Here's a new thread for discussing aircon, aubergines, and Goth music.

@BarkandCheese

The sanitiser in Bluewater was rank too, it smelled like vinegar. Fortunately I’ve got some stuff from the US which is cinnamon scented so I used that to get rid of the smell. It’s a small thing but horrible smelling or sticky texture sanitiser is going to put people off using it.
My student job was hospital admin and it was around the time that sanitiser came in for general use on wards. So I'd handle manky dusty records and a trolly, gunk my hands and then pass on the manky dusty records. I was never quite convinced that sanitising my hands like that was terribly productive. It did encourage a lot of hand washing to get the layers of gunk off!

Indeed, why ever leave the house when you can just stay at home and be SAFE?

Wondering how @HesterShaw1's headache and @Jourdain11 are feeling today with the heat. It feels very oppressive.

I work with people just released from prison and it's funny how the government is allegedly throwing money at homelessness during the pandemic (for obvious reasons a lot of my gentlemen callers are released street homeless) but no accomodation providers seem to want to touch it.
Possibly because last time I rang the central referral point most of the accomodation local to me was ringfenced for our NHS heroes....and never used.

Bollss · 25/06/2020 12:22

I'm wondering whether it's acceptable to get the paddling pool for just me while DS is at nursery.....

They had a water fight there yesterday I was asked to pack many sets of spare clothes today Grin

rookiemere · 25/06/2020 12:25

Well if the air bridges get put in place , I'm off to Majorca next month and sod Nicola if it makes her cry.
I may cry myself in mediterranean heat - not sure I'm well equipped to cope with that sort of temperature- but rookiepere has the bit between his teeth and is insistent we go.

Plus if the r rates go up again, which inevitably they will, I need a dose of holiday memories to help me cope.

AnxiousElephant77 · 25/06/2020 12:28

The paddling pool has been a game changer these two days, so I say do it!! When they get home you can pretend it was for them Grin

Nihiloxica · 25/06/2020 12:31

So what is happening, Cattermole?

I had a client last year, a young man just out of prison with serious issues - former addict, mental health problems.

He was both potentially dangerous and extremely vulnerable.

I said to him that he should stay in good contact with his probation officer because he was not really employable, a risk for getting no PIP due to the nature of his mental illness.

But apparently he had no support, he told me. Nothing from probation, no charity. I was so worried about him but there was nowhere for me to refer him to.

It really felt like there was a short window to help him get on his feet or he was going to end up back on heroin.

I have never felt more useless. I really hope (again at hope) he is OK.

It's good to know some former prisoners have you. I was (probably very naively) shocked by how little could be done.

I cope better with dry Mediteranean heat than humid British heat. Plus we don't have refreshing outdoor swimming pools.

I think I must have pinned more hope on some school time than I realised until it was dashee because it was the hope of some punctuation of time. A change of scenery will do a world of good.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/06/2020 12:36

I suppose to avoid using the shop stuff could just take own little bottle and use that when they ask? I might do that.

Cattermole · 25/06/2020 12:38

@Nihiloxica - nothing. Big fat nothing.

Fill in referral forms and forms to present to the Homelessness Prevention Teams but the bottom line is there is just not the housing there, whether that's temporary accomodation or a B&B or a pod or whatever, there is just nowhere.
I suspect a lot of service users think they don't get support from statutory bodies because they don't get a good outcome but in my experience you can spend hundreds of hours trying to sort something out and it comes down to...there just is nothing to give them. There are too many people chasing the same thing and we live in a free-market economy where landlords would prefer security and pound notes to local authority promises and people whose credit history or past behaviour is rackety.

One lad last week said he had three tins of beans to see him through the weekend because the mice in his tent had eaten into all his fresh food.
It breaks your heart.

NothingIsWrong · 25/06/2020 12:40

R rates are bullshit

Sky news all over the German rate going up to 2.88

Not a peep now it's back down to 0.72

Bollss · 25/06/2020 12:41

@Cattermole oh that is so sad Sad

KaronAVyrus · 25/06/2020 12:51

The R rate is just another bullshit thing to keep quivering in our own homes.

Just had to turn Jeremy Vine off - he really is the BBC’s chief dementor.

