternative thinking. Social media's crusade to shut down 'fake news' seems borne of panic to me, people are being encouraged to think the same.

I am very open to being convinced so I'm enjoying this foray into alternative thinking.

It's also good to have balance from other sources, such as you guys here to stop me being sucked completely into a war against the government :D

MinesaPinot · 23/06/2020 10:18

Morning all. Sitting in garden and it is hot already. Mind you there's a little breeze so I suppose a bit of natural air conditioning. Went up our village high street and it was lovely, people pottering around as usual, minor queuing for the bakers and our Costa has reopened for takeaways. it felt like proper normal rather than the dreaded new normal.

HesterShaw1 · 23/06/2020 10:19

Morning I have a bastard migraine

Sorry, it's rude to use jargon like that and just presume other people will be familiar with it. It's a terrible habit of mine. Blush

I highly recommend the Radio 4 programme linked by Bath. It's really entertaining and thought provoking.

@mylittleyumyum I think what worries me about it all is - sure there are certainly crazies out there and people who spout nonsense or horrible things. But over the centuries our knowledge has advanced because some people are willing to put themselves out there and go against the grain with new ideas and therefore advancing our knowledge (to much ridicule - the earth is round, gravity, bacteria and viruses etc). If people are silenced because they go against group think it's not a good thing!

BarkandCheese · 23/06/2020 10:24

The thing with David Icke, or others like him, is occasionally they are right. I totally agree our government, and most governments overall aren’t competent enough to pull these kinds of things off. When you look at proven of very plausible conspiracy theories it’s usually being done by background people, generally secret services or the military, who are better organised and who crucially have very loyal members and much more time to dedicate than busy, high turnover governments.

dkl55 · 23/06/2020 10:25

Unherd is a great website actually. Very good news stories.

I Love a good conspiracy theory ! I do think that the figures that the Govt gives out are seriously slewed depending on they want the citizens to behave Grin. Its been quite eye-opening how quickly we, as a country, were so obedient to giving up our freedoms without question, obediently forming those orderly queues and following The Roolz without ever once asking 'why?'. obviously there were some bloody awkward people (me and most of us on these threads!) who asked 'why' but we were the minority.

In other news, our local biscuit making factory (which makes for McVities) has had several Covid cases - wonder if the dementors will pick up on this and stop buying McVities biscuits?!!!

mylittleyumyum · 23/06/2020 10:41

Is it the governments who are doing the controlling, or are they just puppets?

I do like that Unherd site. Lots of thought provoking articles.

Bill Gates is very keen to vaccinate us all...

Allflightscancelled · 23/06/2020 10:47

Ah thanks @Nihiloxica and @LadyOfTheImprovisedBath

Not rude at all, and thanks for the article. Makes perfect sense, now Smile

ExpletiveDelighted · 23/06/2020 10:48

Morning all, just checking in, it's very hot here and I've just got back from a stint at the allotment, which has been such a blessing this year. Walked past the local primary school as all the kids were arriving, lovely to hear them all chattering away. I am really, really hoping for swimming pools to reopen soon, I've got a very frustrated teenage club swimmer.

Allflightscancelled · 23/06/2020 10:51

On following the roolz unquestioningly. I met some people I think of as bright and sensible the other day, for the first time in about six months. They were going on about how we're in the process of making history etc etc etc and wondering how the future will judge us.

I said "I think history will decide the world went collectively absolutely bonkers" and they laughed as if it was a completely outrageous point of view and I must be joking. Confused

I’m not a rabid anti vaxxer but I am a ‘why’ person. Why do we still routinely vaccinate for polio when there have been zero cases in Europe for decades and less than 100 worldwide last year? DD can have that vaccination if she decides to go trekking in Pakistan or Afghanistan when she’s older.
