Here's a new thread for discussing aircon, aubergines, and Goth music.

Just spoke to my boss. Our whole team is drowning. We need more people or less work. Neither is likely to happen. I said we need a bloody good drunken night out to bitch and moan and re establish the bonds that make us a shit hot team normally.

Definitely not just cos I want to go to the pub.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 25/06/2020 10:02

I was at uni with your Welsh health minister and he was a total dipshit back then and doesn’t seem to have improved any.

I’m a “tech bro” and not lovin’ it - I’ve fucked up hugely and haven’t been assigned a Compliant Wife 2.0 to take care of the kids and home whilst I sit in my office dropping crumbs on to my Kbd And snorting at BOFH (tech joke). But yeh, male tech bro friends seem to be living their best lives.

Great post nihil💪

The effect on theatres is just so sad. All that talent and creativity just tossed in the bin.

I can’t imagine hospitality/tourism/theatres will ever recover. Who wants to go into an industry that can be shut down by the government for months on end with no compensation?

And yet there are so many arseholes on Facebook proclaiming that they are loving lockdown. I just don’t get it. They can’t seem to see how this is destroying lives.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 25/06/2020 10:06

You don't get to disavow your responsibility just because of what some scientists said.

I agree and I've heard Marget Thachers being quoted "Advisers advise and mInisters decide" which I think sums it up.

Dowser DH thinks it's to get us to rethink about sending them in - I think once their there everything will be calm and fine.

If it's not they'll be hearing again from us but I think the actual teachers will be fine with them.

Spudlet · 25/06/2020 10:08

Dh works in an IT job and thinks this is shit too. Maybe not personally for him. But he is fully aware of how fortunate we are.

Just to say.

I think it will come back but it will take years and it will be slow.

I heard some apprenticeships people being interviewd and it was heart breaking - they were just stopped overnight and it's unlikely the business or even the sector will take them back on. So as bad as some schools and some univerities have been they haven't just disappeared overnight.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 25/06/2020 10:15

Spudlet - DH is similar - tech field- but he'd like to get back to his students and office he also wants to delete teams as soon as possible.

It's why we have laptops for all the kids in this house and good broadband - why we were already happily using many on-line teaching sites. Many of their friends are in much worse positions including some in Y10.

BarkandCheese · 25/06/2020 10:15

Theatres can only survive if the government agree to help. Any business which unable to reopen for its intended purpose needs the furloughed scheme extended for them for as long as it takes. They also need grants to cover the day to day expenses of keeping the buildings in working order.

NothingIsWrong · 25/06/2020 10:17

I have managed to find a holiday club - a forest school one - that is taking provisional bookings against possible opening, so I've booked some time over the holiday. At the moment, I'm more looking at social and active time for them, rather than childcare, although the childcare aspect will be very welcome! It's only money - I am lucky that I have a bit I can throw at this.

I am lucky. I really am. I am fully employed and likely to stay that way, my kids are healthy and generally coping OK, we have resources and friends and people around us. Count those blessings

MaudesMum · 25/06/2020 10:22

Exactly @BarkandCheese - at the moment the Government are copping out by saying theatres can open but not for live performance - so what's the point of that? And its not just theatres, but live music venues, often run on a shoe-string.

Bollss · 25/06/2020 10:23

I need to keep reminding myself, too.

I was nearly made redundant, found myself a new job, and now might not be being made redundant after all but I'm still leaving to go to my new job and I'm so excited. Dp has worked throughout and he's even had overtime which we didn't expect. Were all healthy and at no real risk. DS is loving life at nursery and can remain there until September when (hopefully!) He will go to school full time Smile

I'm hoping by this time next year this will all be over and we can have our July wedding and get on with our lives!

I totally agree.

I'm pretty shocked at the idea that a government can make such a major intervention in a market and not compensate businesses.

Not very conservative.

I agree with this.

It's not like a normal recession where the weakest flounder and reinforce the market of the others. It is just an arbitary shut down (economically). Sectors that can not function need to survive.

My city struggles with theatre. Hypothetically we have 3... one was pulled back from the brink probably about a decade ago and has survived since. The second is the large entertainment venue and had a fire in a plant room and remains shut 5 years on amid much political wrangling. The 3rd is a small one that largely supports amateur theatre and small groups and that's been shut 18m due to the ceiling structure failing. It's a listed building and costly and difficult to repair. Amateur groups have used places like schools since then but are struggling because it's now so fragmented.
The big panto and some other touring events are held in the sports centre which just isn't a specialist venue.