Cattermole · 25/06/2020 12:52

I know. Another one of my young men (he's in his 30s) and before lockdown we made him a cup of coffee. Bloody awful coffee, too, it's the stuff I buy for "office" (DH is a coffee snob at home so instant is NOT WELCOME HERE) it was legging down and I made him a brew and put his coat on the radiator and we chatted bollocks for a while.
This is a chap who we were initially told was a risk to staff and we should get the police up with tasers if he presented.
Sat there drenched to the skin with his coffee and said "nobody's ever made me a brew when I've come to an office before".
He says the worst thing about being street homeless in the winter is the wind on your tent...it's relentless, he says, it's just white noise all the time.
He's terrified of COVID. Thinks he'll die in his tent, on his own, and no one will ever know. He's drinking again now because at least he won't know about it then.

All that work, all that progress he had made. All gone now.

Bollss · 25/06/2020 12:53

It IS different isn't it?!

I only lasted a couple of hours out yesterday, but I can stay out all day on holiday?! I'm not someone who's in the pool all day either....hmm!

Blustery in the north east too
Got to shop for food

Might get a few More plants and deffo some paint for bench and Gate.

WArning..gross content coming up
Mr Dowser has made some vegan cheese, bless him. While it tastes ok, it not cheese as we know it. It’s made from cashew nuts and sauerkraut ffs..still he’s happy , munching away with it spread on oatcakes with some dodgy leather look ham on it.

Will probably pop into dds garden at some point , see the gorgeous grandkids and discuss michael rosens recovery and the part I ( possibly) played in it.
( I sent him some healing energy through my machine).

The older I get the more I’m happy to laze in the sun and do nothing
Utterly shocking

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/06/2020 13:17

I have bought paint for my living room, paint for my hall, stairs and landing, fence paint, a couple of small bushes and some bedding plants for my garden...

Can’t even be arsed to get it all out of the car, let alone do anything else with it.

What does it taste like in coffee? Might come in handy for the dementors when we lock down for the second wave

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 25/06/2020 13:22

Last night bbc news was warning us all not to leave hand sanitizer in cars as it could explode.

Fire chiefs have come out this morning with no they won't.

Aww cattermole..just so sad
Would ear plugs help with the noise..I feel useless for just saying that
I used to watch the Dont pay well take it away programmes..horrible to see how people are treated when circumstances change

Winning at life today, 2 year old has gone for a nap for the second day running so I'm out once again sunbathing. My "save the economy" parcels are due today so I'll have nice new gym clothes and a new handbag but nowhere to wear them.

Pondering over booking a weekend away next year for me and my friends but with everything so up in the air I can't do anything yet incase people need to save money.

Ibake · 25/06/2020 13:28

Hi all. Took some much needed MN time out yesterday and have been sunbathing!
I read posts like yours @cattermole and realise that I haven't got a bleedin' clue. How desperately sad is that? I've always valued MN for posts such as £50 to last until payday, help me mealplan. (There was a brilliant one not long ago where she remembered her kids had been given high st vouchers and she used them in Iceland). I loved the post for 2 reasons - the inventiveness, compassion and problem solving that the MN massif threw at her which was truly phenomenal but personally because it did me good to realise just how many people are so hand to mouth, every single month. I do know I'm very lucky but it's good to be reminded of that fact every now and again.

The blooming LEA were re-sharing this one and asking schools to!

No word on what's happened next door - but I've seen the dad and the son so I'm wondering if it's the elderly chap the other side that next door have been "looking out for" instead (by having him in their garden every night getting pissed). If it was something Covid related - it's the clique in the street who've ignored it all (apart from parping car horns like twits after the rest of the UK had quit it) so they're all potentially buggered and isolating - but I'm buggered if I'm doing another fortnight since I refuse to speak to the twit next door!

Absolutely scorching here. Had the GP surgery ring me and ask when they can call me to do an asthma review - I normally don't bother, but since it does function as a bit of a mask-get-out-clause, I'll make sure I stick like a good girl to it - receptionist's reply that I'm free apart from school run times as both of mine are back in school was "ooooh you're lucky - how did you manage that?"

The supreme horror of Zoom ballet tonight - DD2 can't focus on Zoom shit and her speech issues are a problem and DD1 just gets cross at DD2. I'd sack it off but I appreciate the lady's effort in doing it and it's all interaction for the kids I guess.

Had some dialogue with uni - it appears that it'll be bare minimum face-to-face work next year - I seem to have got the distance learning course I kind of wanted in the first place - but I suspect we'll get some ridiculous timetable in terms of when they DO want us there, and if they don't open the coffee shops and library/study spaces - I ain't going!