The city centre has suffered since the loss of the big venue in particular as there are fewer people having drinks and a meal around a night at the theatre.

Worldgonecrazy · 25/06/2020 10:33

Live music will also suffer. Many of the Bigger artists are okay, But it takes a myriad of people to put on a show. A lot of the crew are self employed and will have zero income this year.

BarkandCheese · 25/06/2020 10:41

Freelance crew are utterly screwed by this. I was always resident when I worked in theatre so earned less per hour but had job security. If I was still in that job I’d be on furlough but probably looking down the barrel of redundancy. Freelancers won’t even have furlough or redundancy cheques, just no work whatsoever.

NothingIsWrong · 25/06/2020 10:48

The Covid Zoe has updated. The figure last week was 3612 new infections per day. Looking at the website, this has updated to 2341 new infections per day.

I think this is weekly, so a 36% drop in a week...

Dowser · 25/06/2020 10:55

Insane membrane
So sorry to hear about the death of your mum in February. It’s a hard hit to take when there’s all this going on as well. No time to grieve properly when your mind and thoughts are on your worries for the future, especially when you also have a health concern.

I’m the worlds worst at making time for meditating, we are in gods waiting room ffs, we have loads of time, but just sitting, eyes closed for 5 minutes when the ankle biters are out of the way can really help to reset the batteries.

One of my lovely healing friends used to meditate all morning..his wife must’ve been a saint.😂

The lovely mr Dowser is just sat chomping on his muesli like a little hamster..he rarely gets ruffled. We need to go food shopping today and maybe have a run to the beach later

Like posters say, there’s a lot treating this like one big holiday..like we’ve been given the present ( gift) but then there’s the paying for it all to come..ouch!

When I joined this thread it was all about looking for ways we could legitimately get some fun into our lives, little sneaks we could do to get some treats, enjoyment etc but I notice how it’s now changed with a lot more concerns for the future.

I still love the support here.
Plus I’m in awe of some of the critical thinkers..Nihils posts are very informative , I do admire a good Brian.
As I said to my grandson the other day. Look after your brain, that’s what people want when they hire you..a good brain

Oh well, it’s 8 days since my tooth broke . I’ve been waiting for a phone call so I’ve just rang. I need to send a photo in.
Pity they didn’t tell me at the time.
So, Id better get on it.

MsIreneWinters · 25/06/2020 11:24

I had an interesting sight of D in the wild (supermarket) yesterday. Two full on mask wearers having a go at a woman with kids for not being 2m away.

So far so lockdown-y except the thing is, they were ones who looked out of place. Everyone else was maskless, it was all quite cheery(or as cheery as you ever get in Asda!). People were just normal (old normal, not stupid new normal). All those around just rolled their eyes and the Dementors just sort of scuttled off. I am taking that as a positive sign of things changing in rl!

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/06/2020 12:00

I just went shopping for the first time... nowhere exciting, just Homebase and Next Home. Won’t be bothering again.
Huge queue to get into Homebase, and a staff member came out every 5 mins to give us a talk on ‘how to shop safely’. Including ‘we will try and give help and advice as much as possible but our main role is ensuring 2m social distancing’. Tried to browse the paint but had someone tutting at me from the end of the aisle as they wanted to come down.
Then went to Next Home. Member or staff on the door in a visor, who watched me sanitise my hands. As I walked through the door he said ‘can you do your hands with our sanitiser please?’. So I did, and it was all rank and sticky (mine is lovely). Tried to go upstairs to the bedroom bit but the escalator was broken and there was a massive queue for the lift (no stairs), so I gave up and went home.
I know they’re just doing their job, I don’t blame them. It was just such a shit experience that I won’t be bothering again for the foreseeable.

TheGreatWave · 25/06/2020 12:03

Well the beach is... blustery. But it is great, busy but everyone spaced out. People in the sea, lifeguards out, and a moaning teenager.

As good as it gets. Star

BarkandCheese · 25/06/2020 12:08

The sanitiser in Bluewater was rank too, it smelled like vinegar. Fortunately I’ve got some stuff from the US which is cinnamon scented so I used that to get rid of the smell. It’s a small thing but horrible smelling or sticky texture sanitiser is going to put people off using it.
